Jussie Smollett pleads not guilty to charges that he staged a hoax - CNN

Actor Jussie Smollett pleaded not guilty in court Thursday to accusations that he staged a hate crime and filed a false police report. The "Empire" actor, 36, was arraigned before Judge Steven Gregory Watkins, and his attorney entered the formal not guilty plea on his behalf. Watkins agreed to allow Smollett to travel to California and New York to meet with his lawyers and set his next hearing for April 17.
Gloria Schmidt, the attorney for the brothers allegedly involved in the incident, was also seated in the courtroom.
Smollett also was in court Tuesday for a hearing to determine whether a judge should allow cameras in court. His legal team said it welcomed cameras due to what it described as "misinformation" leaked to the media since Smollett reported being attacked in January.
"There has been a lot of misinformation in this case that has been presented as fact and evidence against Mr. Smollett, which is demonstrably false," said Tina Glandian, the attorney for the actor:
"We welcome cameras in the courtroom so that the public and the media can see the actual evidence and what we believe is actually going to be the lack of evidence against Mr. Smollett. And we look forward to complete transparency and the truth coming out."

LOL this idiot is actually gonna fight the charges. I hope he goes in for a long time.

The very little bit I've heard about this incident, it seems very likely he staged the event. And I very highly doubt they would charge him for it without good evidence. If he beats these charges I'll be shocked.

You never know ... people in "high places" are working on his behalf ...

"... After being contacted by a Chicago attorney who served as former first lady Michelle Obama’s chief of staff, the top prosecutor in Cook County asked the city’s top cop to turn over the Jussie Smollett probe to the FBI, according to reports. ..."

Former Michelle Obama aide intervened in Jussie Smollett case

That Chicago attorney is also a close friend of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s wife ...

It would be better for Smollett to plead guilty and try to salvage at least some reputation.
People, and I would imagine his fans, are more sympathetic to someone who gets real, showing remorse for their wrongdoings.

Instead, this conceited, entitled, fake is going to plead guilty to crimes he cannot beat.
Nobody likes a liar. Stick a fork in him, he's done.

Well, isn't that just perfect... Reads like an Onion headline. ;)

That POS is hoping for help from the liberal black community, and some of them might just do him the favour only because they don't want to look like idiots when they repeated his lies.

As it stands, an investigation of the Chicago police department has been started a few days ago with regard to "leaking info" about the Smollett case.
Throw a lot of heavy-duty rocks at the one who accused you and you might just be lucky to where your case will be thrown out of court ... because of a "technicality".

(spit)

This Smollet guy is either lying (again) or he believes his own lies. I don't buy the whole "addicted to drugs" plea. It's such a weak argument and this guy knew exactly what he was doing at the time. And the Left was REALLY hoping this would lead to something bigger. Instead, they have either lying scumbag or a delusional soul (one or the other) who conjured up a staged attack on himself. Bravo! You chose poorly.

I never heard of the guy before all this happened, and I look forward to the day I no longer have to hear about him. I hope they throw the book at him. The guy is an asshole.

Yeah I never heard of him before either. Ive heard of Empire, but never watched it.

As far as him pleading not guilty- unless his defense can somehow prove that those two Nigerians he hired werent the ones who "attacked" him, I doubt he will win.

Lots of people plead not guilty. In fact I would venture to guess on serious charges or high profile cases, most probably do. His plea means nothing if the law enforcement has the goods on him, and it sure sounds like they do.

Yup, you're always supposed to plead not guilty at first. Once you get to a certain stage your lawyer negotiates a plea bargain and you plead to that.

This is pretty damning from the Prosecutor. Of course the defense will
have their turn to counter this in trial.

Actually, a Not Guilty plea at arraignment is entirely appropriate. You've got a right to defend yourself so you may as well take advantage of that right.

It seems more than that to me though. His lawyers are actively saying that the police are lying- and theyre appearing in all the news shows.

That's a defense. Let them give it a shot.

Personally, I don't think it's going to be a very effective defense and it's probably going to just earn him more ridicule but it's his right to put up a defense and that's what he should do.
