The report omits a salient fact: on 11 April the Sri Lankan police issued a warning (received from a 'foreign intelligence agency') that a local Muslim group, the NTJ, was planning to bomb churches.

Given the target was churches I'm inclined to think they were Muslim extremists rather than Tamil separatists.

If true, then there's criminal negligence by Sri Lankan authorities for the bombings to still happen and now more than 150 die.

An appalling act, my sympathies go to those affected and the families of the dead.

Sad news. My heart goers out to the victims and their families.

Ive always thought the Sri Lankan conflict was about Hindus versus Buddhists since there arent many Christians or Muslims in that country. I guess I'll have to wait and see until there's more information about this.

I see no reason to doubt that this was the work of Muslim extremists. At least a dozen or two must have been involved, unlike the Christchurch mosque attack which was carried out by a lone fanatic

This massacre is indeed a shame, But an act of Islamic terror has little, if anything, to do with the Sinhalese/Tamil civil war.

Violent Buddhists would be my guess.

The Sri Lankan constitution gives special privileges to Buddhism, which is practiced by 70% of the country, and does not protect freedom of religion for other faiths. Muslims (13%) and Christians (7%) have been subject to frequent attacks by Buddhist extremists, particularly the group Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), also known as Buddhist Power Force.

When Christians get killed, they are somehow deserving of it due to past "karma."

That's how many people on this board think.

A horrific act is on a holy day for Christians. My thoughts go out to all those suffering as a result of this despicable act of terrorism. What is going to make it harder to take is the fact there was an intelligence report warning of the attack. I hope they apprehend those responsible and they're punished to the full extent of the law.

I wouldn't put it past the BBS since they've been actively targeting Muslims and Christians in Sri Lanka. I think it's time for the Sri Lankan government to think about equal protection for practitioners of all faiths if they really want to think of themselves as a multicultural society. Protection for Buddhists alone isn't enough when you have these kind of issues. We'll have to wait for confirmation on who is responsible, but given the threat faced by Muslims and Christians, I'd think they have bigger fish to fry than attacking each other.

I join other members and guests in expressing my deepest sympathies to the victims' families.

There are no words in the English language to describe the kind of individuals who would do something like that. (At least no words that would be permitted in open forum.)

Hopefully, Sri Lanka still has capital punishment for such individuals.
