San Francisco just banned facial-recognition technology

Wow... The 'less government' and 'get out of our lives' Conservatives and so called 'Libertarians' are FOR facial recognition cameras in the streets so the government can track your every move?

Politics has become to new religion in this country. Of all the things cons have flipped on recently to defend and excuse the modern Republican Party, THIS is a hypocrisy biggie..

Many of them believe in authoritarianism just as long as their ideology is what is being forced onto others. Once a Democrat gets in office they whip out their don't tread on me motto and become these most libertarian freedom loving patriots imaginable.

Remember how Obama was a "dictator"? Now Trump isn't a dictator, he's a "strong leader" or simply "trolling libruls". You can't take anything these people say seriously.

The fact that the nerds that create this technology don't want it in their neighborhoods should tell you all you need to know about it.

You are missing the point. Fact remains that neither fingerprint or DNA can be or is collected from the public for the purpose of searching for possible wrongdoing.

Try to get a gun permit w/o fingerprint submission.

San Francisco just banned facial-recognition technology[/h]San Francisco (CNN Business)San Francisco, long one of the most tech-friendly and tech-savvy cities in the world, is now the first in the United States to prohibit its government from using facial-recognition technology.

This is an interesting development.

Immigrants can be photographed on entering the country and then tracked with facial recognition technology, so I can imagine one way in which San Francisco leaders would object to it. Police can find out where any person who has ever had a mug shot is.

They are out to ruin San Francisco even more than they already have. They are making it a magnet for criminals and illegals.

Indeed. But that FR prohibition only applies to the San Francisco government writ large, and I agree with it.

Cities these days have security cameras literally everywhere. I don't want any city agency able to track our movements throughout the day.

That's a recipe for getting doxed by unscrupulous government employees.

We should have facial recognition cameras. You have no right to walk freely without fear of being seen if you have an arrest warrant or are wanted by the police

Amazon and Google will pay handsomely for this data.

Scroll down and find all the "Obama is a King / dictator" stuff.

“Barack Obama is a king, not a president,” blared the headline of an opinion piece on Fox News’s website.

"He may think he’s king, he may declare he’s a king, but that’s not what he is under the Constitution,” then-Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said. Bachmann added at another point, “He has rewritten the Constitution for himself as a part of his effort to fundamentally transform the United States of America.”

Books were written about Obama’s “imperial” presidency. Carly Fiorina said in 2016 that Obama’s executive actions rendered him a “lawless president."

Obama was frequently labeled “lawless” by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and others when he undertook perhaps his most controversial executive action: Offering deportation relief to the children of undocumented immigrants, a program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), the House speaker at the time, said Obama was acting like a “king or emperor.” Boehner said Republicans “will not stand idle as the president undermines the rule of law in our country and places lives at risk."

As ****ed up as I find Sanfrancisco to be they are right on this. Governments shouldn't be tracking citizens and treating them like they are guilty.

San Francisco just became the first city to ban the use of facial recognition technology by government entities. Oakland may be next.

Let's ban license plate, fingerprint and DNA recognition technology too.

License plates identify the car, not the driver and the other two requiring an official warrant or charge of some kind to use against you.

Along the same lines, licence plate reading should be also outlawed.

Libertarian - Right

LOL

Or it is meant to prevent the dystopian future in which the government tracks a persons movements to ensure civil obedience. Imagine that ability in the hands of a less than trustworthy government.

Tracking person X from place to place, seeing they had contact with a person the government deems a threat. Arrests person X for enhanced interrogation to see what they were doing and why.

Certainly facial recognition could be very useful in keeping society safe, but it can very easily be turned to a means of government oppression
Absolutely true which is why the devil is in the details. I dont think banning technology is ever the correct approach but i do think the laws must be written very specific to how its sllowed and not allowed to be used. I slso would want to see some very stern punitive consequences for a uses of the law.

It's San Francisco so they are automatically against it, even thou it falls inline with their supposed belief system.
Polictics is the ultimate team sport right now.

Or by the government for whatever reason, make one up. Thought you were a Conservative, I must be mistaken......

One thing that has been very apparent is the party in power gets to decide what laws they can ignore now.
