Trump administration moves to undercut MLB'''s deal with Cuba

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration scuttled a landmark deal enabling Cuban baseball players to play on Major League Baseball teams and declared it illegal, the latest move to roll back the warming of relations between the United States and Cuba that began in the Obama administration.

Senior Trump administration officials said they were rescinding an Obama-era decision that deemed Cuba’s baseball league to be separate from the Cuban government. The U.S. economic embargo on Cuba prohibits Americans from doing business with Cuba’s government, so the Obama administration’s ruling had cleared the way for an agreement between MLB and the Cuban Baseball Federation reached late last year.

That deal was designed to allow Cuban baseball players joining U.S. teams without having to defect, as had been the case in years past. Now that the ruling that underpinned the deal is being voided, “that agreement will not be able to proceed in its current form,” one official said.

Dude is f*cking with BASEBALL now???

Obama didn't accomplish much, but Iran, Cuba and Manning's release stand out as three of the few good things he did.

And Trump has now undone at least two of these, and Manning is back in jail.

Sad stuff.

I think this one may backfire big-time. The Great American Pasttime fans love their Central American players. They love the fact that players from other Nations are competing with the American-born players. Next thing they'll be messing with the Little League World Series.

Trump is ready to blow every Cubano in south Florida to get the Cuban-American vote. What a slut puppy!

No Castro, no problem.

1 out of 2 isn't bad.

There are very few MLB players from Central America (10) and Cuba is not in Central America.

This is just more red meat for his base. That's how Trump governs. And that's all his racist base cares about, erasing everything Obama did. Govern by revenge and spite because the country elected a Black man not once, but TWICE!!

Trump praises Putin, Kim and other dictators and totalitarian governments.. But he goes out of his way to attack Cuba and Iran? Why? Obama, that's why. I mean CUBA? Baseball? LOL

The human trafficking angle to this is a bit of a stretch when the comparison is to what was done illegally through smugglers to dealing with the Cuban government. In terms of policy with Cuba, it's clear the old methods haven't worked. This is why I felt opening the doors culturally and helping the country grow economically was a better approach to opening up their society. Cultural and economic changes are a way of bringing about political change when people benefit from the new model.

What exactly is the reason he would do something like this? Besides the obvious of "I wanna erase everything the black guy did"?

This is just patently stupid.

Stay the **** out of sports, Mr. President.

It shows you how much Trump believes racism is near and dear to the heart of his base. Nearly everything he does these days is to attack brown or black skinned people.

That's obviously Trump's opinion of his base. Does anyone know the Trump base better than Trump himself?

Or eliminate the memory of his predecessor, a black man. I've never seen such pettiness from a US President in my lifetime, and certainly never read about it in history books.

How did he become aware of this? Did Fox News run a story on it? The dude has way too much time on his hands.

Do you have a point that addresses what the poster said or my reply? The comment was about Central America, not Latin America. Did you notice that distinction before you responded?

Correction noted. Post #3 should have been "Latin American" players. I think the point of the post is valid, however. America loves it's Latin American players, and they're some of the most talented players in the game - Albert Pujols, David Ortiz, Miguel Cabrera.

And then you have the tradition, dating back to Roberto Clemente, Fernando Valenzuela, Jose Canseco, Manny Ramirez, Pudge Rodriguez, Sandy and Roberto Alomar, Pedro Martinez, Luis Tiant, Tony Perez, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal, etc, etc... Not only were many of them great players, but they were classy individuals!

Your "distinction" is best ignored......

Thank you. All those great players you listed include only 1 Cuban. Luis Tiant and he appears to have escaped Cuba before or during Castro. Not that there couldn't have been more but right behind politics is economics.

The point in your original post is that Cuban baseball players can come to the US under this "new" policy if they defect. The MLB deal apparently only dealt with those who choose not to defect.

The article mentioned the motives of the Trump Administration, as well as the previous motives of the Obama Administration. A somewhat simplistic analysis - But basically, the Trump Admin. thinks that Cuban Baseball is aligned Cuban Politics. Obama's motivations dealt with the human trafficing aspect.

...which often involved dangerous journeys at the hands of human smugglers. Players would often pay to be smuggled into a third-party country from which they could join MLB.

I would say that if you truly believe that Cuban Baseball is aligned with Cuban Politics, then OK. I think these guys just want to play the game of their passion, with the associated financial reward, just like those of other Latin American countries.
