[W:286] Are US child migrant detainees entitled to soap and beds?

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

We don't have to "take care of them". it is a policy decision to keep them locked up. We could hire more judges and lawyers to speed their cases through, but your president doesn't have much regard for such things. The cruelty is the point. And while the cruelty isn't proving to be very effective, certain Americans seem to find it gratifying.

That our government can't figure out that soap and toothbrushes are basic necessities in their concentration camps, it really needs to go. It is dehumanizing our population. The evidence is in posts we see here.

Cool. So maybe you should send a message to Pelosi and demand she start cooperating with the president?
You know...representing the people of the nation, instead of watching on day after day, and doing absolutely nothing?

But hey...who am I fooling here? It obvious that all the Democrats want to do is investigate Trump and whine.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

She's arguing that we should be giving innocent children clean clothes, showers, warm meals, and a place to sleep that isn't a cold concrete floor. You think she's a monster because of that? That speaks volumes about you if thats the case.

No...I'm arguing that her "concentration camp" comment was way over the top...and of course that she's a blithering idiot.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

How much funding has Congress approved for this noble pursuit?

First of all, it's not a "noble pursuit" to treat kids humanely. It's common decency, and what the U.S. prided itself on doing until Trump. Now some people cheer on behavior we'd condemn if done by other countries pre-Trump because they are assholes.

As to the amount, I don't know. You could do the research, or just ask someone else to do that work for you. If they can't afford blankets and soap and tootbrushes, then not enough, obviously. I have a feeling it's plenty and the reason are either, 1) some private contractor or prison company is deciding profits matter more than supplying the basics, or 2) the cruelty/hardship is the point, deliberate, and has nothing to do with money.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

So they enter the country illegally, with ample warning that they have to follow the process like other people do. And they come in anyway. So, what, exactly are they "entitled" to, out of my pocket? What do I owe them, exactly?

I know there won't be any coherent answer to this question.
Massively stupid post

Still speaking volumes about yourself. How dare she use loaded language to try to defend kids that aren't provided warm meals, clean clothes and a bath.

Bingo!

$800 Million in Taxpayer Money Went to Private Prisons Where Migrants Work for Pennies

A Daily Beast investigation found that in 2018 alone, for-profit immigration detention was a nearly $1 billion industry underwritten by taxpayers and beset by problems that include suicide, minimal oversight, and what immigration advocates say uncomfortably resembles slave labor.

Expanding the number of immigrants rounded up into jails isn’t just policy; it’s big business. Yesica’s employer and jailer, the private prisons giant GEO Group, expects its earnings to grow to $2.3 billion this year. Like other private prison companies, it made large donations to President Trump’s campaign and inaugural.

Detention center contractors will keep reaping profit even after DHS upheaval

GEO Group and CoreCivic receive multi-million dollar contracts from DHS to run detention facilities. Since 2017, ICE has signed over $450 million worth of contracts to GEO Group, and $280 million to CoreCivic, according to USAspending.gov. The more people locked up in detention facilities, the more money private contractors receive. In a 2019 budget proposal, ICE estimated a bed in a privately contracted detention facility to cost $148.43 per day.

Putting migrant children in tent cities costs $775 per person per night: Report

The cost of holding one migrant child for one night in such conditions is $775, an official at the Department of Health and Human Services told NBC News, while holding a child in a more permanent HHS building or detention center with their parents is between $250-$300 per person per night.

For $775 per night per child it should be a five star luxury hotel! Not a ****hole without even basic amenities.

Indeed. How dare she deflect from the fact that there is no Congressional appropriation for warm meals, clean clothes, and baths for the 11,000+ unaccompanied children who flow into this country every month.

Last time when Democrats and Republicans found some common ground but Trump did not get exactly what he wanted, he decided to declare a national emergency. Are we now entering a new phase of moral degeneration where Trump will use the conditions inside the detention centers as bargaining chip?

Congress doesn't have to appropriate money for every single meal and item needed by an agency. They appropriate a big wad of cash based on what's requested and it's the white house's job to use that money appropriately. You're spouting nonsense and trying to twist this around. Poorly might I add.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

WRONG!!!
EVERYONE should be upset about the lipstick queen's comments.

I know right, imagine criticizing the persecution of brown skinned people in Concentration Camps. I'll bet these Trump supporters, these "very fine people" as Trump likes to call them, are pissed right off!

You’re out of your mind if you think this is appropriately funded by Congress. It isn’t. Not even close. Even to support the current state DHS had to scavenge money from FEMA, the Coast Guard, and various counterterrorism offices. Congress has done nothing to provide appropriate levels of funding for the massive influx of unaccompanied minors every month. So AOC and others can put a sock in it unless and until their screeching translates into legislation to pay for the conditions they want to see.

Human dignity, the thing the right severely lacks.

How much did the white house request and how much was given?

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

To be treated humanely. To be treated the way you would want your children treated if they were every in that situation.

It's not that hard Anthony. It's called empathy. Human beings are born with it.

Question: Are you a Fundamental or Evangelical Christian?

Adore your response to the heartless prick. I'm sure he's another good christian.

I'm sure you have evidence to back that up. Let's see it. Or you could look up one post from yours. Do you think $775 a night is enough to afford soap, hot water and blankets. Last trip we took we got pretty luxury accommodations in the heart of London's West End for far less than half that. The rain shower and complementary toiletries were pretty awesome.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

How much did the white house request and how much was given?

Trump can only find billions for his wall, even when the Congress does not appropriate any such funds. If it is about spending a few thousands for soap, then "it is tough" according to his supporters.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

The latest illiberal outrage porn has arrived, and in the usual plain brown wrapper it would seem.

I can certainly see where this is vastly worse than Obama's murder of hundreds of civilians - including numerous children - and his terror attacks on Libya and Syria, and unspeakably more horrendous than the genuinely Hitlerian terrorist war crimes visited upon Afghanistan and Iraq by Bush II which destroyed millions of lives.

And of course, these holding facilities are comparable to concentration camps as well...

...said no sane or rational person ever.

:donkeyfla

If your son or daughter was torn away from you, how would you feel? It's what nazi germany did to many families and now the trump administration is doing it and those on the right are applauding. What you are applauding is trump driving the GOP into the ground like he does with his businesses.

Yep. Such bull**** excuses.

"The government is spending money like drunken sailors! We are spending way too much! But we can't give innocent children clean clothes or soap because congress is just too stingy with that money."

We usually stay at the Best Western Premier Ducs de Bourgogne in downtown Paris, a five minute walk from the Louvre and Notre Dame, and it's less 1/3 the cost. And they have toilets that automatically clean your butt!

But proper food for children is out of the question on $775?

Sounds like Trump University is back in business.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

How much did the white house request and how much was given?

The White House requested an additional $3.3 billion for humanitarian assistance (which is what this is). To date Congress has appropriated an additional $0.

Wow. Another tu quoque fallacy from 3leftsdoo. I never would have guessed.

If we are unable to afford taking responsibility for them then we are ethically unable to take responsibility for them.
[ Though, I strongly suspect that the US fed govt has the wherewithal to come up with some blankets, Crest and Ivory. ]

Pretty sure that if allowed, there're citizens and citizen organizations who'd donate toothbrushes, blankets, and soap to these children.

I heard that these children used to be released after 20 days to private orgs etc. who'd house them.
Maybe we could let that start happening again.

After I almost killed them by dragging them through the desert, endangering their lives?

Relieved that someone more responsible was taking over their care?

Nazi Germany!!

New Zombie Hitler!!!!

Who on the right is applauding this?

Did you condemn it when Obama did it?

What I am applauding?

You have me confused with someone else, or you're attacking a straw man.

Either way, you're 100% wrong.

:)

You never would have guessed because you clearly don't understand what the fallacy in question pertains to.

Who would have guessed?

They requested extra money for this and other things because they will run out of money in the future. They currently have funding and aren't spending it appropriately. Like I said, that's not congress's fault.
