New Zealand to Ban All Semiautomatic Guns, Jacinda Ardern Announces[/h]

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Thursday announced a national ban on all military-style semiautomatic weapons, all high-capacity ammunition magazines and all parts that allow weapons to be modified into the kinds of guns used to kill 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, last week.

“What we’re banning today are the things used in last Friday’s attack,” she said, adding: “It’s about all of us, it’s in the national interest and it’s about safety.”Ms. Ardern is expected to encounter little resistance in Parliament to the weapons ban.

Ms. Ardern said her goal was to eliminate from New Zealand the weapons that the killer used in Christchurch. She emphasized that it will require a mix of regulation around both firearms and ammunition.

I knew that woman had guts. Thank God some country leaders still do! So expect tomorrow a BURST of sales in weapons here in the US because rednecks always get nervous and buy more weapons and ammo when there's a ban of any weapons anywhere. The NRA and gun shops will use their normal scare tactics and NZ propaganda on US gun lovers and do some marketing, maybe even offer discounts.

So you think it is proper when thousands of people buy something legally, never misuse it-and are then told they can no longer own it because of the actions of one nutcase? The good news is such idiocy cannot take place in this country.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be vulnerable and open to attacks so if you don't like guns. Just don't buy any.


Perhaps a good rape whistle or blow horn will serve you well.

Depends on what the gun owners are willing to do to stop it. I see lots of gun owners who are sucking from the public teat who will vote for gun banners as long as the gun banners keep that teat supplied with milk
 
a common pattern on the road to an all out ban. Next time a Ruger 10/22 (lets say) is used, they will ban semi auto sporting guns, and so it will go.

You'd hope the snowflakes would survive a violent attack and learn from the lesson. The sad thing is-many people-often poor residents of democrat run anti gun cities, don't survive a violent attack because they are unarmed. Rich liberals living in gated communities, often don't want poor people being able to protect themselves.

I bet scum bag politicians won't call for disarming cops every time a cop shoots a kid in the back or misses a scumbag and strikes an innocent bystander.

Well...there go my plans to move to New Zealand. I suppose this is fine if they also take away such guns from the police and their military forces, and somehow or other guarantee that no foreign invader will breach their shores. Somehow, I doubt that's going to happen.

Didn't take long for a thread about a ban on guns in New Zealand becoming a broadcast for the NRA did it? NZ cops don't shoot kids in the back - American cops do. NZ doesn't have anywhere near the same record as US cops.

The rest of the Western World should allow guns (within limits) but don't foist your Wild West politics and anarchic gun lifestyle on the rest of us.

If leftists actually believe in this then when can we expect them to ban alcohol and drop their fight to legalize drugs? As we both know alcohol and drugs took more lives in the time I wrote this post than in all the semi automatic rampages combined. Sure most people can handle alcohol but once in a while some drunk kills a family when he veers off the highway. To our board leftists, when is the ban happening on those?

Why would they need to take away from police and the military forces which defend the nation?

Last I checked NZ banned certain weapons in NZ.

NZ did not ban anything in the US.

Perhaps it's time for the NRA and 'libertarians' to mind their own damn business for once.
 
I can't believe they didn't even try thoughts and prayers.

Already has happened in this country, it’s called prohibition and the drug war. Luckily lawmakers got their head out of their ass on one and ended it. Reactionary bans like the one New Zealand is planning is never good.
 
This really won't change much for New Zealanders. Most gun owners in NZ own either bolt action rifles or pump-action shotguns, which wouldn't be affected under the ban.

I tend to agree. We should be concerned anyway about reactionary decisions that end up going after everyone for the actions of the few.

And as others have mentioned people tend to find ways to fulfill demand for a product even when it is illegal, and that tends to generate criminal enterprise.

We saw it with prohibition, we saw it again with this long standing war on drugs, and if more nations decide to go with these sorts of bans we can expect criminal enterprise to swoop in and handle that demand criminalizing even more of the populace. Other nations have cracked down on guns anyway, and we still have examples of people willing to harm looking to illegally purchased guns or resorting to other means to still harm people.

My issue, that I repeatedly bring up, is we are not looking at the person.

We are looking at the tools and it is becoming nonsensical to expect that someone willing to harm will all of a sudden stay home because of more restrictions on those tools.

The spirit of my tag line below says it all.
