WASHINGTON — The Republican-run Senate rejected President Donald Trump's declaration of a national emergency at the southwest border on Thursday, setting up a veto fight and dealing him a conspicuous rebuke as he tested how boldly he could ignore Congress in pursuit of his highest-profile goal.

The Senate voted 59-41 to cancel Trump's February proclamation of a border emergency, which he invoked to spend $3.6 billion more for border barriers than Congress had approved. Twelve Republicans joined Democrats in defying Trump in a showdown many GOP senators had hoped to avoid because he commands die-hard loyalty from millions of conservative voters who could punish defecting lawmakers in next year's elections.

I am not the least bit surprised. Are you?

Actually I am surprised that 12 Republicans voted for this. That is a huge number. I figured it would be a half dozen.

I am surprised that there were 12 defections from the GOP!

PS Glad to to see that a recent Senate vote totals 100 votes, been a while since I remember seeing the full Senate chime in.

Next move is D.T. will veto it and it will go to court on the grounds that Congress holds the purse strings and can't abdicate a constitutional power to the Executive.

Short of a veto-proof majority, so this won't be final, but it does at least send a clear message to tRump.

Ayep. This will be held up the courts forever.

Trump Fan Nation will be screaming about those 12 RINOs any second now.

As they should, most people can see beyond the cult of Trump. The Trumpers of today are very unwise to not see that in 2 short years the Democrats may very well control the levers of power again. And if Democrats had their own version of Trump, a conspiracy theorist, wannabe king, Republicans would be calling for impeachment, some even secession!

I'd like to say "This precedent is a grave concern for our country." even if those words are cliche. The precedent is there, whether or not you believe it's a grave concern is up to you. But, it will be an elephant in the room, whenever a Democrats wants to bypass Congress to fund Extra milk and Eggs for single mothers, because "the base wants it."

With 59 votes against, I imagine there's a little bit of fretting going on in the White House about a possible veto override. The last thing any President wants to do, but especially one as concerned with vanity as this one, is to have a veto overridden, but especially with his party in the majority.

I don't know if they could get to the magic number to override, but I bet there will be a lot of work being done behind the scenes.

Trump hasn’t done “messages” very well.

Anyone have a list of the 12? I can't find an article that lists all of them and the vote's not up on the Senate website yet.

Completely agree with everything you said here.

The Republicans, as it turns out, aren't as completely stupid as the election of Trump made them out to be. I mean, some obviously are. But at least 12 aren't.

Thank you. Surprised to see Wicker and Blunt on there. And surprised Tillis reversed himself after writing a pretty strongly worded op ed detailing why it the emergency declaration was unconstitutional.

Edit: And very surprised to see Gardner and McSally not on there despite being up in difficult seats next year.

I was just in Lamar Alexander's DC office two weeks ago. I must have rubbed off on him.

8 more is all they need in the Senate, and there are two that are already regretting not voting for the resolution. The House, though, is a harder haul, as they need 30 more. Is or possible? Yes, though not likely. I've had a chance to communicate with at least one Soldier on the border (deliberately being non-specific) who described the ridiculousness of their task. There were not enough areas to string concertina wire, so the ended up restringing the same length of fence...SIX TIMES. Yeah, that's a thoughtful use of resources.

The outcome was a given but am somewhat surprised at the numbers.

hamberder!!!

The majority of the country supports Trump on this. He'll benefit from this greatly.

No, they don't. And no, he won't.

The majority of the country supports Trump on this. He'll benefit from this greatly.

The numbers I've seen are 52% of voters oppose Trump on this. Even if all remaining 48% supported him, (they don't) it still wound't be a majority.

I was surprised about Tillis too, given what he said. I wonder what changed his mind.

I read yesterday that Trump called Lee to try to sway him. It obviously didn't work.

Yes because nothing screams "win" more than 12 members of your own party saying "You can't declare a national emergency that doesn't exist because you promised your supporters a wall that you said Mexico would pay for".

Keep polling up and down Haight-Ashbury and Castro. It's working so well for you.

Good to know that there's at least 12 out of 51 Republicans that still have their souls and aren't willing to forego their Congressional obligation for a man that is power thirsty and will take every bit of power away from Congress if given half a chance.
