[W:152] Legal experts stunned by DA's 'barbaric' move to send Manafort to Rikers Island

The solitary confinement aspect is odd though. Putting him in protective custody would make more sense.

What is the difference at this facility?

My concern isn't for the inmates, including(soon to be) Manafort. My concern is that the state of New York has now weaponized the process.

Oh to be so naive and clueless, oh how I long for my salad days...

Fact is the legal process has been 'weaponized' across the entire Grand and Glorious Republic. From nasty ol' New York to any of your cherished fly-over states. Where have you been??? Every confinement facility has the ability to mix and match prisoners to get a point across- a newbie can go into the several different holding cells- from first time non violent offenders to hardened repeat offenders- dealers and murderers.

Want to soften up someone??? Put them in the 'hard' cell for a day, let them see what 'real' prison looks, smells, tastes like. The defendant thinks he will get special treatment in YOUR jurisdiction???? Thinks your jurisdiction is small potatoes compared to the Feds??? Thinks the Feds will step in and 'help' him....

AHHHH Nope, you are swimming with sharks and the Feds put a chum necklace on his ass.

Like it or not this is happening to millions of citizens- 'poor' Manafort is not being targeted, he is being treated like everyone else...

And solitary is probably the safest place for him... :peace

Not white collar criminals.

Steal a billion go to a country club prison, steal $10 go to Rikers?

Deterrence is needed for white collar criminals as well

It is a federal conviction. Sending him to Rikers - and then solitary - is sadistic and outrageous. This is for non-violent FEDERAL crimes. People have died in solitary at Rikers - and the abuse by guards of such inmates is well documented - denied water, starved, denied medical care, scalded to death, beaten to death.

It is either personally retaliatory by the radical DEMOCRAT FBI team of the Mueller team or to try to do everything possible to bait the President into commuting his sentence - then use that to claim "obstruction of justice!" for impeachment.

A state judge sent him in a state matter unrelated to him betraying his country.

Someone who stills ten bucks isn't going Rikers. That's a misdemeanor.

Not white collar criminals.

While white collar crimes are kess graphic and more complicated, they generally hurt far more people than many common criminals do.

I would be surprised if the majority of the Riker's population ever had a trial.

Considering the leniency shown in sentencing, he should feel lucky he’s not spending the rest of his life in prison for his crimes.

Hilarious... The right puts brown children in cages, but putting a rich older white guy convicted of fraud...and frankly a traitor...in the same prison as most people is suddenly a scandal....

White collar crimes are victimless crimes.

White-collar crime - Wikipedia
From your source:

Therefore, blue-collar crime will more often use physical force, whereas in the corporate world, the identification of a victim is less obvious and the issue of reporting is complicated by a culture of commercial confidentiality to protect*shareholder*value. It is estimated that a great deal of white-collar crime is undetected or, if detected, it is not reported.

Why? He's currently a prisoner under sentence for his guilt in a dozen felonies. They can't release a con serving his sentence.

Corporations are people, now? :lamo

FYI unless the poster is referring to something else, protective custody refers to custody not held within a penal institution.

If so, releasing him to protective custody makes no sense to me. Manafort is a convict serving a long sentence for a dozen felonies. Why would anyone let him out?

That's my question.

If a criminal like Manafort is too good for Rikers, then it should just be shut down.

Maybe it should be shut down anyway since it's so poorly managed. But Manafort is not too good for it.

Cool, now we know where to send Obama and his minions for spying on their political opponents.

Trump and his kids will be there first.

If you defraud someone out of 10K, who is the victim of your crime apdst? Nobody?

It's for political prisoners, too.

It's for detainees who would be in jeopardy in the general population, has a history of communicating ILLEGALLY with witnesses and possible co-conspirators, and needs to be given a strong message the kid gloves are off- this is the real justice system that really doesn't care what he knows about others... :peace

Just want to point out that apdst believes you cannot be the victim of a white collar crime as a private citizen.

That's special.
