People of all ages are taking part in today's global climate strike in over 100 countries.

From Australia to America, children put down their books on Friday to march for change in the first global climate strike.

The event was embraced in the developing nations of India and Uganda and in the Philippines and Nepal – countries acutely impacted by climate change - as tens of thousands of schoolchildren and students in more than 100 countries went on “strike”, demanding the political elite urgently address what they say is a climate emergency.

In Sydney, where about 30,000 children and young people marched from the Town Hall Square to Hyde Park, university student Xander De Vries, 20, said: “It’s our time to rise up. We don’t have a lot of time left; it’s us who have to make a change so I thought it would be important to be here and show support to our generation.”

When I was in school I'd have protested free ice cream if it meant a day out of class.

I'll say the same thing I said the last time you posted something like this:

Adults using children as proxies for their political agendas is always distasteful at best.

When I was in school I'd have protested free ice cream if it meant a day out of class.
It is a good thing the information age has allowed young people to protest something meaningful then.

I don't blame them. They and their kids are going to be around a lot longer than many of us on this political forum ...

You could listen to the kids instead of spreading conspiracy theories.

"These strikes are happening today – from Washington DC to Moscow, Tromsø to Invercargill, Beirut to Jerusalem, and Shanghai to Mumbai – because politicians have failed us. We’ve seen years of negotiations, pathetic deals on climate change, fossil fuel companies being given free rein to carve open our lands, drill beneath our soils and burn away our futures for their profit. We’ve seen fracking, deep sea drilling and coalmining continue. Politicians have known the truth about climate change and they’ve willingly handed over our future to profiteers whose search for quick cash threatens our very existence.

This movement had to happen, we didn’t have a choice. Last year’s UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s special report on global warming could not have been clearer about the extreme dangers of going beyond 1.5C of global warming. To have any chance of avoiding that extreme danger emissions must drop rapidly – so that by the time we will be in our mid- and late-20s we are living in a transformed world.

The students who are striking in cities, towns and villages around the world are uniting behind the science. We are only asking that our leaders to do the same.

If those in power today don’t act, it will be our generation who will live through their failure. Those who are under 20 now could be around to see 2080, and face the prospect of a world that has warmed by up to 4C. The effects of such warming would be utterly devastating. Rivers would flood, storms would wreak havoc on coastal communities and coral reefs would be eliminated. Melting polar ice caps would lead to dramatically higher sea levels, flooding coastal areas. Places on Earth will become uninhabitable."

I think Lutherf's point was that there's no indication this was 'meaningful' to most of the students vs an excuse to get out of class.

I dont get it. What exactly is it that they want adults to do?

It's not a conspiracy theory. Adults use kids to further their own political agendas all the time. This is no exception.

Even the language used in your quote isn't that of kids. It's language that was written for them by adults, with all the buzzwords used by adults.

No doubt about it.

We need to abandon reason and follow the children over the cliff.

I dont get it. What exactly is it that they want adults to do?

Wave our magic wands and give them everything we didn't have without any consequences.

Not all the words had to be written by adults. The London children who chanted "Theresa May f...ing whore" were quite capable of devising this catchy slogan for themselves, such is the enabling power British child-centered education.

These idiot kids don't know anything more than they want a better environment. Next protests up, they will be demanding world peace. The young have always been stupid.

The kids aren't saying anything meaningful. They don't know their asses from a hole in the ground. They might as well be taking time out of classes to protest wanting world peace. The kids don't know anything more than a meaningless empty slogan that sounds good.

1.4 million people in 123 countries particapated in yesterdays school strikes and climate events.

And there was a million woman pro-abortion rally against Trump and the Republicans in DC two years ago. How'd that work out? We have two more conservative judges on the Supreme Court and many states are passing stricter abortion regulations and there are many more conservative judges appointed for life in federal courts. Idiot kids and the idiot left protest just to protest because it makes them feel good.

I dont get it. What exactly is it that they want adults to do?

That's just it. It is a bunch of empty nonsense. They'd have much better luck demanding free ice cream.

I remember when I was that age and knew it all.

Yup. A lot of things happening today remind me so much of when I grew up in the 60's. Oh how much kids can be oh so stupid. Bring on the marijuana. Bring on the other drugs. Let's get out of Vietnam. Let's all have relentless sex and orgies as their are no consequences from it. The police are pigs. Let's go after the rich! Peace man! Let's all love each other. Coexist! Raise the minimum wage because that extra 25 cent raise is going to bring me out of poverty.

António Guterres is secretary general of the United Nations have now written this letter there he propose a climate action summit.

“That is why I am bringing world leaders together at a climate action summit later this year. I am calling on all leaders to come to New York in September with concrete, realistic plans to enhance their nationally determined contributions by 2020, in line with reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% over the next decade, and to net zero by 2050.

The summit will bring together governments, the private sector, civil society, local authorities and other international organisations to develop ambitious solutions in six areas: renewable energy; emission reductions; sustainable infrastructure; sustainable agriculture and management of forests and oceans; withstanding climate impacts; and investing in the green economy.

The latest analysis shows that if we act now, we can reduce carbon emissions within 12 years and limit global warming to 1.5C. But if we continue along our current path, the consequences are impossible to predict.”

The climate strikers should inspire us all to act at the next UN summit | Antonio Guterres | Opinion | The Guardian

While even Trump’s Energy Secretary ,Rick Perry have said this.

“Perry told reporters at the CERAWeek by IHS Markit energy industry conference in Houston that he’d be open to meeting with Ocasio-Cortez to discuss ways to reduce emissions.

“I don't think the representative should be castigated or pushed aside just on the face of her comments relative that she wants to live in place with clean air and water,” Perry said. “So do I.”

He later suggested a blanket rejection of the Green New Deal would be counterproductive to the goal of addressing climate change, which he shares.”

Rick Perry: AOC should not be 'castigated' for Green New Deal

Also having countries, communinities, corporation and individuals leading the way in investing in renewables have drastically reduced the cost of renewables. So that even Republicans are on a local level starting to see the benefits of renewable energy.

When I was in school I'd have protested free ice cream if it meant a day out of class.

Addressing the causes of global warming = "free ice cream."

Okay.

That's just it. It is a bunch of empty nonsense. They'd have much better luck demanding free ice cream.

OMG, free ice cream? I may not be a kid, but I sure as hell will support their rally if I can get some of it myself!

You for example have UK that have drastically reduced it's coal consumption and will close its last coal plant in 2025.

Also Sweden that implemented a carbon tax as early as 1995 and is one of the world's most sustainable countries,.

And Denmark got 43 percent of their electricity from wind power in 2017 and also plan to meet 50 percent of all their energy needs with renewable energy by 2030.

Denmark on track to have 50% renewable energy by 2030

There those countries also have less than half the C02 pollution per capita of US.

While at the same time rank high on the best country for business list.

Also for example that over 150 of the world’s most influential companies have committed to source 100 percent renewable electricity. While the price of renewables have dropped so much that even oil companies invests in renewable energy.
