Senate rejects Trump border emergency as Republicans defect

Keep polling up and down Haight-Ashbury and Castro. It's working so well for you.

You're the one who made the claim that the "majority of the country" supports Trump on the emergency declaration. If you're rejecting polls, then what is the basis for your claim?

Keep polling up and down Haight-Ashbury and Castro. It's working so well for you.

So what did you base your assertion on, if not a poll? Anything?

So then it's incumbent upon you to prove your claim that the majority of the country supported Trump's declaration of a fake emergency for a wall he promised you that Mexico would pay for. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm breathlessly awaiting your proof that isn't based on polls.

8 more is all they need in the Senate, and there are two that are already regretting not voting for the resolution. The House, though, is a harder haul, as they need 30 more. Is or possible? Yes, though not likely. I've had a chance to communicate with at least one Soldier on the border (deliberately being non-specific) who described the ridiculousness of their task. There were not enough areas to string concertina wire, so the ended up restringing the same length of fence...SIX TIMES. Yeah, that's a thoughtful use of resources.

This bill passed in the House of Representatives first, in February. Bills always start in the House before moving into the Senate for a final vote. The Democratic House majority passed it easily.

The majority of the country supports Trump on this. He'll benefit from this greatly.

If he had popular support like that, he would have got his wall funding the last go round, as his hoards of supporters descended on their reps.

Trump's people power is overstated, especially on this issue. I blame the vague polling, where everyone supports "improved border security" but that's significantly different from "give Trump his wall."

I am surprised that there were 12 defections from the GOP!

PS Glad to to see that a recent Senate vote totals 100 votes, been a while since I remember seeing the full Senate chime in.

Same here.

I didn't think 12 conservatives had the spine to do the right thing, and take a stand against the moronic Racist in Chief.

Next move is D.T. will veto it and it will go to court on the grounds that Congress holds the purse strings and can't abdicate a constitutional power to the Executive.

Based on that argument, they'll lose.

Anyone have a list of the 12? I can't find an article that lists all of them and the vote's not up on the Senate website yet.

Here ya go
These 12 GOP senators voted against Trump's national emergency declaration - CNNPolitics
Sen. Roger Wicker (Mississippi)

The Conservative Treehouse???

I view it as 12 RINO's lacked the spine to support their President. I will give the dems credit for one thing, no matter how rotten their officials are they stand behind them to keep their party intact.

That's not the way government works. There are three branches for a reason.

Outside that, two surprises for me: Paul voted yes and Sasse voted no. That's a strike for you Mr. Sasse.

He was talking about a veto vote.

Just breaking.

WASHINGTON — The Republican-run Senate rejected President Donald Trump's declaration of a national emergency at the southwest border on Thursday, setting up a veto fight and dealing him a conspicuous rebuke as he tested how boldly he could ignore Congress in pursuit of his highest-profile goal.

The Senate voted 59-41 to cancel Trump's February proclamation of a border emergency, which he invoked to spend $3.6 billion more for border barriers than Congress had approved. Twelve Republicans joined Democrats in defying Trump in a showdown many GOP senators had hoped to avoid because he commands die-hard loyalty from millions of conservative voters who could punish defecting lawmakers in next year's elections.

Senate rejects Trump border emergency as Republicans defect

I am not the least bit surprised. Are you?

Actually I am surprised that 12 Republicans voted for this. That is a huge number. I figured it would be a half dozen.

Any in California I could vote for? Because balls like that should be rewarded. (Assuming they aren't complete cockholsters on everything else.)

President Trump's problem always has been bitter malcontent Republicans in Congress who believe no one but themselves or other career politicians should be allowed to become president.

Short of a veto-proof majority, so this won't be final, but it does at least send a clear message to tRump.

Do you really think he cares about some message, his focus is border security and his message back will be a vetoed bill.

This sends a clear message to 12 Republicans who won't be reelected

There is also a difference between voting on a measure and voting to override a veto. The votes might well be there. It's not like it's a vague situation. Emergency powers are there when an act of congress will take too long. Congress considered, debated, polled, negotiated, and voted. There is absolutely no call for emergency powers here. It crosses separation of powers in a very bad way.

Voting on a measure saying it's just not okay brought over 12 votes. How many will think, "I might have okayed it, but we just told you no again and you tried to overrule us." I like to think even the republican party can find a few more votes of reason here.

Interesting that both Houses of Congress just voted that THEY passed unconstitutional legislation granting the President Emergency power - something they apparently didn't realize with President Obama and President Bush used it.

So, should everyone in Congress who voted for the Emergency Powers Act be impeached and removed for defying the US Constitution when they passed that law?

And how many of these idiots have seen what's been going on at the border lately?

Irrelevant. A serious problem =/= a national emergency.
