Tennessee preacher-cop calls for execution of LGBTQ people

Tennessee preacher-cop calls for execution of LGBTQ people - CNN

Authorities in Tennessee are reviewing all pending cases involving a Knox County Sheriff's Office detective after he gave a sermon at his church that called for the government to execute members of the LGBTQ community.

"They are worthy of death," Grayson Fritts said in a June 2 sermon at All Scripture Baptist Church, a small church in Knoxville that he leads.
The church posted the sermon online and then removed it, according to The Washington Post. The video was picked up by the Tennessee Holler, an independent liberal news outlet, and edited into a six-minute clip.

I do not now if such words with such passion in this setting (church) seems to be within the protection of the first amendment free speech. I know that there is no free speech protection for inciting violence but I guess there is the issue of if in this case such words are perceived to lead people to imminent violence or not. On the other hand, I did a quick google search and found that in 1951 the Court concluded in Dennis v. United States that a danger need not be so "clear and present" if the ultimate harm was very grave (Dennis v. United States | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute)

One thing is sure... Fundamentalist Christians with his beliefs are closer to the fundamentalists Muslims in Brunei in how they want to treat people of different sexualities than close to modern westerners. Heck, even Brunei was forced to back down from the gay sex death sentence after the international criticism they received (Brunei Won't Enforce Death-By-Stoning Law For Gay Sex, Sultan Says : NPR)

The police force has the right, and frankly the duty, to suspend/fire him. Just think of the lawsuit they'd be in for, if they let him on active duty after this and he bashed in the face of a gay dude, or shot a lesbian outside a gay bar or something? They'd be toast, and the taxpayers would be forking over millions to pay for the damages.

The same goes for any preacher/imam/rabbi/or any other religious leader who also serves on a police force.

"Pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon!"

You did not answer his question:
Are not you (angry) ?

Or were not you angry when anarchists or black activists or whatever were chanting "pigs in a blanket, fr'e, like bacon"?

And those who said such things were not even close to any form of governmental power which could give them the opportunity to "fry" cops...

And all this hate just because a guy wants to have sex with another guy or wear women's clothes.

It is not like men with high heel pumps and skirts are beating him in demonstrations or harassing him as was often the case in the South in the 1960's when such anti-cop chants were common...

Based on the "Pigs in a blanket, ..." chant, a long line of police officers were killed execution style, with the largest group in Dallas.

No form of governmental power was used and is still being used ...

What this is I have a hard time believing this is actually a religion. It reminds me a lot of Fred Phelps Church there are a few of them like this I know there's a guy named pastor Boyle, then there's a guy named pastor McMurtry and then there's pastor Anderson it all seemed to be pulling the same rhetoric.

And if we look at Fred Phelps his church which is the westboro Baptist Church and we look at Fred Phelps himself he was a disbarred lawyer. And what they would do would be to go to the funerals people who died either in service in the military or and some sort of accident and they would as ridiculous as it sounds protest these funerals. Telling these people God wants them dead. They do this because they're trying to provoke an emotional response from people who just buried a loved one who died suddenly and tragically. Basically put they want you to hit them so they can sue you.

And I think this group is similar. They might not be out to sue but they're out to leverage people in some way or another.

I see no reason to doubt that this is a form of a Christianity. His beliefs is the logical consequence of someone who believes in the original script of the Bible. When one uses Biblical words to form a belief about earth's age or the evolution of our species and refuse to accept the scientific consensus, why should he choose to ignore the Leviticus 20:13 as he mentions it his sermon?

I went over to see what this passage says, and as I was suspecting, it commands the following:

Leviticus 20:13 ESV - If a man lies with a… | Biblia

13 f If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

As is the case with all religions, believers make a wide range of choices regarding which passages accept to the letter and which ones choose to modify by using the rationale that they were written to address only the needs of people in the past and do not apply in modern times.

The fundamentalists who stick to the "fundamentals" and refuse to change their interpretation over time to embrace modern ethical norms are those people who "cling to their religion" (as Obama put it) and become resentful about a world that deviates from their "fundamental" ethics. Such type of resentment does not need a lot to become hate and even actionable hate. Imagine for example this person getting some unfair indeed treatment from say a gay supervisor. I would not be surprised to see such person snap...

True!

But make no mistake that the cops are actually much safer as an occupation than roofers, construction workers or drivers, and about a dozen other occupations and this is because the people who usually hate cops and chant such things about them are incapable of inflicting much damage. On the other hand, powerful cops are much more dangerous, especially in the US where their rules of engagement are very aggressive compared to other western countries and often lead to judgment calls regarding the potential threat that a certain suspect exerts.

Oh don't get me wrong I don't doubt they believe their nonsense I just think there's an ulterior motive

"Pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon!"

What does this have to do with the topic?

Are you guys really this insane? This is such a trash comparison. None of those blacks were cops. This guy is a cop in a position of power and a preacher advocating the murder of civilians.

You make me sick with your apologism.

Typical Conservatice tactic. Look! Squirrel! It's always about deflecting into bull**** and not addressing the topic. The topic now is this **** clown calling for the murder of civilians from an official position, and the conservatives defending him for saying **** like this.

You guys are sick.

Not mad, just think he is a bigot and not very Christian... well not a what would Jesus do kinda Christian anyways... :peace

Hes very neochristian that's for sure.

I think that the singer Taylor Swift has a new song about people who are so agitated by gay love.

I think her message to such people is "Calm down."

There you go, calm down and love one another. I see the makings of a great country song. Do you write music?

I don't think you need worry about those Christian's yet that are on the fringe...I don't see them assaulting the world with hatred yet...And as vile as it is for you to make that moral equivalency, simply because you don't like what THIS pastor has to say is really nothing more than an attack on Christianity as a whole...

What percentage of evangelical Christians would be in favor of treating gays and lesbians like second class citizens without the ability to legally adopt children or have legal marriage recognition under the law?

We're not talking about that though are we? The premise is that Christian's believe that LGBTQ people should be put to death....That's the premise set out there because of one over zealous preacher....So, what percentage do you believe think that?

Firing the guy is the right thing to do. Firing the host of the daily shoah was the right thing to do. You dont get to serve the public and advocate for the deaths of mass swaths of the public. The freeze peach warriors in here dont like responsibility so they lash out at people who are trying to protect more vulnerable people.

Hi j-mac, I'm not reading his post the same way you are. It doesn't come across as an attack on Christianity as a whole. I would be all over him if it did. That person being discussed in the OP does not represent all Christians. Can you point out where it does please?

He did specifically say

The beliefs he was referring to;

Is apdst still arguing white Christians should have a right to talk about killing gays and nobody has a right to infringe on their thoughts? I hope he tests that theory out on this forum.

Hey Serenity...While I can agree that he throws in a hollow caviat to misdirect, in context when he adds in the stuff about:

Fundamentalist Christians with his beliefs are closer to the fundamentalists Muslims in Brunei in how they want to treat people of different sexualities than close to modern westerners.

I read that as Christians = Muslim extremist....Clearly over the top because he is using one example and equating it to an unspecified number of other Christians...Now, he is free to have his opinions about it, as I am...Unfortunately for his argument, and the article's writers, we in this country don't prosecute, or jail people for their thoughts...not yet anyway...

A small percentage, but a high percentage wanted them treated like second class citizens at best.
