Mr. Ford pardoned Mr. Nixon as part of a deal whereby the Republican party wasn't forced into destroying itself by either voting to impeach Mr. Nixon (and tossing him out of office) or voting NOT to impeach Mr. Nixon (and keeping a clearly guilty person in the office of the President of the United States of America).

IOW, it was a matter of "Yeah, I know that I'm going to stop being the President under SOME conditions - like if the Republicans in the Senate vote in accordance with the actual evidence and that I'm not going to stop being the President under SOME OTHER conditions - like if the Republicans in the Senate vote contrary to the actual evidence and show the American people that they really don't give a s**t about what the laws of the US are. The choice for you to make Gerry, is how destructive you want those conditions to be to you and the rest of the Republican party.".

I believe that there was some talk about painting the top of the cockpit orange, but when the flight tested the paint sample it had a tendency to peel back from the front of the aircraft and flap in the breeze.
