It's a sad day for humanity when one man has the power to curtail fetal tissue medical research. I'm in the medical field, having been a registered nurse since I was a very young woman. In my studies, I learned many things, one being the importance of fetal tissue research. It's not a new thing, fetal tissue has been used for research dating back to the 1930's.
If people would only realize that human postmortem tissue has helped develop numerous vaccines that have saved millions of lives. The development of vaccines against polio, rubella, measles, chickenpox, adenovirus, and rabies all involved fetal tissue, as did the discovery of treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, and hemophilia.
The Trump administration said it would continue to fund research into alternatives to fetal tissue from elective abortions. There cannot be any alternative to actual human tissue and the $20 million that will be given to the NIH of health to try and find an alternative is money that would be better spent repairing a few roads or bridges. Whether scientists are funded $20 million or $20 billion, they will never find an alternative to what they've been using for the past 80 years. The Trump administration also announced it was canceling a contract with a University of California, San Francisco lab that was testing new HIV therapies with fetal tissue. I have vivid memories of the 1980's when scores of men were dying of HIV and thanks to new treatments developed from human tissue research, HIV is now just another long-term illness, not a death sentence.
People .... listen to me, fetal tissue research has saved many millions of lives. Think of this research as a vehicle by which God has given science a way to cure more diseases, alleviate human suffering and extend life for millions of people all over the world. Fetal tissues is nothing other than exactly that, human cellular tissue.
