Report: North Korea will maintain nuclear arsenal for decades

SEOUL, July 12 (UPI) -- North Korea will maintain its nuclear arsenal for the next two decades and the United States' insistence on its rapid disarmament is an "unrealistic goal," according to a report by the Federation of American Scientists presented in Seoul on Friday.

"There is no mix of economic, diplomatic or military pressure that can verifiably eliminate North Korea's arsenal on acceptable terms in the next few years," read the report, which was produced by a study group on North Korean policy at the Washington, D.C.-based think tank. "North Korea will in all likelihood remain nuclear-armed and under the control of the Kim family for the next two decades."

The report claims that a single-minded focus on disarmament has overlooked other threats from North Korea, including "the risk of conventional war, ballistic missile proliferation, contagion of infectious disease and the continued suffering and repression of the North Korean people."

The authors call for a new, long-term strategy in dealing with a nuclear-armed North Korea that looks to manage risks and maintain stability while working toward economic, humanitarian and diplomatic engagement.

COMMENT:-

This report could not possibly be correct since Mr. Trump has, in the greatest triumph for American diplomacy ever, already in his greatest success so far (and one that will never be equalled by any American President past or future) already negotiated the complete nuclear disarmament of the DPRK.

At least that's what the White House press releases said and you don't know how difficult it is going to be to convince me that Mr. Trump would ever be anything but 100% truthful.

Sounds to me like those "scientists" aren't very smart, since they think Trump has a "single-minded focus on disarmament". He doesn't. He has a number of issues, with respect to NK, that he is focused on.

So a nuclear NK is now acceptable with you, got it. You guys were screaming up the hill about NK having Nukes but since your master Trump is pondering that is acceptable for NK have nukes, now you follow like a good little Trump soldier. Trump supporters have a hive mind when it comes to Trump. Trump can do no wrong, Trump always tells the truth and the media is the enemy, so sayeth the Trump supporter.

Please don't put words in my mouth. Address exactly what I said or don't address me at all. You are wasting my time.

You are dismissed.

I will address the truth despite your garbage faux outrage. Trump supporters have a hive mind when it comes to Trump. This is the TRUTH. Sorry you don't like it.

Yes, he has been equally ineffective in many areas. Where he shines is from Kim's perspective. Never has a Nork dictator been so adored by a western leader. You would think Trump was brought up in NK.

Over the past two years despite all the propaganda pushed out by the White House of multiple so-called 'negotiation meetings' with Kim Jong-un, the US isn't any closer to getting N. Korea to give up nuclear weapons as it was 10 years ago. All those meetings, and the one at the DMZ was nothing other than great propaganda for Kim Jong-un's population. N. Korea is on the same path as they have always been and that's to develop the ability to deploy a missile equipped with a nuclear weapon capable of striking the mainland US.

In the meantime, Iran has been watching very closely. They understand that in order to get any concessions from Trump, they will first have to posses a nuclear arsenal. So why would anyone be surprised when Iran announced they're moving forward with their nuclear program and enriching more uranium that had previously been limited by the Iran nuclear deal?

We can all sleep well. We have the word of none other than the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump; ""Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat [sic] from North Korea."

ROFL. A politicized group of American scientists said it, so it must be true, huh?

No way could Kim afford to give up his nukes.

Even if he was stupid enough to think he could have survived giving up his nukes, Pence put him straight on that matter with the timely reminder of what happened to Muammar Gaddafi.

Trump is a sick, dictator-loving joke.

But his supporters will keep singing his praises as he actually does things they had fits over when they imagined that Obama might possibly do them.

word.

North Korea was merely Trumps hobby photo-op to add to his autographed memorabilia collection.

Sounds like a bad case of TDS. The comparisons to Muammar Gaddafi are ludicrous. First he did not yet have nukes. He only had a program seeking to develop them. He gave up that program and all wmds in his possession after US troops in Iraq pulled Saddam Hussein out of that spidey hole. And it was fellow islamic extremists that took him out. And like it or not, the insane fat boy in North Korea is alot more likely to survive if he gives up nukes then if he holds onto them.

NK acquiring...and keeping...nuclear weapons was a near-inevitability. Trump embarrassed himself and our country for no reason whatsoever.

I won't dispute your conclusion that the Iranians have concluded that the only way to get any progress is to (to at least appear to have the capacity to) have nuclear weapons.

However, if you actually look at what the Iranians are actually doing, you will see that they aren't doing anything that can't be bundled up on semi-trailers and sent out of the country the same way that the "surplus" of "nuclear materials" was sent out of the country under the JCPOA.

You might also want to take a look at the "previously limited by the Iran nuclear deal" in light of the fact that the essential component of that deal can be stated as

If you will do "X" then I will do "Y", but if you do not do "X" then I don't have to do "Y" - and I will not do "Y".

Mr. Trump is trying as hard as he can to ensure that NO ONE does "X" at the same time as he is complaining that the Iranians are not doing "Y" (and justifying that complaint on the basis of "The Iranians agreed not to do 'Y' and they are doing 'Y' so the Iranians are in breach of the deal [which was an incredibly bad deal and should never have been agreed to, but since it was agreed to the Iranians have to do 'Y' regardless of the fact that the US agreed to do 'X' and is not doing 'X' and is, in fact, doing everything in its power to ensure that no one else does 'X' either]).

I am sure that Kim Jong Il is honored that so much of the left on US political forums supports him in his quest to develop and maintain nukes.

But, but ..... Trump told us Kim promised to denuclearize. He even showed us the document!

Surely Trump wasn't being played by Kim. Nobody can put anything over on the Stable Genius.

Yes.

Well, not "no reason". It got Trump a lot of attention. That's what matters.

Fixed it for you.

But for weeks before the meeting, which started as a Twitter offer by the president for Mr. Kim to drop by at the Demilitarized Zone and “say hello,” a real idea has been taking shape inside the Trump administration that officials hope might create a foundation for a new round of negotiations.

The concept would amount to a nuclear freeze, one that essentially enshrines the status quo, and tacitly accepts the North as a nuclear power, something administration officials have often said they would never stand for.

It falls far short of Mr. Trump’s initial vow 30 months ago to solve the North Korea nuclear problem, but it might provide him with a retort to campaign-season critics who say the North Korean dictator has been playing the American president brilliantly by giving him the visuals he craves while holding back on real concessions.

While the approach could stop that arsenal from growing, it would not, at least in the near future, dismantle any existing weapons, variously estimated at 20 to 60. Nor would it limit the North’s missile capability.

Kim Jong-un is advised by generals who advised his father before him. They're not about to relinquish any nuclear weapons because they know the US will immediately move for a regime change. That's what John Bolton wants in Iran and it's the first thing John Bolton will advise regarding N. Korea too. Kim Jong-un proudly defends his regime because it was his legacy left to him by his grandfather.

North Korea would never strike anyone first because, very simply, Kim doesn’t want to die. That’s because Kim has certainly applied to the situation what the mainstream narrative would like you to discard — common sense. With just a dash of it, any logical being can look at the events unfolding and see that North Korea poses no threat, to any surrounding nation, period. Trump and Kim Jong-un are reckless and impetuous. They're both unchecked and impulsive and need to be restrained diplomatically by the grown-ups in the room.

If Kim Jong Il does not relinquish his nukes, there will absolutely be a regime change and the US will not have to do anything more then keeping the sanctions going.

Who's going to make him?

You will have to do better then the New York Times.

Why? What was the last story the New York Times posted that was objectively false in its central claim?
