[W:286] Are US child migrant detainees entitled to soap and beds?

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses ...” and we'll keep them that way

The treatment is so bad, you'd almost think they stop dropping in.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

Here’s the coherent answer: you treat them as you would wish US citizens who overstayed visas or in other ways were undocumented in another country. These are people claiming to be fleeing drug gangs and other oppression. I know what might reach you. You are billed as conservative. Just think of them as Cubans.

How many of these folks are in your living room right now?

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

Imagine being such a prick that you can't spare the thought of tax dollars going to basic hygiene for an immigrant child.

How many of these kids are showering in your bathroom right now?

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

no soap for you....:2wave:

Has Congress approved the funding for the extra soap?

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

I'd think beds/cots, blankets, soap, a toothbrush, wouldn't be too f'ing much to ask. It's not even one bomb for goodness sake. These are children, not murderers or rapists.

You can't even debate that kind of attitude. It's disgusting. I'd say more but you're not worth the mods imposing points or a ban with that bull****.

How much funding has Congress approved for this noble pursuit?

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

Nonsense comment since the argument by the government is not that the Congress does not approve funds.
And for the other nonsense comments above, the point of having a government is so that it will do things that we do not have to do, like detaining people.
If you think that you can justify the lack of beds and toothbrushes by arguing that it saves a couple of thousand dollars, you need to give us first the price you put on common decency. If you think it worths less than a toothbrush and a bed, you obviously do not value it much.

Appropriate care and conditions while the government is responsible for them. The government chooses to take them into custody, they government takes a duty of care, especially to children. You pay for that because the government represents you. How is that hard to understand?

Are you arguing for closing the borders?

I was glad to hear the other day that Democrats, and Republican's came together to pass humanitarian aid for the border crisis, maybe that will help in this regard..However, that aid was passed by being a stand alone vote. Democrats have proven that they will block things like this in larger bills, then blame it on Republican's in the most dishonest of ways...So, forgive me if I think there is more to this story than mean ol Republican's want to deprive children of toothbrushes...

It's like asking pro-life people how many babies they've adopted.

How we treat people in our custody is a reflection of our country. Many people tell me they want this to be a Christian country, yet they will turn around and excuse this kind of treatment of children? What kind of Christian church are they attending??

These companies and agencies are getting paid hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars to run those centers, even up to $775 per child per day and yet they are trying to withhold the most basic supplies. There should be outrage over where that money is going and us providing basic necessities.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

This is going to be remembered as the most disgusting thing America did in the 21st century and it's only been 19 years.

While I would certainly agree that soap and blankets and perhaps even toothbrushes should be provided to those who do not have them, "the most disgusting thing America did in the 21st century??? Huh...you're quite a little out of touch, aren't you.

I don't think they were withholding anything. I think more they just didn't think of doing anything more than what that Flores act specifies...which was very little.

By providing the bare minimum yet getting paid hundreds of millions it's easy to see what the scam is here. If they are getting paid, they need to be using the money towards the centers not their personal lifestyles.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

The article is complete bunk. There is no evidence that they have no been giving these things.
if people would have read the article itself it simply wasn't listed on a piece of paper that doesn't mean
they are not getting showers food water and clothing.

if anything it is a clerical oversite.
i will wait for actual evidence of abuse vs stupidity like this.

I would agree with you. But we do have to understand that we are talking about humans on a government contract here.

I think one thing we can do to combat that is stop the 'for-profit' detention centers. That provides incentives for those companies to lobby our representatives to make the stays at those centers longer which it's been shown that children are being held for longer periods of time.

Yep, and its really just lawyers being lawyers on both sides. The agreement doesnt specify anything other than food, water, shelter and emergency medical. It leaves it up to the govt to elaborate. This is just one more example of congresses failure to deal with this problem. If they want different treatment, order it. Or better yet, stop letting people in that we have to take care of.

Government contracts of any kind are bloated pigs. But private detention and prisons are a bad idea.

We don't have to "take care of them". it is a policy decision to keep them locked up. We could hire more judges and lawyers to speed their cases through, but your president doesn't have much regard for such things. The cruelty is the point. And while the cruelty isn't proving to be very effective, certain Americans seem to find it gratifying.

That our government can't figure out that soap and toothbrushes are basic necessities in their concentration camps, it really needs to go. It is dehumanizing our population. The evidence is in posts we see here.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

Lawyers: 250 children held in bad conditions at Texas border

The attorneys who recently visited the facility near El Paso told The Associated Press that three girls, ages 10 to 15, said they had been taking turns watching over a sick 2-year-old boy because there was no one else to look after him.

When the lawyers saw the boy, he wasn’t wearing a diaper and had wet his pants, and his shirt was smeared in mucus. They said at least 15 children at the facility had the flu, and some were kept in medical quarantine.

The children told lawyers that they were fed uncooked frozen food or rice and had gone weeks without bathing or a clean change of clothes at the facility in Clint, in the desert scrubland some 25 miles southeast of El Paso.

Wow. People are defending this. I can't even imagine. I'm not for open borders, but this **** is unacceptable by any standard. The only reason the right wingers are attacking "concentration camps" is because they don't want to look in the mirror and see what they have become to defend such terrible things.

EVERYONE should be upset about the lipstick queen's comments.

Bingo! Their complaints are virtually never in regards the persecution of brown skinned people in Concentration Camps, they mostly defend it.

Their complaints are centered around them being called "Concentration Camps". And that AOC used "Never Again," when apparently that only applies to Jews.

Seems they think persecuting brown skinned people in Concentration Camps is fine and dandy, and that AOC is ruining their fun.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

So they enter the country illegally, with ample warning that they have to follow the process like other people do. And they come in anyway. So, what, exactly are they "entitled" to, out of my pocket? What do I owe them, exactly?
If you are an American Christian then nothing.

She's arguing that we should be giving innocent children clean clothes, showers, warm meals, and a place to sleep that isn't a cold concrete floor. You think she's a monster because of that? That speaks volumes about you if thats the case.

Re: Government argues that child migrant detainees are not entitled to soap and beds

My question to those who question the necessity of a soap is the following:

How often do you bathe?
