Trump signs executive order to promote free speech on college campuses | Fox News

"We’re here to take historic action to defend American students and American values," Trump said, surrounded by conservative student activists at the signing ceremony. "They’ve been under siege."
"Under the guise of speech codes, safe spaces and trigger warnings, these universities have tried to restrict free thought, impose total conformity and shut down the voices of great young Americans like those here today," he said.

Sad this is necessary, but it is.

CNN still mum on it, trying to figure out how to spin it. Just like the destruction of the ISIS caliphate.

I spent too many years on college campuses and, despite being very conservative fiscally and a hawk, never had any problem. I think a whole lot of people who have never been to college have wild fantasies about it.

See, Republicans are still free to support oligarchy and the wholesale slaughter of black and brown people in 3rd world countries. Hasn't stopped them then, and nothing is stopping them now. It's a bunch of noise from some loud mouthed whiners.

Who’da thunk it? Trump, a champion of free speech!

Champion of a particular type of free speech...

He does not have a problem with the restriction of free speech by states which require that contractors or their employees in their personal life do not voice support for an Israeli boycott. And such states get federal funds too...

Please elaborate on the “types” of free speech.

When conservatives have their opinions verbally challenged they go into full self-victimization mode. Someone calling them an asshole is "violating their constitutional right to free speech" and other forms of nonsensical melodrama.

I had my concerns, until I read this:

Public universities seeking funding would have to certify they comply with the First Amendment, which already applies to them.

Private universities, which have more flexibility in limiting speech, would need to commit to their own institutional rules.

That eased my mind, and I think this is a good thing - barring a partisan or poor implementation.

I very much believe all universities should strive to promote free speech, state universities unequivocally, but I do respect the rights of private entities to be free of government interference. On the surface, this order seems to satisfy both of my concerns. Kudos to Trump here, if he can get it implemented fairly & effectively!

The bill is intended to restrict funding for universities that condemn hate speech, i.e. White Supremacist language in particular.

From the referenced article:
"Even as universities have received billions and billions of dollars from taxpayers, many have become increasingly hostile to free speech and the First Amendment," Trump said.

If one doesn't care for a school's handling of expression among the student body and/or faculty, don't apply to go there. Nobody holds people at gunpoint and/or otherwise forces them on pain of "anything" to attend any specific college/university.

If one feels free speech matters that much:
1 -- Find out what the school's approach is.
2 -- Apply, or don't, as befits one's assessment of the matter.

LMAO... The left doesn't verbally challenge conservative views on college campuses, they do everything in their power to prevent those views from being expressed...

What world are you living in?

Perhaps. But the state universities can still condemn it, they just can't stop it (unless I suspect it's illegal). Which I think is fair, in light of 1stA protection.

Private universities, even if receiving public funding, seem to still be able to write their policies as they see fit - as long as they enforce them.

I think I'm fine with this. My big concern was Trump meddling in private education, but I suspect he got legal advice in his effort this time, letting him know it would be unconstitutional to meddle in private universities' policies.

I strongly doubt he got legal advice before doing this.

What exactly does this mandate colleges to do?

You misspelled 'liberals'. Your welcome.

Yeah, that's fine for private institutions. But state institutions are held to a higher order. In fact, I can't believe state schools did not have this restriction until now. The need to be open pluralistic institutions.

WHat are all the examples of a university factually violating free speech laws?
is this happening so often that an EO is needed?
if it is factually happening wheres all the won court cases against the people doing so?

and if it is factually happening i want action!

When conservatives have their opinions verbally challenged they go into full self-victimization mode..

I seriously doubt Hayden Williams was going into "self-victimization mode" when he was attacked at UC Berkeley.

I strongly doubt he got legal advice before doing this.

We've all seen his lawyers in action. I would think they gave him the thumb's up on it.

Well - it seems he's got it constitutionally right this time, and I doubt he figured it out on his own! ;)

Read campusreform.org. Plenty of examples of 1st amendment violations almost every day.

Do you have an example of anytime he's tried to squelch free speech?
He said CNN should lose their FCC license a while back, and just this week he said Saturday Night Live should be investigated. Actually, also a while back he said those expressing their 1st A rights by trampling on the flag, should be imprisoned.

So he's got quite the history, here.

and to protect private right wing universities from being exposed to left wing rallies, it appears.
