Facebook busts Israel-based campaign to disrupt elections

Facebook says it has identified a private Israel-based influence campaign aimed at disrupting elections in various countries and has canceled dozens of accounts that engaged in spreading disinformation.

Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook's head of cybersecurity policy, told reporters Thursday the tech giant had purged 65 accounts, 161 pages and dozens of groups.

He says they primarily posed as political candidates and peddled fake news about elections, mostly in Sub-Saharan African countries, and with some scattered activity in Southeast Asia. The pages racked up 2.8 million followers and hundreds of thousands of views.

COMMENT:-

Obviously "Fake News" because the Israelis are staunch defenders of freedom and democracy and no one in Israel would even dream of doing something like this.

Right?

Ha!

Hilarious. :)

But Facebook has - yet again - done the wrong thing.

Not a fan of Facebook...

But kudos for getting it right.

I see.

So you would consider that any exposure of criminal and/or immoral and/or unethical behaviour as being evidence that the person exposing it is "anti-Semitic" if the person who had done the criminal and/or immoral and/or unethical behaviour happened to be Jewish.

OK, now please give me the URL of the website that you have established to fund your campaign to obtain an unconditional pardon for Meier Suchowlański, Arnold Rothstein, Meyer Harris Cohen, Arthur Simon Flegenheimer, and Benjamin Siegel (amongst others).

Yes I would.

Please stop talking about the Israelis in an unflattering way, you're part of the problem. Anti-Semitism is the problem, not Israeli campaigns to interfere in elections. America and Russia do it all the time.

Why do you hate the Jews?

So if the Israeli government decided that it would be appropriate to assassinate the President of the United States of America, and did so, it would be - according to you - anti-Semitic to say anything about it?

Yeah, right, sure.

Why do you hate the Jews?

Since I consider that a person's religion (or physical characteristics [or gender {or gender orientation <or political alignment>}]) to be irrelevant when assessing that person's actions, you question makes no sense at all.

Why do you support the commission of criminal acts simply because the person committing them is Jewish?

Oy vey...for someone who drops sarcasm like a prom date on Saturday morning, you sure don't recognized it when it's kicking you in the taint, do you??

Nevermind...sheesh! I agree with you. Dang!

Are you serious, or taking a page out of my pal TU's sarcasm book?

EDIT: Being sarcastic; that's a relief...

Israelis come in all types, and political hacks are not unheard among them. This outfit is no more indicative of the general character of Israelis than Media Matters is of Americans.

Obviously. There is no way our staunch ally would EVER do anything to further its own political interests via the US government. Why I never! Clearly this is anti-Semitic fake news.

:)

To some people, the statement "The weather in Tel Aviv today is not as pleasant as it is in Tampa." qualifies as "anti-Semitic" (because it says "bad things" about Israel).

To those people the statement "Mass killer in Tel Aviv shoots 75 people, beats previous world's record set by American." would not qualify as "anti-Semitic" (because it says "laudatory things" about Israel).

Not sure where you anti-Israel bias stems from. No reason to hazard a guess here.

That being said this was a private firm. Pretty sure wherever you come from also has a criminal element.

Please stop being so anti Semitic.

Where do you get the poster is being anti-semitic? Outing a country doing this kind of thing should happen more. No country should be involved in another's elections and that especially goes for america. Freedom and democracy doesn't only come through warfare and this is twenty first century warfare and should be fought on all fronts. You brought the religious aspect into the discussion not the OP.

The thing is this will often tie back to their government since affecting elections is for political purposes.

I caught it pretty quickly myself :p

Has this been tied back. Or is your hatred of Israel leading you to this conclusion. Again not sure where your anti-Israel bias comes from. Can guess but perhaps you can enlighten us.

We really should reconsider our alliance with Israel. It is a rather vicious ethnostate that we should stop defending.

I do love the magical leap of criticism of any country means there is hatred. It's a nonsensical leap to make since I have not mentioned anything that indicates I have any hatred toward Israel or its people. Critiquing any nation's policies and actions doesn't mean a person hates a country or its people; it can simply be a criticism of actions. So is your position that any critique of Israel immediately implies a hatred toward the country and its people? Do you apply this flawed logic to everything?

As for the private institution in question (Archimedes Group), who tends to benefit from influencing politics and elections; particularly at the level which benefits foreign nations?

OlNate was being facetious, and free speech - it's speaking/writing and hearing/reading - is a precious right to be protected.

These attacks upon it are the true danger.

Indeed.

But it's Fortress America in the region, so...

Oh - and the whole biblical association is REALLY big with certain hardcore Christians.

So Israel gets away with murder.

Literally.
