House passes border aid bill despite White House veto threat - CNNPolitics

Washington (CNN)The House of Representatives voted by 230-195 on Tuesday to approve $4.5 billion in aid for the growing crisis at the US southern border -- a vote that followed Democratic infighting over the package and a White House veto threat.

House Democratic leaders had worked to quell a progressive rebellion and secured passage after making several updates to the measure in response to concerns within the caucus, but the White House has already said it "strongly opposes" the legislation and it is not clear whether the House and Senate will be able to reach an agreement the President will sign off on.

The ball is in Rebublicans corner now.

Why does the White House oppose it?

Some of the poison pills:

- no overtime for ICE agents
- no DOD personnel at the border
- no transferring of any DHS personnel to help with administrative duties
etc.

- 2 year pilot program to allow the UN to take over our CBP processing centers

Democrats are nuts! ...(to put it mildly)

Actually the ball is in the joint conference committee that will have to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate Version, and depending on the results Trump will likely sign it (he's often more bluster than bite).

Why does the White House oppose it?

The White House threatened late Monday to veto a $4.5 billion House bill that would provide emergency funding at the border over concerns that legislation in its current form lacks certain funding and includes provisions thrown in by Democratic lawmakers “that would make our country less safe.”

In a statement issued by the White House Monday night, the administration warned that the bill would be vetoed this week if passed.

“After ignoring the Administration’s request for desperately needed funding to address the humanitarian crisis at the border for over a month, and despite the efforts of the House minority, the House majority has put forward a partisan bill that underfunds necessary accounts and seeks to take advantage of the current crisis by inserting policy provisions that would make our country less safe,” the statement reads.

Basically they want to withhold funding for "concentration camps"...er, I mean detention centers even after they were informed that "Border Patrol stations are holding 15,000 people — more than triple their maximum capacity of 4,000."

ETA: I don't think there is anything in the Dem's bill that addresses asylum loophole reforms, so I doubt this will go over with the WH.

So this is the "nothing" that the GOP keeps hollering about?

Does anyone think this will get past McConnell?

This is voting for something worse because it looks good for the next campaign. It reminds me of the Republicans voting against ACA.

Zero chance in the Senate.

This is making it worse on purpose because it looks good for the next campaign.

Making it worse on purpose? In no less than 4 threads, the right was asking why congress doesn't supply funding to improve conditions.

Now they have, and the response from the right is that making things better makes things worse.

I rephrased, because it will not pass the Senate. However, the Democrats would never try to pass this all the way through. It's a horrible idea.

If he doesn't get it to Trump's desk, it will cost him his own re-election in 2020, and if it does get to Trump's desk and he vetoes it, he's going to catch hell not only from democrats but from his base as well

Right. Keep telling yourself that.

Right. Keep telling yourself that.

We'll see soon enough, won't we? This bill cannot be held up for any extended period of time.

There are quotes from Republicans in the story that answer your question.

Why do you think only three gop House members voted to leave no child behind?

Why do you say that? McConnell can hold it indefinitely. It is not like there is a public outcry for it.

Still, it would be a nice break from the all anti-Trump, all the time we have had for three years.

There will be a public outcry unlike anything we've seen, there already is and the bill hasn't been vetoed yet anyway.

There's crickets chirping. That must be the outcry.

Patience grasshopper - patience. the bill hasn't reached Trump yet.

Despite the politics and poison pills, I'm so against this! I earlier today found-out the detention center in question:

1] Is owned & run by a private for-profit corporation

2] Gets $750.00 per day, per detainee

3] John Kelly is on the Board

It's a scam, fleecing the taxpayers for Trump's billionaire sycophants. A private corp with Kelly onboard, and ties to Trump. Yet treated like a top-secret government facility, where not just the press but even Congress cannot go! I wouldn't put a penny of the taxpayer's money in their pockets, and I think Pelosi is wrong for doing it.

In fact I would not give Trump or his administration a thin dime, as he cannot be trusted to lawfully disburse the funds. I see no choice but to take the hits, and then let the whole sordid mess blow-up in Trump's face as it is doing now, as much as I hate to see the kids suffer any more. Working with Trump won't work. We've got to get him out, so let the damn thing blow-up and wish him good riddance next November. I wouldn't help him a bit. Not, at all!

There will be no outcry from Trump's cadre, they'll cheer it all on. And that's all that matters to the GOP leadership. McConnell will sit on the legislation, and take the hit for Trump to protect him. What would make you or I believe this instance will be different? They know no bounds, to their greed and depravity.

The Democratic Party want migrants to die - lots and lots of them - while hoping to blame it on the president.

NO PRESIDENT would sign the bill. It conditions the money on the President surrendering all presidential authority over immigration policies to the Democrats in the House of Representatives.

The Democrats in Congress are totally amoral - murderously amoral - pathological liars. They propose a bill that spits on the US Constitution, calculating they'll claim Trump refused money to help the poor illegal migrants and refugees - knowing it would never clear either the Senate or the White House.

If the Democratic Party could find guns that had even been in Trump's name, they would murder as many immigrants as they could so they could blame it on Trump. The level of sadistic sociopathy of the Democratic Party is why I again claim the Democratic Party should be declared a terrorist organization and outlawed.

The Democrats in the House of Representatives are hellbent on killing as many migrants as they possibly can anyway they can get away with it.

Lol, Literally the previous post you were saying you were against the legislation.

So if the legislation were to pass, it is a tax scam meant to fleece taxpayers for Trump's cronies.

If McConnell kills the bill in the Senate, then he is taking the hit for Trump and his greed and depravity knows no bounds.

If a bill passes that helps improve the less than ideal conditions at some migrant detention centers, then the President (as another poster pointed out) WILL sign it despite his usual bluster.

He is under tremendous pressure to improve the accommodations at those centers, so he will sign the bill after putting his own spin on the matter. Bless his little heart!
