He called for them to get the death penalty after they were arrested and their criminal convictions were later vacated, but President Donald Trump on Tuesday wasn't offering any apologies to the so-called "Central Park Five." "Why do you bring that question up now? It's an interesting time to bring it up," Trump told a reporter who asked if he would apologize to the five who were wrongly convicted of beating and raping a jogger in New York's Central Park in 1989.

Their convictions, based on confessions they said were coerced, were vacated in 2002, after DNA evidence linked a serial rapist to the brutal crime. The city later agreed to a $41 million settlement with the four black men and one Latino man, all of whom who were 16 or younger at the time of their arrest.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For anyone that was too young to remember or were in a coma in 1989, The Central Park Jogger case was a criminal case based on the assault and rape of Trisha Meili, a 28-year-old, white woman who was jogging in the park, and attacks on eight other persons in the North Woods of Manhattan's Central Park on the night of April 19, 1989. Meili, an investment banker, was so injured that she was in a coma for 12 days. At the time of the trial of the first defendants in June 1990, The New York Times described the attack on her as "one of the most widely publicized crimes of the 1980s".

Ken Burns has produced a film shown on Netflix about this case, this is why the question regarding the Central Park Five was asked of him today. There were four young men arrested, 4 blacks and 1 Hispanic. They spent years in prison then the real rapist confessed to the crime and DNA analysis proved they were all innocent. Trump was so outraged, mainly because the woman was white, that he took out full page ads in the newspapers demanding that these four innocent men to be put to death, murdered, for a crime that ultimately it was proven they did not commit.

Trump was wrong, he spent a lot of money trying to bring back the death penalty just to kill these four men. He never apologized and never will.

Donald Trump can't really be in favor of unleashing the death penalty on the nation because if they did, he most likely would be getting the death penalty for egging on those Nazis in Charlottesville, who murdered a woman.

What a deplorable man he is. NEVER admitting when he is wrong, even when it would cost other people their lives.

Lots of Americans supported the death penalty in 1989. So what? Al Sharpton never apologized to Tawana Brawley's victims either. Sometimes you just have to accept that people don't apologize and move on.

More than 50 years ago the FBI's Boston office framed 4 men for a murder the FBI knew they did not commit. Three were sentenced to death. J. Edgar Hoover knew all about it. The FBI hid the crime for more than 30 years, involving Justice Department officials including Robert Mueller in keeping the men locked up and hiding the facts from the public and Congress. Shameful. The U.S. government paid out more than $100 million in damages in that scandal.

There is nothing wrong with being agreeable when you easily can without sacrificing principles, so Don "the Mensa" tRump should have a trial in a jurisdiction that has the death penalty. I haven't seen evidence he deserves it yet, but who knows? I guess he was never told to watch out what he wishes for by his mom.

Bring back our Mueller.

It was very unfair of the police to coerce them into knowing things only the perpetrators would know.

And as we all know, beating someone into a coma, raping them, and leaving them for dead, is all perfectly okay as long as someone else rapes them later.

Or, as long as the raped and beaten woman happens to be Black.

Very racist of Trump to support punishment for rapists of a white woman. A good antiracist liberal would be just fine with a white woman getting raped.

The police intimidated these teenagers into what to say and DNA has proven their innocence.

That's not the case at all. So how do you explain the role of the person who actually confessed to the crime? His DNA and story matched. I may have to get out my heavy duty thin foil hat for this one.

A good anti-racist conservative would be just fine with forcing the pregnant white woman to carry to term, and then give the rapist parental rights.

After the Central Park Five left her for dead, another criminal raped her again. That’s what the prosecution originally asserted (it was already known at the trial that the DNA didn’t match). The only new information we have is:

1. The identity of the subsequent attacker, and
2. An uncorroberated claim, by a habitual violent criminal, that he was the sole perpetrator.

This thread is about Trump wanting rapists put to death.

There’s another forum for discussion of the left’s desire to have babies put to death.

At the time of the trial the prosecution asserted there was a 6th juvenile attacker they weren't able to pick up in their original sweep. The police and prosecutor needed to seal up a very polarizing case, and the kids went down for that need for closure. To ignore the pressure on police to solve the case is to ignore a critical component of the events. So your position is that this habitual violent criminal just happened to run into the jogger's body that was hidden in the woods?

Why does tertiary trump want innocent Black and Brown people put to death ?

Reyes provided officials with a detailed account of the attack, details of which were corroborated by other evidence which the police held. In addition, his DNA matched the DNA evidence at the scene, confirming that he was the SOLE source of the semen found in and on the victim "to a factor of one in 6,000,000,000 people". In announcing these facts, the DA also said that the perpetrator had tied up Meili with her T-shirt in a distinctive fashion that Reyes used again on later victims in crimes for which he was convicted.

Women are raped every day in NYC. Nobody has ever campaigned for the death of any rapists in the way Trump campaigned vigorously for the executions of those 7th and 8th grade boys.

Yep. Let's ignore the fact he committed other rapes in the area, and stick to the one where it HAD to be the Central Park 5 despite Reyes' confession and DNA evidence.

A bit of context: NYC was crime ridden in the late 80s, and it had been at the breaking point in terms of people's tolerance of theft and assaults. The high profile aspect of that case just reinforced the tensions which existed due to the racial component of the victims and perpetrators. Trump just threw gasoline into what was already smoldering.

White rapists are celebrated in certain states as future fathers of white nationalist america.

The issue is not support or withholding support for the death penalty. The issue is that Trump, still thinks these boys should have been put to death, even after the evidence against them proved false and they were proven innocent. You see, Trump believes in administering justice differently to people who look like him compared to those who look different and have less money. Case in point: When Michael Cohen's home was raided, with a duly executed warrant, Trump had this to say: "An Attack On Our Country In A True Sense, It's An Attack On What We All Stand For." But when we're talking about street criminals, as opposed to those that steal millions, Trump told law enforcement officers not to be “too nice” and suggested they hit suspects’ heads on police cars.

At least Trump is in great company when it comes to people who don't apologize, yeah?

Al Sharpton and Donald Trump, two of a kind.
