(CNN)Bernie Sanders advocated for the nationalization of most major industries, including energy companies, factories, and banks, when he was a leading member of a self-described "radical political party" in the 1970s, a CNN KFile review of his record reveals.Sanders' past views shed light on a formative period of his political career that could become relevant as he advances in the 2020 Democratic primary.

Many of the positions he held at the time are more extreme compared to the more tempered democratic socialism the Vermont senator espouses today and could provide fodder for moderate Democrats and Republicans looking to cast the Democratic presidential candidate and his beliefs as a fringe form of socialism that would be harmful to the country.

Bernie, and the gaggle of Democrat Socialists are going to run into real problems when Democrat friendly news outlets like CNN are actively fighting against their message of Socialism....

Got anything more recent?...40 years ago...LOL

What's relevant is what policies he's advocating now. I have not heard him talk about nationalizing major industries recently, but if he does, it's not one I would support. I support a free market, but one where government protects the interests of the public.

Cable news outlets are already fighting against Bernie. I think that digging through some of Bernie's old positions could hurt him with independents. Social democracy isn't scary to a lot of people that are left of the GOP, but he definitely was more socialist a few decades ago.

In terms of messaging I think the real win is talking about social programs as they relate to helping low/middle class folks with the major expenses (healthcare/education). Those ideas resonate with many since plenty of Americans struggle with the costs of these basic necessities. If this becomes an ideological battle between capitalism vs socialism then those issues get lost in the mix.

I was speaking more to how his past could be used against him. Bernie's messaging has always been his strong suit, but people will easily find some of the more radical positions he has had in the past. I hope that we get Bernie vs Trump because I think we need to have that fight. Bernie's brand of social democracy vs Trump's brand of crony capitalism.

Just posting a CNN article...Besides that is the model that Socialist Progressives love in elections....What? You don't like it when it's done to your boy?

You haven't? So you don't consider Health Care, College, or the Energy sector "major industries"?

I think that's what 2016's fight was really meant to be. People wanted a shift from establishment politicians.

When government gets involved, it's no longer a free market.

Bernie couldn't even hold a steady job until he found out that politics didn't require much effort other than his mouth.

He's another POS loser who sucked off his parents and friends while telling everyone how "the man" was keeping everyone down.

Care for a more substantive response?

I am just shocked that someone of your caliber doesn't admit that 'Medicare for all', Free college tuition, taking over the energy sector (as in the GND) are examples of nationalizing industry.... I would think that is elementary...

They're not Democrat friendly, they're corporate and wealthy friendly. They along with the NYT trashed Bernie last time, and they're doing it again this time. They're also doing it to Beto which makes me like him more because it must mean he's a good guy.

You think that socialists and progressives rely on CNN for their news?

You POOR thing, have you been reading fake news again? It's really unfair what these people are doing to the most susceptible among us.

Professional history
After graduating from college, Sanders returned to New York City, where he initially worked at a variety of jobs, including Head Start teacher, psychiatric aide, and carpenter.[31] In 1968, Sanders moved to Vermont because he had been "captivated by rural life." After his arrival there he worked as a carpenter,[33] filmmaker, and writer[48] who created and sold "radical film strips" and other educational materials to schools.[49] He also wrote several articles for the alternative publication The Vermont Freeman.[50]

Liberty Union campaigns
Sanders began his electoral political career in 1971 as a member of the Liberty Union Party, which originated in the anti-war movement and the People's Party. He ran as the Liberty Union candidate for governor of Vermont in 1972 and 1976 and as a candidate for U.S. senator in 1972 and 1974.[51] In the 1974 senatorial race, Sanders finished third (5,901 votes; 4%), behind 33-year-old Chittenden County State's Attorney Patrick Leahy (D, VI; 70,629 votes; 49%) and two-term incumbent U.S. Representative Dick Mallary (R; 66,223 votes; 46%).[52][53]

The 1976 campaign proved to be the zenith of Liberty Union's influence, with Sanders collecting 11,000 votes for governor and the party. This forced the races for lieutenant governor and secretary of state to be decided by the state legislature when its vote total prevented either the Republican or Democratic candidates for those offices from garnering a majority of votes.[54] The campaign drained the finances and energy of the Liberty Union, however, and in October 1977, less than a year after the conclusion of the 1976 campaign, Sanders and the Liberty Union candidate for attorney general, Nancy Kaufman, announced their retirement from the party.[54]

Following his resignation from the Liberty Union Party in 1977, Sanders worked as a writer and the director of the nonprofit American People's Historical Society (APHS).[55] While with the APHS, he made a 30-minute documentary about American Socialist leader and presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs.[33][56]

Mayor of Burlington

Burlington, Vermont City Hall, where Sanders was mayor for eight years
In 1980, Sanders ran for mayor of Burlington, Vermont (pop. 38,000), at the suggestion of his close friend and political confidante Richard Sugarman, a professor of religion at the University of Vermont. He was mayor for eight years, from April 6, 1981, to April 4, 1989.[57]

1. Medicare for all doesn't nationalize the private sector insurance companies or the drug companies.

2. His stance on college tuition doesn't nationalize education as a whole. He's advocating for college tuition at public colleges and universities to be "free". I'm not a fan of the term "free" because it isn't free at all; we're just pooling money through our taxes to fund education for people. Private sector college/universities will continue to exist.

3. As for energy, the proposal moves toward alternative energy and not "taking over the energy sector" in the form of government managing the entire sector. It definitely seeks to shift to the forms of energy used, and I think it needs to be more gradual than what they're proposing.
