It all went down at North Pole High School in North Pole, Alaska — a small, Christmas-loving city just southeast of Fairbanks — on the morning of April 4. The Snap at issue: a student transitioning from female to male posted a selfie from the boys’ bathroom.

Some boys at the high school who saw the selfie, however, were angry, and decided they would walk into the girls’ bathroom to take their own Snapchat selfie “as a form of protest,” Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Superintendent Karen Gaborik told The Washington Post. But they would not get far. The first boy to enter the girls’ room was met by a girl ― who kneed him in the groin. With that, the “protest” was over.

And now the girl has been expelled, her family told The Post.

Boys stormed a girls’ bathroom to ‘protest.’ A girl got expelled for fighting back, family says.

The article does later say that the girl was suspended (not expelled), and the boys involved were disciplined. Also, according to the family, the boys were blocking the door, and the girls couldn't leave, hence a split second decision to apply the knee.

In my mind, this really isn't about transgender rights at all. It doesn't sound like the girls even knew what was going on when the boys stormed in. I'm not clear on why that becomes a part of the debate. I would fully expect my daughters to defend themselves if boys 'stormed' the restroom and blocked the door. I question why the young lady was even punished, and certainly suspension is excessive.

This sounds to me like another example of schools punishing both the target and the aggressor in a physical attack. I see it happen frequently. School administrators seem to expect people to just let themselves be beaten. If they defend themselves, they're treated as equally guilty.

Happenend to my daughter. Older boy tripped her in the hallway, she got up and pushed him down....

And off to the principles office we went.

Probably just me, I'd be disappointed if she only used a knee.....once.

I like how they inserted "a small, Christmas loving city" like that has anything to do with anything.

On topic, the girl had the right to defend herself. Also the school is claiming she was suspended while her family is claiming she was expelled. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this.

Exactly, I've told her, she doesn't start anything, but she darn well put a finish to everything.

And schools wonder why they can't stop bullying.

Yes, Zero Tolerance = Zero Common Sense = You have no trust in the judgement of the employees. I don't understand why we hire school administrators if we don't trust them to make good decisions - especially when those 'zero tolerance' policies so often result in bad decisions.

I also think there has to be some latitude here. Expulsion seems way too severe.

In this case, they weren't treated equally. It sounds like the girl received a much more severe punishment.

In my experience, girls often do. Especially if they win.

If it happened to my daughter I’d tell how proud I was of her in defending herself from some cretin and then I’d go have a chat with the principal.

The young lady shouldn’t of been expelled/suspended for kneeing the boy. She does deserve punishment for challenging why a boy was in the womans bathroom. That kind of transphobic behavior can not be tolerated in public schools.

Perhaps that was the thought. The girls had no right to keep the boys out of any bathroom.

DIdnt read the article yet but going by your op what the boys were doing was beyond stupid and rightfully so one of them was taken out for blocking a girl in the restroom.

I dont think the girl should be punished but MANY schools operate on this ZERO TOLERANCE nonsense policy. Seems like the boy wasnt suspended it though, he should have been otherwise the girl's punishment is even worse.

also i agree THIS has just about nohting to do with gender rights.

Give that girl and award. Quick reflexes.

It was an obvious pun on the name of the town.

For those confused by the girl's punishment, you can't severely batter someone because they're doing something stupid.

I disagee. Boys in general are not allowed in girls bathrooms - boys transitioning to girls or perhaps boys who identify as girls are. That population would represent a tiny subset of all the boys in a school and would likely be well known to the student body. As well he was apparently only the vanguard of a group of boys who attempted to enter the girl’s bathroom.

She had every right to react the way she did.

No she dis not have the right to react aa she did, and no one but thise boys gets to determine how they choose to identify or what restroom they choose to use. This is the new world of tolerance
