Trump says Shanahan out as Defense secretary nominee | TheHill

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has withdrawn from consideration to lead the Pentagon on a permanent basis, President Trump announced Tuesday.

The announcement came after USA Today published the details of a 2010 violent domestic dispute with his then-wife that was investigated by the FBI for his background check.

This is why Pompeo has been out in front of the cameras regarding the Iran situation.
Does the acting clock restart or does the next acting SecDef have the same time limit before confirmation?

"The best people."

Wow. No secretary of defense, no secretary of homeland security. Absolutely amazing.

I'm kind of okay with no DHS chief. We lived without a DHS for two centuries, we can do it again.

Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan, who has done a wonderful job, has decided not to go forward with his confirmation process so that he can devote more time to his family....

Donald J. Trump@realDonaldTrump

....I thank Pat for his outstanding service and will be naming Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, to be the new Acting Secretary of Defense. I know Mark, and have no doubt he will do a fantastic job!

Donald J. Trump on Twitter: "....I thank Pat for his outstanding service and will be naming Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, to be the new Acting Secretary of Defense. I know Mark, and have no doubt he will do a fantastic job!"

He also said the above. (bolded), but I'll let you keep spinning...

22 existing agencies which were overseen by other various government agencies are now overseen by DHS, such as ICE and FEMA. For a president to not even pretend to care about nominating a leader to these roles is a dereliction of duty.

Implies that the current president even understands what duty IS.

What are you on about? What spin? I provided a quote from the link. If you had looked at the link you would have seen that Esper was to take the post.

Feel free to actually argue the point. The president's job is to run the government and to put competent leadership in place. Trump not only hasn't done this, he's not even pretending to be interested in doing this.

Just out of curiousity...

Are you saying that you genuinely believe that the man accepted the position of secretary of defense and then just changed his mind while going through the process because he wanted to spend more time with his family and this had nothing to do with recent reports about domestic violence?

This is why you do background checks.

If only more of this corrupt administration had theirs done...

On the other hand maybe folding them into the DHS might not have been the best move to begin with.
Yes of course we SHOULD have actual confirmed heads of these agencies but Mr. Trump has decided that he is not required to submit agency heads to Congress for confirmation at all, so he apparently intends to use "acting" heads for the duration of his term.
And that is unacceptable.

That's a completely separate debate. Wherever you place them, they should have competent leadership that has been confirmed by Congress. Under any other administration there would be dozens of officials tossing their hats in the rings for these jobs. I think we have a mix of a lazy president who simply doesn't care and not very many people who want to work for a president who is lazy and doesn't care.

Since the only requirement to work for Trump is to agree with him, it becomes apparent, then, that there is really no need for anyone to work for him at all. While the cheerleading is aporeciated, they tend to just get in the way.

Mark Esper is a grad of USMA and streaked up the ranks to LTC before he decided to retire. He became a MIC guy. As secretary of Army he's focused on big ticket weapons such as longer range heavy artillery. Esper and Army Chief of Staff Mark Milley are tight -- Milley is incoming chairman of JCS who spits flames at Russia.

Pompeo is also a grad of USMA who carries a hammer at all times because he sees nails everywhere he goes. Pompeo, Bolton and Sen. Tom Cotton are the three musketeers of war. There's some serious overlap here given every generation of generals and admirals since the Shah of Iran want Iran back and they want it back so badly they can taste it. Even Mattis is on board to get Iran back although Mattis isn't quite purple passionate about it.

Trump keeps saying he isn't looking for any war but everyone he appoints to Pentagon carries a six shooter -- in his hand. Nobody at Pentagon believes Trump is on the level about Kim Jong Un, Vladimir Putin, Iran. Crosscurrents here are getting pretty strong and may end up carrying Trump out to sea and over the horizon with the Navy. And Air Force.

So early to see a thread this derailed.

The issue at hand is Shanahan out, and seemingly Mark Esper thrown into the mix for acting Secretary of Defense with questions on who is really being placed into the conformation process.

We can debate all day long about usefulness and intentions for either the Secretary of Defense or the Secretary of Homeland Security, but until something changes these positions need to be filled and what we are watching is a decreasing pool of candidates for Trump to run with. Between Congressional dysfunction, issues throughout Trump's administration, and Trump's love affair with Twitter to bastardizing... well... everything it is no shock that people are eventually out of consideration.

But given Trump's attitude about staff blindly remaining loyal to him over responsibility of the position it stands to reason that Trump will finish his first term with a handful of "acting" <insert Administration position here.>

With the resist movement in Congress, Trump still hasn't gotten existing nominees confirmed in the Senate. As of the first of this year there were hundreds STILL being held in limbo If you want to be enraged over something that would be a good place to start because what the Democrats have done is outrageous. Key positions at the State Department to ambassadors
after 2 years have not been confirmed. And now he is having to re-submit their names because of the delay.

Now Trump can appoint an acting director and not have to go through the games Democrats in the Senate are playing. When it comes to any position involving immigration whether at DHS or the State Department, highly qualified nominees and yet the Democrats have refused to do their job in a timely manner. It is also not fair to the nominees as it puts their lives in limbo. One of the games the Democrats are playing is forcing nominees to constantly answer hundreds of pages of questions over and over again which keeps them in limbo. And the reason they are doing it is because lobby groups for open borders and far left activists have been pouring a lot of money into their campaign coffers to keep these nominees from getting confirmed.

Two words: Merrick Garland.

Trump should spend less time tweeting and calling into Fox and Friends and fill these positions with qualified individual's.

This is all bull****. It took Trump 2 years to nominate an ambassador to Saudi Arabia for example. But regardless, Republicans run the senate. They have 50+ votes. Only republicans can stop nominations. Democrats can't stop them. If they could then Trump wouldn't have gotten 2 SCOTUS nominees through.

You are also pivoting from cabinet members to ambassadors. These are 2 completely different things, and also completely ignores the fact that the senate couldn't have possible stopped him from having a confirmed DHS head or SOD, because they haven't been presented a nominee. You are arguing that the democrats, who don't even run the senate, nor even have a filibuster type procedure that they could use, are somehow preventing a nomination, which they have nothing to do with. You're not only wrong, you're wrong in more than 1 way.

I think you're probably right, especially about the pickings turning slim for Donnie.
I doubt many want to work for him anymore.
