A 16-year-old'''s MAGA hat was blurred out of his high school yearbook - CNN

The boys' photo ended up in the high school's yearbook, but with a slight change. The MAGA embroidery was blurred out in their photo so it only appeared as if they were wearing red hats, according to CNN affiliate WPMT-TV.

The mom says:
Gebhart said she believes someone blurred out the MAGA hats in order to "make their own statement."
The school says:
Littlestown Area School District Superintendent Christopher Bigger released a statement Thursday saying he was aware of the situation and that "a mistake was made."

"The mistake was not noticed during the editorial preview process prior to print," Bigger's statement read. "We apologize on behalf of the yearbook club. It is not the policy or practice of the district to improperly censor speech."

So who do you beleive the mom that this was a deliberate act? Or the school who says it was an honest mistake?

Unless other hats were also blurred I have a hard time believing this was an accident especially with reports of people wearing MAGA clothing harassed receiving almost weekly news coverage.

If the school has a policy of not wearing political messages fine, the kids shouldn't of been allowed to wear their hats to begin with. If the picture didn't make the cut fine the boys weren't yearbook material. But putting it in and blurring it out just doesn't seem like an accident. At some point someone had to of used a photo editing software program to have the rest of the picture be so clear except for the hat. To me it seems the school district is blowing smoke and trying to cover up its poor choice.

What's your opinions?

Slow news day.

If you ask me the year book committee did those MAGA hat wearers a favor. In years gone it will save them the embarrassment of having to explain to their children how they were conned by an unstable moron.

Not sure what was so great about the photo that it earned a spot in the yearbook to begin with. They probably should have left it out and thus avoided any controversy.

Was this a candid shot? Maybe the picture was of several students involved in an activity, and the editors (students generally) looked to make it a non controversial shot.

I think the mother is over reacting, an example of the extreme emotions the MAGA hat seems to engender. It's a freaking hat, your son's Constitutional rights have not been violated.

I just saw the actual photo....I'm with the editors...the yearbook should be an album of pictures of people and places...not political statements that will be incomprehensible by the time these two individuals take the time to look back at their yearbook. I would probably just not carry the shot rather than go to the trouble of making it everyday high school stuff....like standing in the cafeteria, not needing to make a political statement every minute of your life.

I dont see how blurring out a picture on purpose could be an honest mistake.

Very simple. Mom.

Didn't notice during the editorial review? Come on.

They look at hands to make sure nobody is flipping the bird. They didn't notice the hat was blurred out?

Both could be true - that it was a deliberate act to edit it out, and that the school didn't catch the intentional edit during their review.

All it would take is one person to edit it and not tell anyone.

Yeah because jobs and the economy are currently horrific.

Our yearbooks are created by student committees. I think a student tried to make a nice shot of the boys something other than a MAGA hat statement, and the review didn't catch it.
I think Mom needs to get a life.

So you dont care about freedom of speech if its a Republican getting thrown under the bus?

Someone call Hannity!! These HS students don't realize wearing a MAGA hat lowers your IQ. Its the 2019 version of a tin foil hat.

More PC crap....... They hate Trump so...........

Hey maybe they should reprint the yearbook with the hat in the original condition, not blurred out?

Gebhart said she believes someone blurred out the MAGA hats in order to "make their own statement."

"It's OK to disagree with people's views, but what's not OK is taking your freedom of speech and using it to take away someone else's," she said.

May be school uniforms or a strict dress code aren't such a bad idea in general.

So you dont care about freedom of speech if its a Republican getting thrown under the bus?

This has absolutely nothing to do with Freedom of Speech. The yearbook is not a political statement. The picture could have easily just been left out.

Someone probably 16 years old tried to include a picture of two classmates, and logically saw the hats as an issue. Which of course is why the boys wore the hats...to create an issue.

No one was thrown under the bus. The boys appear in a candid shot in their yearbook, which is not a constitutionally guaranteed right. Mom should spend some time complimenting the student staff, rather than having a melt down over a MAGA hat.

Just a plain stupid comment!! ^^^^
This is what Trump hates does to a person. :doh

About what I figured.

How is it any less of a political statement to blur the hats and include them in the yearbook?

I agree with many here they should of chosen diffent pictures than the ones of these kids in their hats.

Gerhart should realize that there was no right to have a candid shot in the yearbook at all. The act of cleaning up the picture had nothing to do with free speech.

Crazies are so attached to these hats, Trump should double the price.

Yes, the Nazi Fascist Democratic Party wants the government to establish an agency to strictly police everything anyone may or may not wear, may or may not say, who may and may not be their friends and what you may and not think.

The United States and Americans have never faced as great a danger to our nation that the Fascist Democratic Party - which it ever obtains true total control the result will be the greatest genocide since disease killed 90% of Indigenous Americans. Every American who is not rich or willing to be a slave should vote straight Republican for every office in every election as if their family's, friend's and neighbors lives depend upon it - because ultimately it does.

Did the guys have a right to have that picture in the yearbook? Pretty sure the answer to that is "no".

Editors should have just left the photo out.

It was an act to make the picture non political, and to include a candid picture of two guys who were friends. Donald Trump does not need to be memorialized in the yearbook.

I think I agree that no good deed goes unpunished, and a psycho mom got her 10 minutes of fame.

Many, if not most WHITE progressive Democrats hate all human and civil rights and demand the Bill Of Rights be erased entirely. They are more than crazy. They are Jim Jones cultist mass suicidal. The transformation of the Democratic Party to being corporate fascists - including many of their cultists on this forum - is happening an breakneck speed.

Freedom of speech does not apply to high school kids.

Many schools have policies against political speech or wearing political labels that could be considered offensive.

Freedom of speech does apply to high school kids -- at least to some extent.

What rights to freedom of expression do students have? | Freedom Forum Institute

A question is whether this school does have a policy against political or offensive clothing.

But that's a separate question from the yearbook, I think. The people who put the yearbook together had a lot of latitude. They had thousands of photos and left thousands out, and did not need to include that one. They messed up by including it at all.
