Rome: A French cardinal convicted of covering up child sexual abuse should be presumed innocent while he appeals his case, Pope Francis said on Sunday in rare remarks about a high-profile abuse case.
"Maybe he is not innocent, but there is the presumption," Francis told reporters during a news conference on a plane ride after his two-day trip to Morocco.
Philippe Barbarin, the archbishop of Lyon and one of France's leading Catholic figures, was convicted three weeks ago, forcing Francis to make a choice over whether to accept Barbarin's resignation, which was submitted after the conviction.
In a surprise move, Francis did not accept the resignation, and Barbarin, in turn, chose to step away from his post for an unspecified period of time.
COMMENT:-
Do you suppose that someone should tell The Pope that the "presumption of innocence" is rebutted upon conviction?
Or would it just be too embarrassing to admit that The Pope is a fool?
