Oberlin College to pay bakery the now-massive sum of $44M over racism dispute

I have just read a headline that says that the college claims to be too poor to pay the fine.

Shall we take up a collection?

A cap that may or may not apply. Could be on the hook for as much as $57.2 with attorney fees. And hope they see even more than that in loss of donations and declining enrollments.

The cap applies. It is Ohio law. The maximum for punitive damages is 22 million. The 33 million I quoted earlier includes the bakery's attorney fees that Oberlin is responsible.

Le*gal In*sur*rec*tion

Whales are not citizens with rights, were not enslaved, did not suffer segregation and Jim Crow. Whales were not completely defamed and disenfranchised.

No justice for black people.

But whitey gets $44,000,000.

Institutional racism.
Of course they don't have rights. It's all part and parcel of our institutional so-called "justice" system. Whales have been hunted down and viciously slaughtered and consumed for 1000's of years. When will it end???!

Comparing black people to animals is racist. It's dehumanizing.

I bet you can't admit it. It's plain as day. But you will not manage to muster an admission of wrongdoing.

We're all animals, are we not? The fact that you naturally assume I'm only "comparing black people to animals" tells me all I need to know about you and the reason for your "white guilt" posts. Thanks.

Comparing black people to animals is racist. Period.

That's your wishful thinking. The fact is that in the founders time slavery was legal and despite what their constitution said they would of believed the idea of a black man or a woman even of being equal to them to be ridiculous..

It made the free blacks in America equal when it was enacted and wrote in the coming end of the importation of slaves 20 years later.

The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight,.....

Your source doesnt support your assertions.

No it did not make them equal. Free blacks could own property and enjoy some protection under law but they could not vote or run for office. The first black person to vote didn't do so until 80 years after the ratification of the constitution. Also if you're going to be intellectually honest why not mention the thriving domestic slave trade that wasn't abolished?

Explain your position. How did the founders doom slavery? By doom you mean they allowed it to continue for another hundred years. Allowed millions to be bought, sold, worked, raped, murdered and split up from their families. Allowed men to become some of the wealthiest businessmen the world had seen on the back of that slave labor? Man that was some bad juju.

Not true, Northern and British industralists were the richest in the world, not plantation owners in the south.

Segregation and Jim Crow did not cause massive social and economic harm, those were wrong and they were done away with generations ago, as was slavery. The balance sheet is now zero. In fact I would argue the welfare state which is disproportionately used by blacks is the main driver of economic and social harm to the black population. Economists like Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell agree with me.

institutional racism does not exist in contemporary America. The harm to the black community is self inflicted. No whites are forcing black mothers to have kids out of wedlock, or black fathers to be absent from the home, no white authorities tell black children to disrespect the police and commit crime, these are self inflicted harm.

Williams and Sowell are two of my must read folks, have some of Sowell's books too.

Bakeries just can't catch a break from a$$hole Leftists, can they? First it was a dispute about not wanting to bake cakes for homosexual (don't say gay because it's an improper term) wedding because of faith beliefs, and now they're going after them over race (at least this particular bakery), even though it's actually about a guy (who happened to be black)was shoplifting and two of his friends (who were also black) assaulted a worker (who happened to be white). These people on the Left are relentless. They REALLY don't like private business because they succeed without the help of the government. My dad has had his privately owned business here for over 30 years (while being in his practice for almost 40 years) and he's had his share of jerks coming in. The number one thing, though, is when it comes time for his customers to pay. Thank God he hasn't had issues with homosexuals (because his business is based on Christian values, but has never turned them down if they came in) nor had problems with being accused of being a racist. He'll be retiring in less than 10 years, so again, Thank God because I don't think he could afford any of that. Anyway, I'm glad this case didn't have to go to the SCOTUS like the homosexual wedding cake business (which was ruled correctly).

First, I said slavery allowed them to become SOME of the wealthiest businessmen in the world so even if those guys in Britian were wealthier my point still stands. But I'm going to need a little proof of your claim because slavery made millionaires out of a lot of southern plantation owners.

Slavery Made America - The Atlantic

...by 1860, there were more millionaires (slaveholders all) living in the lower Mississippi Valley than anywhere else in the United States. In the same year, the nearly 4 million American slaves were worth some $3.5 billion, making them the largest single financial asset in the entire U.S. economy, worth more than all manufacturing and railroads combined.*

The facts are very clear. The students did in fact attempt to steal.
The college did spread lies about the bakery.

Gibson's sues Oberlin College - Chronicle-Telegram

So, this article quotes rather liberally from briefs submitted by the plaintiff; not so much from the defendant. In the fact of me providing reasons for why things might not be as they seem, you've basically just said the same thing over again. That's not how discussion works.

Yes, I know they did. As I mentioned in my first appearance in this thread, I'd expect this outcome to be appealed. The President of Oberlin has all but said as much. Of course, appeals fail to be perfected on numerous occasions, or otherwise sometimes fail to manifest. We shall see.

It's a good bet that when a jury examines all the evidence, they'll reach the right decision. But that's all it is--a good bet. We know that in fact juries sometimes reach an incorrect conclusion (looks like it may be somewhere between 10% and 25% of the time). In this case, there are reasons to think it's more likely than it might normally be that the jury did reach the incorrect conclusion. That doesn't mean they got it wrong--only that strident rushing forward toward a conclusion is not warranted, or not yet warranted, in this case.

I reiterate what I wrote in my first post in this thread: while I'm generally happy to be considered politically pretty far left, I do find some of what my fellow lefties do wrongheaded and even disturbing. Rioting before an Ann Coulter visit, rather than listening to what she says and having a spirited but civil discussion, for example. Proclaiming that since 9 out of 10 accusations of sexual harassment or assault are probably factual, it's OK to ruin the lives of innocent men by just automatically believing any and all such accusations, for another. And if this case turns out to be what Gibson's bakery alleges, this would be another. My point, however, is that such is not yet clear. It is better to withhold judgment for a while yet.

Withhold for what? The facts are very clear, and very out there, what facts are you waiting on judgement for?

Justice for white people is swift and merciless.

Justice for black people is still waiting, 200 years and counting.

They were shoplifting. Get a grip on yourself.

I see you approve of reducing 13% of the population to 0% of power and keeping them there.

I see you approve of letting POCs shoplift with impunity.
Good for you!

You cheer a gross lawsuit because it will dissuade black people from complaining and others from taking up their complaints.

No...its cheered because it will dissuade all people from theft, and dissuade all people from making false accusations.

Capitalizing white is racist. It's not an ethnic group, despite what white supremacists say.

Ahhh there it is. The great Libbie fig leaf. Racist.
The Libbie skirt they hide behind.

Allow me to introduce you to the idea that your own posts here, are the ONLY racist posts in this thread.
Have a warm and fuzzy day.

Actually, 44 million bucks is "don't tell lies in an attempt to destroy someone". I'm proud to be one of the biggest Trump bashers in this forum, but I won't stoop so low as to make false accusations. The college made false accusations. Let them pay for it.

It's lonely dishing out to the goose as to the gander, but on occasion, it is satisfying.
