BREAKING: Theresa May announces her resignation

Theresa May has announced she will step down as UK Prime Minister, after three bruising years that saw her fail to deliver Brexit.

May said Friday she would quit as leader of the Conservative Party on Friday June 7.

Her announcement triggers the start of a contest to replace her as Conservative leader and Prime Minister.

Not surprising given how badly the Brexit deal has been handled.

About time. She was so incompetent I cant believe she stayed in power that long.

Trump needs the brexit

I said all along when people were considering which way to vote that perhaps the greatest uncertainty associated with leaving the EU is that no country has ever done it before, so no one can/could predict the exact resulting consequences of a yes vote. It's new ground.

A big reason why Brexit is like watching a train crash in slow motion.....

Not surprising given how badly the Brexit deal has been handled.

No, not surprising at all.

Both from the point of view that as soon as a political party in the UK gains power, the far reaches of that party will then spend their whole time trying to get their own people into a position of power, regardless of the fact that these people will then be unelectable, and from the point of view that struggling against the ridiculous hardcore Brexiters was never going to allow her to get anything half way decent put through.

The issue now is who will take over.

Probably some other moderate, with Boris Johnson then trying to take them down for however long it takes, with him thinking he'll be the next Tory PM.

What will it mean for the Tories? Can they put someone in place who can do better than May at a General Election? How will Corbyn deal with an "unelected PM"? Will he hammer it home every day?

Will the UK manage to leave the EU? Will the next PM have to be someone who will take the UK out of the EU, and will the DUP go along with them or will there be a GE by Monday?

But then again, there are certain things which are a given, like driving your train into another train is probably going to end in a train crash. However the hardcore Brexiters would dismiss this by simply saying "ah, it'll be okay" without say how it would be okay.

It is one of the most amazing political implosions I've seen, Brexit has brought that nation to a crawl and the Conservative Party over there seems without any options.

At this point I am not convinced that anyone else will deliver Brexit, the odds of a no-deal just shot up.

Arise Ser Boris

I wasn't surprised by her announcement and doubt many people were/are.

My only concern is that nut Boris Johnson taking over.

Theresa May has said she will quit as Conservative leader on 7 June, paving the way for a contest to decide a new prime minister.

In an emotional statement, she said she had done her best to deliver Brexit and it was a matter of "deep regret" that she had been unable to do so.

Mrs May said she would continue to serve as PM while a Conservative leadership contest takes place.
The party said it hoped a new leader could be in place by the end of July.

It means Mrs May will still be prime minister when US President Donald Trump makes his state visit to the UK at the start of June.

Mrs May announced she would step down as Tory leader on 7 June and had agreed with the chairman of Tory backbenchers that a leadership contest should begin the following week.

Theresa May has been under intense pressure to leave for a long time. Britain is as hopelessly divided as the US is and perhaps no politician could have made a success of Brexit.

I would think that Ms May would be glad to Brexit Brexit. The original referendum had a similar feel to NOV16. Everyone went to bed certain that what actually happened would never come to pass.

I disagree. The UK is not as divided as the US. The Conservative UK is as divided but they only account for 30 or so percent of the population. The rest are all in agreement that the Tories suck and are to blame for all the problems we see now. Problem is it is the same Tories who have to call an election which they want to avoid at all costs....

Picking Boris would be like the Titanic hitting the iceberg, then turning around for another go.
To be fair most leading Tories would be like that.. Not a human among them..

It's somehow heartwarming to see that the UKs right wingers are just as incompetent as the US's.

How long before they start accusing May of deliberately screwing up Brexit on orders from the Deep State?

She's too late leaving by a good margin.

How utterly disgraceful - and thoroughly predictable - that after the people have spoken on Brexit, it still hasn't happened.

Shameful.

A clown car refugee. Incredibly, he has a very good chance of succeeding May.

Such accusations have been flying from the Brexiters since we missed the original date! They're less overt about the "Deep State" per se, simply accusing her of not actually wanting Brexit, but the suggestion is there in the background.

Who could have guessed?

Good Riddance, May. Worthless.
