Gretna police officer suggests U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 'needs a round'

He didn't directly threaten her, you know that right. He shared an opinion, not a threat. A stupid opinion, yes. But still not a threat.

If you think that just sharing an opinion is a punishable offence. Then it's just as easy for people like you to be caught up in that same net.

And yet when a hurr durr librual says the same thing about Trump, the right would have screamed for him to be arrested for making a threat. We've seen that already.

The opinion that he shared was to end her life because of opinions on a satirical news site that he mistook for a fact.

It was a threat to her life. He was dealt with in the proper way and hopefully, he will never have the chance to wear a badge again because he is both stupid and mentally unsuited for the job.

...so still going to push the lie that it was a threat.. good, I should've just gone and place a bit "not holding my breath" sticker on the last post.

It was not a direct threat, just an opinion. Threats, have a very specific legal corresponding action. Just like racist verbal attacks, or physical attacks.

You can't just claim that something is, what it isn't, and have it automatically become that thing. That's now how our reality works.

He said that she needs a bullet. That is a death threat to a member of Congress. You can try to spin it faster than KellyAnne Conjob but the facts remain. He was physically threatening the life of a member of Congress and he was rightfully terminated for it. He can disagree with her but when that disagreement takes the turn to be a physical threat to her life it becomes a crime, especially when the person making it is a police officer.

Our free speech rights have a hard limit and that limit is when that speech becomes a credible threat. His boss decided that his casual threat could not be tolerated and he was fired.

So yes, pushing a lie... good thing I didn't hold my breath this time around.

You can push that somewhere else for all I care. I'm not going to let "feelings" dictate something that the law deems.

Because just him thinking it, does not in fact make it a threat. Using such a wide margin for punishing someone, will only end up hurting yourself and those like you in the process.

I'd rather not live in an authoritarian society that criminalizes thought in general.

To be fair, if someone calls you and tells you that you need a bullet to your head, would you feel a bit threatened? After all it's just an opinion.

Please explain how his comment was a credible threat.

Saying someone deserves to die is not the same as threatening to kill someone. His comments were disgusting but were in no way a credible threat.

Not a valid comparison.

Would you feel threatened if some random person a 1,000 miles away tweeted to someone else that you deserved to die?

With the history of right-wing violence, I'd find it concerning.

If they said the think I need a bullet to the head, no. But calling me a directly telling something to me as such, maybe.
Then again, I'm a psychologist. I'm got more than a few patients who've done as such throughout the years, and I would most likely chalk it up to much of the same.

Well I don't know how you sleep at night then because there are likely millions of people around the world that likely believe you deserve to die whether it is because of your political views, nationality, race, or any number of reasons.

Even though the left has just as much a history of violence?

I'll admit readily that the right have been better at killing people, especially with the last century. But violence is still violence.

His thoughts were not criminalized because if they were only thoughts they would not be posted. He chose to post them> His boss determined that they were not defendable as a police officer.

We do not live in an authoritarian society. He was held accountable for his deeds by his boss. A job is not a constitutional a right because your actions reflect on your employer and as a police officer, he is held to a higher standard. Think before you act and if you have any questions about how it will be perceived by others then don't say it or do it. It would seem that you agree with his opinions of AOC and you don't like to see that he was punished for his vague threat.

You are assuming that I will act as you do but that is what makes us different. I think before I act. I also know what authoritarian societies are.

Reading comprehension much?

My statement about authoritarian societies was about the one who got fired, for simply liking the post. Not the primary officer.

Still, pushing the lie that it was a threat, is still not helping you any here.

Oh I know. The way things are going, especially with Trump's rhetoric, one has to be concerned.

I sleep just fine. We're talking about the history of right-wing terrorism and Trump's rhetoric.

His actions reflect on him. Read the employment contract. Cops are the public face of a government and they should be held to a higher standard. If you don't like it then don't be a cop.

Nope. I'm not as terrified as the right wing wackos.

Oh I know. The way things are going, especially with Trump's rhetoric, one has to be concerned.

If it's just his rhetoric then we're fine.
He's not telling his supporters to actively go out to assault, or harass opponents, or their supporters in turn. The last time I've seen him even supporting one of his own people in any kind of violent act, it was in self defense, and that was when a protestor had snuck into their rally and kept trying to start fights.

It's bad enough with democrats jumping on this "concentration camp" bandwagon and many more of them saying, never again. Like they're actually fighting against Nazis.

When the right goes bad, it's someone who's usually alone and certifiably insane. They kill who they can before they're taken down and that's it. But when the left commits their violence, they crowed into their little black block mobs and attack anyone indiscriminately.

So far, I've personally seen people, stabbed, beaten, and maced. Some of which were older women holding children, who were not even participating in any aspect of the event. They just happened to be nearby. At Charlottesville there was one trying to set people on fire.

How bad do you think this will be when over three hundred of them, like what happened at Berkley. Come out and begin to not only torch the city, but kill people without discretion?
All simply because they believe that they're the ones fighting some sort of oppressive, monster regime.

That's fine, let him be fired for that then.
That doesn't change the fact that what he said wasn't a threat.

I'm concerned about AOC.

Why? Do you think this guy is going to fly to DC and shoot her? He would likely be picked up at the airport and questioned before leaving the terminal should he attempt it.
