WASHINGTON — A long-running federal investigation into a former White House counsel in the Obama administration is reaching a critical stage, presenting the Justice Department with a decision about whether to charge a prominent Democrat as part of a more aggressive crackdown on illegal foreign lobbying.

The case involving the lawyer, Gregory B. Craig, was transferred in January from federal prosecutors in New York to those in Washington. The previously undisclosed move was driven by Justice Department officials in Washington, and reflects an eagerness within the department to prosecute violations of lobbying laws after the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, focused on foreign influence in his investigations.

A decision about whether to prosecute Mr. Craig, who was White House counsel for President Barack Obama during his first year in office, is expected in the coming weeks, people familiar with the case said. The investigation centers on whether Mr. Craig should have disclosed work he did in 2012 — while he was a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom — on behalf of the Russia-aligned government of Viktor F. Yanukovych, then the president of Ukraine.

It may be silly to have to say this but in this totally partisan world we live in, here is my take on that:

Throw that democratic cheat/liar/crook into a jail cell next to Manafort if/when he is found guilty

If this guy did the crime, and so far I have little reason to doubt that, then send him to jail too because he deserves to sit there. As the judge in the Manafort trail said last week, people where promoting the then PM/leader of Ukraine, a Putin backed crook by making it look like they were just nice American companies/individuals and foreign individuals who were standing in Yanukovich's corner out of the goodness of their hearts.

Well that was just a big fat LIE

Because according to the judge these companies/individuals were on the payroll of Manafort/Gates/Yanukovich. And that is a crime, making it out like you were giving non-biased advice while harking in money to trick the US government into doing nice things for the Russian backed Ukrainian government than that is horrible.

If this democrat counsel of Obama was involved in this the house/senate needs to demand Obama come to the congress/senate to testify about Gregory Craig and whether he was involved in decision making regarding Ukraine. This must be cleared and if any of what he is accused of, than Craig needs to join Manafort in jail, because that is then where he belongs.

IMHO, the Mueller SC gains more credibility in pursuing charges against a Democratic operative.

But it's not part of his mandate, and there's no reason at all for a SC to handle this. Seems like Trump's DoJ is capable of making the decision to prosecute a former Democratic official in the Obama WH.

Mueller also handed off the other two related cases - Vin Weber and Tony Podesta - to SDNY. Seems like the right call.

Right, but the point is they found crimes committed by a Democrat, and recommended possible criminal charges.

The guy is a Democrat. He was obviously set up.

I don't care if he's a Democrat, the Democratic Party is better off without him if he's guilty.
This.

We don't think like conservatives. When we find corruption in our ranks, we call it out and root for them to be held accountable when they are caught breaking serious laws.

They wont do squat to him. He’s a Clinton crony and will probably have Lanny Davis as his attorney to make sure he doesn’t say the wrong thing. Probably five days standing in the corner.

Nope.

Literally nobody on the left is saying this. You seem to have your own train of thought mixed-up with ours.

Is projection your only skill?

Same here. It's not too much, in this case, for a former WH counsel to follow the damn LAW when it comes to foreign lobbying. If he's tried and found guilty, he can look in the mirror for whom to blame. And IMO it would be a good thing if these guys who serve time in government then become hired guns for anyone with a big checkbook are running scared for a few years and diligently do their duty under the law and simply DISCLOSE what they are doing.

A bit unrelated, but we should also crack down on using offshore banking to hide income, which is what really got Manafort in big trouble. If I had to bet, there are a lot of famous names who'd get caught up in a real crackdown, and I'd cheer every name.

Well, you know, I am not so sure. I am actually enjoying him acting as the so-called Witchhunter General and helping put these disgusting parasitical criminals behind bars. Perhaps he could be called upon to have his mandate expanded to question every sitting congressman and woman, every appointed member of the executive branch, every lobbying firm, and every member of our country's nomenklatura for possible criminal activity, improper lobbying practices, bribery, money laundering and other forms of corruption. We might have eight or nine clean members of government by the time it's all through. More than enough to start over.

That would be too bad. You should write Trump a letter and tell Trump to order his appointees do their damn job.

Actually I'd agree with that. I'm sure a big reason why so many white collar criminals go decades and never get caught is if, say, Democrats start really cracking down on these assholes, the efforts will inevitably root out corrupt but influential Democratic donors. So, sure, I'd love it if Trump or, say, Warren establishes an independent SC to go after these guys with a staff of about 100 or so for starters, with the sole purpose cracking down on the kind fo thing Manafort did pretty blatantly.

I suspect you're being sarcastic, but I'm responding as if you aren't.

Party affiliation is not a barrier to corruption or criminal behavior.
