[h=1]ICE Used Facial Recognition to Mine State Driver’s License Databases[/h]
WASHINGTON — Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have mined state driver’s license databases using facial recognition technology, analyzing millions of motorists’ photos without their knowledge.
...
Privacy experts like Harrison Rudolph, an associate at the center, which released the documents to The New York Times, said the records painted a new picture of a practice that should be shut down.

“This is a scandal,” Mr. Rudolph said. “States have never passed laws authorizing ICE to dive into driver’s license databases using facial recognition to look for folks.”

I think it is inappropriate for ICE to uses this technology without the permission of the state they are getting the data.

The reaction will be that states will deny the federal government the data, which will make it more difficult to track real criminals and terrorists.

Great idea! ICE needs to go get those in the country illegally.

So you are okay with the invasion of privacy rights and the furthering of a police state?

I'm ok with using facial recognition to find criminals and fugitives.

What is the problem?

Facial recognition technology just automates what any half witted human has the ability to do by a few months of age...

Only for other peeople, and definitely for brown people. That's the right wing way, they only want rights for themselves, and if it doesn't affect them the hell with it

Illegal aliens are criminals.

The problem is that facial recognition technology is actually pretty ****ing bad at it, and that these matches are being presented in courtrooms as rock solid forensic evidence on par with fictional episodes of CSI. The false positive rates are unacceptably high.

How comfortable are you with video surveillance of a burglary being run against a database with your face in it, when the false positive rate is higher than 50%?

To top off the **** cherry on the **** cake, the accuracy goes down when your skin is darker. I'm sure that will never be abused!

In another thread he'll shriek about people being innocent until proven guilty.

In another thread you'll shriek about "collusion".

That only applies if the accused is rich, powerful and Republican.

So, are illegal aliens criminals? What about bank robbers? Are bank robbers criminals?

Bank robbers are criminals.

The people who are accused of bank robbery are not criminals until it's proven they actually committed a crime.

Scenario: footage of a burglary has a face on it. Given the extreme rate of false positives with facial recognition software, how comfortable are you with that footage being checked against a database with your face in it?

But, somebody is robbed a bank is a criminal, just like simeone who entered The United States illegally is an illegal alien and therefore, a criminal. Thanks for clearing that up. :lamo

There are circumstances when facial recognition technology should be used, but I don’t think this is one of them, especially without the state’s knowledge or consent. To protect themselves, states should pass laws prohibiting the use of this technology except under specific circumstances.

So much concern about seeking state permission in order to use these databases. How about worrying about the citizen's permission first?

"People who commit crimes are criminals."

Thanks, apdst. A wonderfun and useful contribution, as usual. Any comment whatsoever about the actual topic?

To open your iphone, maybe. It's not even accurate enough for me to trust it with my phone. Too much sensitive stuff in my email boxes.

For any kind of law enforcement or justice system related application? Absolutely not.

Facial recognition software is really bad at correctly identifying people.

And it's quite a bit worse at it if you're of a darker complexion, which will surely not get abused horribly!

Well, people could always show up for their deportation proceedings so ICE doesn’t have to sift through 300 million people looking for fugitives.

Also, what is ICE doing looking at driver's licenses?
