Putting American flags on police cars sparks backlash in Laguna Beach

I would encourage you to look at the design. If anything, the logo softens the look of the car - which otherwise is an all black SUV.

I think you are mistaken. I've never claimed that the design made it look aggressive. People in the article did. I disagree with them. But I can see where they are coming from. If you look at the picture you can see the old design in the back ground. Much less aggressive. I think they should have stuck a new logo, like the one on the new design, on the all white body from the old design. In my city that's what the cop cars and SUV's look like and I think it looks great without giving it that SWAT team look. But at the end of the day you won't hear me complain about either one. My only point is that no where in the article is anyone actually complaining about the flag being on the car. The title is either misleading, or the author did a poor job to not include anyone that is actually saying what she says they are saying.

This is one of my most favorite beach communities in the entire state. There is not a summer where I don't manage to visit.
The entire community is based around the arts. The coastline and the beaches are among the best in the world.
I am not surprised to learn that a few might say the American flag is "too aggressive" but those few are very confused. Whatever happened to "beauty and art is in the eye of the beholder"? Why do a few "artists" like artist Carrie Woodburn, get to tell ME, the beholder, what is too aggressive? Seems hypocritical.

Why does no other cop car in the country have a flag down the side? Everyone except Laguna Beach hates America?

The strangest part is people acting like this is normal. No other cop vehicles in the country sport flags, except these nine of eleven.

Of course when someone has never seen a cop car with a flag on it, it gives pause.

Well, I don't have any problem with it. But I understand the complaint that it makes the car look like more of a federal agent than local police. In reality this is a few people arguing over small details in a city meeting that others are then trying to use to try to act like this is some big issue.

How about the American flags they put on their uniforms?

So a California flag would be more suitable?

There's a reason feds don't advertise, so it's wtf.

Nope, not the flag. Just large parts of the country.

Remember when the Black POTUS candidate didn't wear a flag pin? It was a national crisis for American conservatives, and proved Obama wasn't a real American, but a Muslim terrorist born in Kenya.

Remember when the White POTUS candidate didn't wear a flag pin? Nope, me neither because American conservatives couldn't care less.

It was all about the colour of the candidates skin. To deny that is ridiculous, so how about conservatives start being honest about racism?

It was about a week after the 'no flag pin wearing President Obama' uproar from the future cultists that Sen. McCain appeared on Jay Leno and gues what? He wasn't wearing a flag lapel pin!!! Guess what again? NOtHING was said!!!

My city’s police cars have a flag on them and no one seems to care. Guess some cities are just more accepting than others

I'm sure if they wanted to put an image of Christ in a jar of urine on the car there would be no objections....

What a bunch of mamby pamby snowflakes then....There is one officer per car, and people are cowering in fright if more than one car shows up on a scene? What the hell is the matter with people?

No one said they were cowering in fright.

This is a very simple concept. You and I don't have to agree on it, but I don't think you are as far away from these people on this issue as it seems. They want the cars to look like normal local police cars which typically is not an all black car with an american flag on the side. This issue is made worse by the fact that the city board debated and passed a design after running it by the city citizens and then when time came to implement the design, it was changed. Personally, if I saw on my video doorbell, I'd be more worried if an FBI agent was knocking on my door than a local police officer. Some people are simply worried about wrong impressions that could make people nervous.

What the hell is the matter with people in Cali? Do they really not want to be a part of the USA anymore?
You can not fix stupid and it is not limited to any specific part of the country.

That's not remotely sane.

It puzzles me why a handful of people like this artist think they have the power to change what the majority want. Obviously, the majority voted this council in and they decided that the flag will be the new look of their eleven police vehicle. Of course, the minority has the right to criticize the new design, but they don't have the right to change it.

eta: I read that seven of the eleven cars have already been painted with the Old Glory logo. So don't paint the rest. Seems to be a good enough compromise to me.

Then they are complete wusses....Are you kidding me? Every cop car I see has an American flag in some form or another on it....And I see lots of them traveling the country like I do....If you see one show up outside your door, it may not be the flag that is scaring you, it may be your guilty conscience....;)

No, the design was changed at the last moment and not the one agreed upon.

The city council agreed in February to repaint its all-white squad cars in black and white with the stars and stripes running through the word "police" on the doors. The police department has 11 squad cars.

The proposed graphic that the council unanimously approved in February was a more muted version of the design that now appears on the cars.

That is only for the patrol cars assigned to the museum of modern art.

I'm still waiting for you to back up your claim that no police cars have flags on them except for parades....Got that yet?

One on the side of the vehicle, like that one in Laguna's mistake. Everyone already knows cop cars have little flags. Everyone. So stop acting like you deserve a Nobel.

Remember what we're talking about and accept reality. No other cop cars, in the entire country, do that.

And there's a reason. Let's be smart and consider that.

That's NOT what you said....Would you like me to repost it for you?

Many times I wrote "sporting" and "on the side" and such.

Would there be a thread if Laguna's cars had a little flag like every cop car? No.

Be honest. You know what I meant. That's why you started with parade cars and then went to "what about the little flag!"

I don't personally think the US flag is unsuitable and I don't hate the design of the car. I like the logo, but for local police I think it would look better on the all white car as shown in the back ground of the pic than on the black SUV. The incorporation of the flag looks nice when sitting still, but could likely look a little jumbled when the car is moving. Cleaner is nearly always better to me when logos are being discussed.

I think the purpose of the logo should be to distinguish the car and it's purpose. So the biggest priority should be to get across the message that this is a laguna beach police car. The design could probably do this better if laguna beach was a little bit bigger and the logo, while I do like it, should be a bit cleaner since it's on a car and has to be easily visible when travelling down the interstate for example. I would much prefer the cop cars in my city to that design personally. They integrate the red white and blue very nicely, but it's super easy to read and doesn't look as aggressive or like a federal agent.
