TN Governor declares day honoring Confederate general & early KKK leader

Bernie is old. And even if he weren't that would make me wrong not contradictory. Learn what words mean.

Old people are irrelevant, but you're a fan of Bernie Sanders, who is old.
Contradiction...defined.
Irony noted.

Maybe when liberals are still clutching flags and statues from a war we lost a 150 years ago you'd have us beat. Conservatives turned the entire south into a safe space. :lamo

LOL.

That didn't even measure up as a poor effort.

:screwy

I know, the dog whistle was blown, and the pack has to bark, regardless how little they know about it.

Dog whistles are subtle, publicly honoring a white supremacist terrorist is about as un-subtle as it gets.

Gov. Lee signs proclamation for 'Nathan Bedford Forrest Day' to be observed in Tennessee | WZTV

Just following orders. But why not change the law? There is a lot of history to commemorate, like the liberation of slaves in TN. Why do Republicans honor those who sold them and terrorized freedmen?

This shouldn't be at thing that happens still. We should not be honoring a KKK dude, at all, as a governmental function, full stop. I would also like any people or private organizations to not be honoring such a person as well, because that's disgusting, but I do support that as their right.

Personally, I don't understand the declaration. However, the reports are this has been going on for years and years.

Where was the outrage 5 years ago? 10 years ago?

Perhaps the point is nobody knows about it, and nobody cares.

Oh, and dog whistles aren't subtle. At least not anymore. Without the blatant use of them just about hourly, the liberal MSM would be struggling more than they are to keep the doors open.

Click bait and dog whistle, the same thing in today's fake news liberal media environment.

If no one cares stop doing it. How about a little common sense in government

Tennesseans are different. I can’t find a link, but not that long ago there was a robbery at a service station/convenience store in the Knoxville area. The perps were apprehended and the owner was asked to press charges. He declined and was asked for his reasoning. He stated that the young men were UT starting football players. Go, Vols!

Because he's a traditional Southern conservative.

No he is a traditional Democrat, a big time racist. The only thing that changed is blacks used to be Democrat slaves, now they are Democrat pets.

It's all about modern conservatives honoring historical conservatives regardless of party. That his all.

*edit... that's sig worthy.

One thing I did not know about Forrest and learned it today (from Ted Cruz of all people) is that this "noble" southern general slaughtered black troops and their white officers when they tried to surrender in the Fort Pillow massacre (Fort Pillow Massacre: Facts, Deaths & Significance - HISTORY)

What do you know about it? Have you checked into why they do it, or are you just reacting?

What do you know about it? What possible purpose can this serve?

End the practice. Common sense

I think another poster has already stated that if Ted Cruz is dogging you........well you know!

Of course, the crucial word here is the "IF."
On the other hand IF Ted Cruz is stating the truth, that is easy for any educated person who is interested in real history and not on the mythology of the "Lost Cause" to verify it.

It did not take me long to find that the Confederates established a policy of not treating black soldiers and their white officers as prisoners of wars. Such "illegal combatants" were to be executed after capture

Here is one historical document describing the policy:

Public Laws of the Confederate States of America: Passed at the First-fourth ... - Google Books

From

PUBLIC LAWS
OF THE
CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA,
PASSED AT THE FIRST SESSION
OF THE
FIRST CONGRESS;
1862.

Page 168. Section 4

FIRST CONGRESS. Sess. III. Res. 6. 1863.

...

Sec. 4. That every white person, being a commissioned officer, or
acting as such, who, during the present war, shall command negroes or arms against C. S. mulattoes in arms against the Confederate States, or who shall arm, train, declared to be in- organize or prepare negroes or mulattoes for military service against the Confederate States, or who shall voluntarily aid negroes or mulattoes in
any military enterprize, attack, or conflict in such service, shall be deemed How punished as inciting servile insurrection, and shall, if captured, be put to death, or be otherwise punished at the discretion of the court.

Now, I have a feeling that Tennesssee schools do not teach such historical facts.

Why do they make this proclamation, year after year? Come on, you can do it. You can take some responsibility and learn for yourself. I have faith in you!

Clearly out of racism

Why the hell is a Democrat being honored?

Because he was a racist. Like Trump. Lots of Dems moved over to support Trump, because of, you know, his Democratic party values.

Lot's of those Democrats actually became Republicans. This is why today the Confederate flags are honored by Southern Republicans and not by the modern Democrats.
