Yeah I've heard that before, and it's reasonable up to a point - but if we're not providing enough processing to allow entry by the legal port at a reasonable speed, it's going to result in some people seeking other options, legal or not.

I frankly don't give a **** about the flag part, it's not an inherent part of our national identity or whatever.

Just a symbol, and those can change over time.

But I'd agree that we definitely do not have an obligation to let the whole world in.

We weren't talking about doing that though.

Personally, I'm not that attached to it.

It's a symbol that has changed in the past and is subject to change if the number of member states changes.
Or if we just decide to change it.

What's more important are the ideals and principles that we can agree on as a guide to future actions.

Principles like those the 1st amendment outlines:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It should be noted that it's the protesters, not the detainees that did this. In many cases it would work out better for us if we kept the detainees and deported the protesters. At any rate, doing things that way would likely allow us to keep the people that most appreciate the principles on which America was founded.

The people that most appreciate being here are the law abiding people who have been waiting patiently for decades from all around the world to come to our country. They are the people that will make this country great. Not all these lying lawless ingrates trying to jump to the front of the line and circumvent our immigration system by claiming asylum.

Complete and utter BS. You know what it cost to legally immigrate here? It cost a lot in lawyer fees. so as usual, only rich immigrants who have means can come here. THe poor, the under educated, they can't afford the legal means. THey are also desperate. Oh, just wait 5 years with violence, no way to feed your family, and costs 1000s of dollars you don't have 3to come here legally. Sorry, the "just come here legally" is not an option for most people

ANd the immigrants that risk their lives to provide for their families, in a foreign land, most times having to leave their families behind and risk death, and who work their asses off are far more appreciative than people lucky to be born in this country and think that somehow makes them special.

I know what it takes. I have immediate family members who immigrated from Mexico. You are right legally is extremely hard because of all the lawless losers jumping into the front of the line. It is sad we have so many sick people in this country who support criminals over law abiding people.
