Report: North Korea will maintain nuclear arsenal for decades

Report: North Korea will maintain nuclear arsenal for decades

SEOUL, July 12 (UPI) -- North Korea will maintain its nuclear arsenal for the next two decades and the United States' insistence on its rapid disarmament is an "unrealistic goal," according to a report by the Federation of American Scientists presented in Seoul on Friday.

"There is no mix of economic, diplomatic or military pressure that can verifiably eliminate North Korea's arsenal on acceptable terms in the next few years," read the report, which was produced by a study group on North Korean policy at the Washington, D.C.-based think tank. "North Korea will in all likelihood remain nuclear-armed and under the control of the Kim family for the next two decades."

The report claims that a single-minded focus on disarmament has overlooked other threats from North Korea, including "the risk of conventional war, ballistic missile proliferation, contagion of infectious disease and the continued suffering and repression of the North Korean people."

The authors call for a new, long-term strategy in dealing with a nuclear-armed North Korea that looks to manage risks and maintain stability while working toward economic, humanitarian and diplomatic engagement.

COMMENT:-

This report could not possibly be correct since Mr. Trump has, in the greatest triumph for American diplomacy ever, already in his greatest success so far (and one that will never be equalled by any American President past or future) already negotiated the complete nuclear disarmament of the DPRK.

At least that's what the White House press releases said and you don't know how difficult it is going to be to convince me that Mr. Trump would ever be anything but 100% truthful.

Hey please remind us about all the successes other presidents have had? Maybe this?
President Trump did not give them 5 billion for nothing like Clinton/Carter did!

You can thank Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton for North Korea’s nukes

You can thank Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton for North Korea’s nukes

North Korea’s boast that it just detonated its first hydrogen bomb met instant doubts from the White House and arms experts. If they’re right, Pyongyang “only” has plain-old atomic bombs. What a . . . relief?

But, as one Chinese expert told The Wall Street Journal, the H-bomb claim still shows that tyrant Kim Jong-un is “marching in that direction.”

For all this, thank Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. North Korea couldn’t have done it without their gullibility.

Back in 1994, President Clinton prepared to confront North Korea over CIA reports it had built nuclear warheads and its subsequent threats to engulf Japan and South Korea in “a sea of fire.”

Enter self-appointed peacemaker Carter: The ex-prez scurried off to Pyongyang and negotiated a sellout deal that gave North Korea two new reactors and $5 billion in aid in return for a promise to quit seeking nukes.

Clinton embraced this appeasement as achieving “an end to the threat of nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula” — with compliance verified by international inspectors. Carter wound up winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his dubious efforts.

But in 2002, the North Koreans ’fessed up: They’d begun violating the accord on Day One. Four years later, Pyongyang detonated its first nuke.

North Korea knew from the day the Korean war began that they had to develop nuclear weapons.

This is a very concise article describing the Korean conflict. I recommend it to anyone who really wants to understand the complexity of this conflict. There's one line that sums it all up pretty well;

"The only way that you can make the atomic bomb credible is precisely by not using—by keeping it out there as a kind of mysterious, awesome force. That to use it would actually cheapen it somehow.”

I bet if N. Korea AND Iran become/remain nuclear armed powers, Trump will sell it as part of his masterplan to achieve a mutualities assured destruction of NK and Iran by having them nuking each other.

Wow! You sure are sure going out of your way to attempt to justify North Korea gaining nukes. How long did it take you to google that?

That's funny... you think humble can actually use Google.

It's more like Google uses him.

Was I 'jusitfying' North Korea obtaining nuclear weapons? I don't think so. I'm logical and a pragmatist, that's all.

Nah, Trump will just send him another love letter. He'll agree. They'll meet under a full moon. Etc.

Actually you were in your own deeply partisan way. If you were given a choice between North Korea possessing nukes and Trump having a foreign policy such success, you would clearly choose NK possessing nukes.

'Actually', no I was not. You should be careful telling me what I would or would not choose.

If Kim Jong Il does not relinquish his nukes, there will absolutely be a regime change and the US will not have to do anything more then keeping the sanctions going.

Kim will not relinquish his nukes. Ever. And for the US to pursue a policy with that as its goal strikes me as foolish.

You make it quite obvious. You want Trump to fail to solve the NK issue so badly that you can taste it.

I respectfully disagree. The NK nuke program has to go and ultimately it may not be up to Kim Jong Un.

I think Trump deserves the Nobel Prize for denuclearizing NK. Oh wait...

LMAO, what a ridiculous thing to say, honestly--- how old are you? I suspect you might be below the allowed age limit to buy a ticket to an 'R' rated movie.

It would be great for NK to denuke, but there is no way they will ever do it. What the US seems to expect is for NK to unilaterally disarm while we keep our nukes and tens of thousand of our troops on their border with our guns trained on them. Its not going to happen. We should accept that NK is a nuclear power and tie sanction relief to their human rights record IMHO

Ugh, this won't bode well for Trump's Nobel prize push.

As I began to read this obviously pro-Left, lily-livered liberal OP, I thought the report in question was going to be by the clearly discredited, deep-state US intelligence services amalgamated that Trump has previously proved the hoaxsters of Russian interference and spies against his righteous, historical and patriotic presidential campaign to lead the true Americans of the right-right-right wing out of the despotic grip of the foreigner Obama and his anti-American Democrats. Not so surprising, the report was actually by the conniving, fact-falsifying know-it-all, god-hating scientists that continue to perpetrate the great China hoax of global warming, extreme weather event scare to frighten Americans into over-regulating the great, patriotic industrialist job creating trickle-down corporations of America and take jobs away from and food out of the mouths of real, white Americans. As usual, our great president, the greatest president in the history of these United States, President Donald “Bone Spurs” Trump, is the target here, as always. Everybody’s after Him. And theses “scientists” are getting personal, trying to break up perhaps the greatest romance in the history of the world. One of open love and adoration. One that is keeping the peace. Now that’s the truth.

I am sure that Kim Jong Il is honored that so much of the left on US political forums supports him in his quest to develop and maintain nukes.

You do know that there is a difference between

"supports him in his quest to develop and maintain nukes"

and

"realizes that there is nothing (short of all out war and total devastation of the DPRK) that can be done to stop his quest to develop and maintain nukes UNLESS some concessions are made either prior to or during the denuclearization process"

don't you?

Actually its a whole lot more like acknowledging that, in a foot race between a quadriplegic and an average soldier in the US Army, the soldier is going to win every time.

Excellent response, but I have one really minor cavil. The term is NOT "scientists". The correct term is "so-called 'scientists'".

Thank you and remember, if you are south of the Mason-Dixon Line and looking towards the White House, the sun will always rise on the right.
