Quebec proposes ban on religious clothing for public workers

MONTREAL (AP) — A proposal to ban many public employees from wearing religious clothing is creating a fiery debate in the Canadian province of Quebec, where people are fighting to freely practice their religion — or to be free of it.The measure introduced late last month would prohibit civil servants, teachers, nurses, bus drivers, lawyers and other people who interact with the public from wearing symbols of religion while at work.
It would apply to Sikh turbans, Christian jewelry and Jewish yarmulkes, but the focus of the controversy has been over hijabs worn by many Muslim women in Quebec.
“The proposed legislation will affect Muslims more than other groups as they are the fastest growing religious group,” said Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto. Muslims represent about 3% of Quebec’s 8.3 million people.

I thought Canadians were among the most tolerant of religion in the world?? This bigoted attack against Muslims can not stand in the Great Maple Leaf country....Can it?

I agree with this proposal. Keep your mind shackles to your goddamned self.

Just like playing religious music in the office. Shut it the **** off.

It's Quebec... they're problems with the Muslim community are greater than in the rest of the country.

To be fair, though, I'm a white English speaking guy from Ontario, and they'd ban my ass too if they could.
    Life's too short...

What's the justification for banning "religious clothing" and who gets to decide what is religious and what isn't?

“I think at this point in Quebec in 2019, people who are in an authority position, which includes teachers (shouldn’t wear religious symbols), I think it’s reasonable. It’s fair,” he said. “We have to think about what’s best for our children.”
    That's a little chilling.

I agree with it as someone that is labeled here as a liberal. It's simple matter of separation of church and state you righties have an issue with. Keep your religion in your home, church, synagogue, or mosque if you're government worker. Quit shoving your religion down my throat.

I'm fine with a Sikh wearing a turban, fine with a Christian wearing Christian jewelry and fine with anyone of Jewish faith wearing yarmulkes. I'm also fine with Muslim Women wearing Hijab should they wish.

    Why wouldn't you be?

That being said, I'm sure there are a bunch of people who still have no clue what a Hijab actually is even though this conversation has been had every time hijab is mentioned here but I'm tired of trying to educate the poorly educated and really can't be arsed posting pictures to show folks anymore. Look it up before you say something stupid this time.

The party proposing this is a extreme right-wing Quebecois cultural-supremacist party that are run by a bunch of disgusting bigots that want to purge public service of as many non-Quebecois aliens as possible, but do not have the stones to simply pass Quebec's version of the Nuremberg Laws.

It's things like this that make me so happy the United States broke with the Common Law System and enshrined the recognition of our fundamental rights in our constitution, so that our rights are presumed to be inherent and not leased out to us by the state who can cancel the lease any time.

It’s in the small things that the rot starts. Do the wrong thing once, it’s easier to do it again. Do the individualistic thing once, it is easy to do it again.

I don't want to see any religious garb, period. It is your own personal choice, keep it in your own personal domicile.

    Agreed.

This is chilling/creepy on many levels.
Those who celebrate the persecution, torment and arrest of Julian Assange are neither good citizens nor good human beings, but rather traitors to their country, common sense, and common decency.
