The "deal" with Mexico over tariffs in order to stem asylum seekers was just part one of a two part lie. This is part two.

The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations.

Friday’s joint declaration says Mexico agreed to the “deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.” But the Mexican government had already pledged to do that in March during secret talks in Miami between Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, and Olga Sanchez, the Mexican secretary of the interior, the officials said.

The centerpiece of Mr. Trump’s deal was an expansion of a program to allow asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their legal cases proceed. But that arrangement was reached in December in a pair of painstakingly negotiated diplomatic notes that the two countries exchanged. Ms. Nielsen announced the Migrant Protection Protocols during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee five days before Christmas.

It's a shame, then, that Trump had to slap AMLO around now to get him to do what he had agreed to do months ago.

I'm sure AMLO got the message this time, but if he tries to slack of in the next 90 days Trump will hit him with HIGHER tariffs.

The moral of the story...don't mess around with Trump. He'll rip you a new one...as the Chinese have already found out.

NYT and Bloomberg are working overtime with their Hate Trump Dog Whistles based on ghosts making claims.

So, Mexico had already agreed to take action regarding the border months ago.

Interesting.

According to CBP data, 357,481 people were apprehended on the Southwest Border over the last 3 months. That's a 133% increase over same time last year.

Dang, what would the numbers be if they hadn't done something about the invasion they have been facilitating?

And that's certainly refreshing, given all the apology tours, and limp-wristed diplomacy of the previous administrations.

From the article:

And over the past week, negotiators failed to persuade Mexico to accept a “safe third country” treaty that would have given the United States the legal ability to reject asylum seekers if they had not sought refuge in Mexico first.

Mr. Trump hailed the agreement anyway on Saturday, writing on Twitter: “Everyone very excited about the new deal with Mexico!” He thanked the president of Mexico for “working so long and hard” on a plan to reduce the surge of migration into the United States.

It was unclear whether Mr. Trump believed that the agreement truly represented new and broader concessions, or whether the president understood the limits of the deal but accepted it as a face-saving way to escape from the political and economic consequences of imposing tariffs on Mexico, which he began threatening less than two weeks ago.

Having threatened Mexico with an escalating series of tariffs — starting at 5 percent and growing to 25 percent — the president faced enormous criticism from global leaders, business executives, Republican and Democratic lawmakers, and members of his own staff that he risked disrupting a critical marketplace.

After nine days of uncertainty, Mr. Trump backed down and accepted Mexico’s promises.

Sure. "Don't mess with Trump."

You were lied to, per usual.

Everyone but the Red Hat Brigade understands this. The only new 'development' is the GOP made him drop the tariffs because they would have been unsustainable.

Since Mexico has now agreed to house asylum seekers in their country while they await the US decision, it looks more to me like the tariff threat tipped the negotiations to the US's favor.

Seriously, this is a work in progress, but it is progressing. And anyone who spins this as Trump backing down is being dishonest.

Tariffs tipped the negotiations months after Mexico had already agreed to deal with asylum seekers? You have a strange understanding of the time continuum.

ThenPelosi was lying through hercud chewing teeth when she chastised Trump? She acted as if it happened yesterday instead of months ago? Why didn’t the cud chewer tell us it was already a done deal?

Why did Trump lie that tariffs caused the deal, and why did he lie about a make-believe agriculture deal?

"months after Mexico had already agreed to deal with asylum seekers"

However, months after they agreed to deal with asylum seekers they've been making absolutely NO attempt to live up to their agreement. So yeah...it was time for Trump to put the fear into them to get Mexico to do what they'd already agreed to do.

As I said...AMLO has now learned not to mess with Trump.

Do you really care about the truth? If so, do you care that Trump lied twice on this issue alone?

I am not so sure for I am certain if the cud chewer had caught him lying she would have told us.

The whole thing is BS, trump got a good talking to by the Repubs and advisors, count in it. He is now claiming some big deal was made when the reality is nothing of the sort occurred. Notice no mention of illegal Mexicans. Good Grief, anyone that believes this to be some sort of major deal is an idiot. Speaking of Idiots, donald just had to add more bull fertilizer by talking about imaginary farm deals, something is really wrong there.
Make sure you count on no one else, vote the Idiot out of office.

I would like to see all the news stories associated to this deal when it was supposedly reached months ago and all the subsequent articles reporting how mexico had begun to enforce these measures. There should should be a chronological archive of stories reinforcing their claim, no?

Trump isn't going to hit Mexico with any tariffs, especially one that escalates to 25%. That would destroy the US economy and his Republicans that still have a brain will never allow it, that's why he backslide off this threat.

And that's exactly what Mexico did. A good friend of mine lives in Mexico and he told me this months ago.
So exactly why isn't there Mexican troops on their border and why did we catch 140,000 illegals crossing our border and only god knows how many that got through without getting caught.

And you "know" this how?

Almost 150,000 allowed to move through Mexico and cross the US border...in one month.

I'd say THAT number is what prompted Trump to finally say "Mexico...get with the program. Or else."
