Legal experts stunned by DA'''s '''barbaric''' move to send Manafort to Rikers Island | Fox News

Scott Hechinger, a public defender in Brooklyn, also criticized the decision.

"Rikers Island & Solitary Confinement are both tortures *no one* should be subjected to," Hechinger tweeted Tuesday. "By supporting solitary for Manafort, we support an immoral, barbaric, cruel & unusual practice. Torture w/ long lasting, debilitating mental health consequences. And solitary for one means solitary is available for all."

Solitary confinement at one of the the most notorious prisons in the nation for a guy convicted of white collar crimes with no history of violence.

Kind of hard to argue that this isn't purely political and utterly grotesque.

Who do you think deserves to go to Rikers?

Probably for his own good, (solitary.) What are your thoughts on the 9000+ other inmates @ Rikers Island?

That's my question.

If a criminal like Manafort is too good for Rikers, then it should just be shut down.

Maybe it should be shut down anyway since it's so poorly managed. But Manafort is not too good for it.

Almost the entire prison population of Rikers consists of remanded defendants awaiting trial. A white collar crime is still a crime and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be sent to Rikers like everyone else. As for solitary - I have my doubts that it’s necessary but I also have doubts about the wisdom of sending a millionaire with his connections to mill around with the general pop.

It's political. Trying to pressure him into squealing on Trump no doubt.

Rikers Island - Wikipedia

Rikers Island has a reputation for abuse and neglect of inmates, attracting increased media and judicial scrutiny that has resulted in numerous rulings against the New York City government. It is also notorious for numerous assaults by inmates on uniformed and civilian staff, resulting in often serious injuries. In May 2013, Rikers Island ranked as one of the ten worst correctional facilities in the United States, based on reporting in Mother Jones magazine.[12] Violence on Rikers Island has been increasing in recent years. In 2015 there were 9,424 assaults, the highest number in 5 years

My concern isn't for the inmates, including(soon to be) Manafort.

My concern is that the state of New York has now weaponized the process.

They are sending him there as a form of retribution and it is dead-bang obvious.

They are sending him there because that is where remanded defendants go. Why should he be treated differently than any other defendant?

It is one of many places where remanded defendants go.

"Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, pursuing the progressive agenda of ending solitary confinement in prisons, chose an unlikely symbol for the cause Wednesday: Paul Manafort. Reacting to the news on Twitter Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez, whose district includes the island in the East River where the complex of jails is located, called solitary confinement “torture” and said Manafort “should be released, along with all people being held in solitary.” “A prison sentence is not a license for gov torture and human rights violations,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “That’s what solitary confinement is.” Progressive activists and organizations including the American Civil Liberties Union have called for an end to solitary confinement, which many prisons use as a form of punishment for inmates who break the rules. It typically means locking the prisoner in his or her cell for 23 hours a day. "

Poor folks, of course. Rich folks deserve better - look it up.

I think Manafort is in the pauper class, unless he hid some assets.

wonder if she realizes if released into general...Manafort becomes easy target....anybody?

Perhaps, but Manafort will be adding his name to a long list of high profile individuals and celebrities who have spent time at Rikers and there’s no good reason why he should be given white glove treatment instead.

Well, on that I agree with her. I am for the end of solitary confinement.

Just saying that the convicted criminal Manafort isn't too good for the conditions that poor defendants have to endure.

The extreme abuse of Manafort - pre-trial literally banning him from preparing a defense putting him in solitary with no conviction history and allegation of a non-violent crime - even just denying him bail - and now this - makes it truthful if a person claims the Bill Of Rights can be thrown out anytime federal law enforcement wants to. This is KGB stuff.

It is a federal conviction. Sending him to Rikers - and then solitary - is sadistic and outrageous. This is for non-violent FEDERAL crimes. People have died in solitary at Rikers - and the abuse by guards of such inmates is well documented - denied water, starved, denied medical care, scalded to death, beaten to death.

It is either personally retaliatory by the radical DEMOCRAT FBI team of the Mueller team or to try to do everything possible to bait the President into commuting his sentence - then use that to claim "obstruction of justice!" for impeachment.

From what I understand white collar criminals are usually put in certain prisons to await trial and non white collar criminals go elsewhere. They draw the distinction because more guards, security, protection etc is needed at one and not the other. Its not all about the money at this point but rather level of security. After his sentencing then he would go to a mininum security facility as opposed to a maximum facility. We can recall Martha Stewart and the references to her being in "cupcake prison."

Indeed. Rikers is among the worst of the worst and is slated by Mayor DeBlasio to be closed within the next few years.

At this point, who's putting pressure on Manafort to squeal on the Trump campaign?

Maybe you're right.
Maybe Manafort should be dumped in the general population.

What does Manafort think?
Would Manafort like to be placed in the general population?

To be fair folks can end up in Rikers for walking out of a convenience store with a straw.
So someone who committed conspiracy against the US seem to be overqualified for doing some jail time while he awaits more trials.
