U.S. combat veteran charged with plotting to bomb white nationalist rally

White nationalist?

“According to the criminal complaint, an FBI operative established contact with Domingo in a private online chat room in March, leading to discussions in which Domingo expressed support for Islamic militants and the desire to seek revenge for attacks on Muslims.”

He intended to bomb white nationalists.

I dunno. This guy obviously was full of bad ideas, but they "got him" by offering to sell him bombs, and then arresting him when he agreed.

What he actually did was talk loud and ugly online, and be so wildly incompetent he tried to buy bombs from strangers online.

Just not a giant fan of these "stings" that seem to be very good at drawing Internet tough guys or just really dumb people.

They just don't track as real threats. Without the FBI egging them on, there's nothing there but crazy talk, which is just as good to the 1st as the sane stuff.

Good points.

Good points.

Except for a few facts:

1. He already had purchased bomb materials before the FBI got involved.
2. He scouted the location with informants and selected locations for the bombs.
3. He put a bomb in an informant's car for transportation to the location.

He wasn't joking.

He had already purchased bomb components. He was supplied a fake charge. He scouted the location a decided where to put the bombs. He put a bomb in an informant's car. He was gonna do it.

From OP article:

What's not clear - and I missed this at first; my bad - is to what extent he was drawn into the behavior.

Entrapment is definitely an issue to be discussed, and it wouldn't be the first time the FIBbers had done something like this.

I pretty much side with The Man on entrapment. I like to think it's about personal responsibility but it's probably because of privilege.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A U.S. veteran of the war in Afghanistan who prosecutors say plotted to detonate a nail bomb at a Los Angeles-area white nationalist rally, hoping to cause mass casualties, was arrested in an FBI sting operation, federal prosecutors said on Monday.

*sigh*

This will only add more fuel to the fires being stoked by the race baiters on both sides.

Good. Something needs to be done about the crazy leftists using violence against peaceful political dissidents.

If 1. is accurate, he could have been legitimately charged for this.

The rest is entrapment.

It would be entrapment if they arrested him for possession of explosives. But that's not what happened. He tried to use the explosives. And that's what he was arrested for.

Perhaps the attempted bomber does, but his opinion doesn't matter.

It just seemed kinda weird.

"I condemn murder."

"Me too."

Well, timing is everything.

Once the FIBbers began to entice him into alleged further crimes, entrapment.

We have no way to know how much was the guy, and how much was being nudged by the FBI. It might be that if they hadn't become involved, it never would have progressed past talk. Buying bulk nails isn't exactly a risky venture, and everything else was guided and informed, to some extent, by the FBI.

Serious bombers don't purchase bombs, they make them.
They don't plant explosives they haven't tested.
They don't share their plans with strangers.

So at a minimum, I question the guys competence. I also doubt he had the wherewithal to produce a bomb unassisted, and the rest is all just talk and driving around looking at stuff.

He might have been a threat, or he might have been a suggestible goofball who could only be a true threat to someone if you held his hand through every step.

Excellent points.

But what about your jackboot fruit?

Maybe. But it can be argued that sometimes entrapment is entirely justified. Imo saving lives takes priority over legal technicalities.

Two phrases that give me the willies, "If just one life is saved, it's worth it!" and "What are you afraid of it you have nothing to hide?"
I don't know if this counts as entrapment but this, "undercover FBI operatives furnished him with what he thought were live bombs" sounds pretty close to the line. Not long ago here, Canada, a case was thrown out of court when the judge said the RCMP went too far over the line settingnup a pair of bumbling idiot wannabes.

Cops have to follow rules and if they don't they risk torpedoing their own investigations. I don't say this case is entrapment but if it is someone needs his pee-pee slapped.

We'll see. It might depend on what degree of encouragement the guy got.

Glad they got this psycho.

Man do some people hate free speech...

I only hate free speech when the speakers are connected to an ideology known to have a verified, documented historical body count of dead innocent people (non military - non aggressors)... because in the end, when it comes to speech like that, it turns out that Karl Popper was right.

The intolerant WILL use the tools of tolerance to destroy tolerance.

WAGER: I will pay you ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS via PayPal if you can show me ONE instance, a single instance, of "PEACEFUL ETHNIC CLEANSING", that is, where the people being "cleansed" voluntarily agreed to give up their homes, jobs and possessions and be cast out.
Richard Spencer, a well known white nationalist, repeatedly talks in glowing terms of wishing for a "peaceful ethnic cleansing" in order to achieve his desired "white ethno state".

Since it's rather obvious that there is no instance of "peaceful" ethnic cleansing in all of recorded history, it is clear that white nationalists seek BLOODY ethic cleansing, as in "The Final Solution".

Free speech? No...Refined Tincture of Bovine Excrement, and now the truth finally comes out:
You support white nationalists. Why didn't you just say so before?

FBI guys have a reputation of being very much career minded. A "big" bust like this, flags them as effective agents. I'd guess they have their technical/legal ducks in a row, and this guy is going to prison. **** him for being an idiot, anyhow.

My objection is that I believe resources they spend chasing Internet goofs and making feel good arrests do very little to make us safer.

I'd love to believe I'm wrong, but this sort of "groom them into a half-assed terrorist, and declare victory" operation seems to be the best they can manage.

Why do these religious extremists never put two and two together and realize if you bomb your enemy, they will now have a million more ideological reasons to keep doing what they're doing?

Can you imagine if a Muslim extremist bombed a white nationalist rally? It would just give them proof that there's an ethnic conspiracy.

It's one big face palm. I'm glad they caught him. The last thing we need is to fight extremists with extremists.

Probably a simple case of not being able to see the crazy forest from the crazy tree.

You don't seem to mind socialists excercising free speech.

The arrested US combat veteran had converted to Islam ... he was a Muslim.
