Federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into data deals Facebook struck with some of the world’s largest technology companies, intensifying scrutiny of the social media giant’s business practices as it seeks to rebound from a year of scandal and setbacks.

A grand jury in New York has subpoenaed records from at least two prominent makers of smartphones and other devices, according to two people who were familiar with the requests and who insisted on anonymity to discuss confidential legal matters. Both companies had entered into partnerships with Facebook, gaining broad access to the personal information of hundreds of millions of its users.

I participate on Facebook knowing it's one giant data-accumulation ****-show, and act accordingly. Anybody who writes anything on Facebook or on any of their other platforms that they want to be private are in for a rude awakening.

Where it gets simply unfair is with the apps that aren't known to be owned by Facebook.

In any case, I hope FB gets its ass nailed to the wall. It's such an unapologetically evil company.

I have an account but don't use my real name or any identifiable information. Anything I post, I post knowing that it could be used by a third party. There is zero privacy there.

Has anyone noticed that, over the years, we have basically transitioned all of our important communications - news media, personal contacts, private messages, information of all kinds - to private corporations? That's really what social media has done. I know people who won't even communicate by e-mail anymore, they do everything on Facebook. (It's the reason I have an account, so I can get in touch with these people.) Even our President "tweets" his updates now.

How can the First Amendment really function properly in a private environment???

Zucky lied to Congress and got away with it because he wasn't under oath. Finally someone's going to nail his ass to a wall.

I stated here on DP that I disagreed with Fake Indian's idea of breaking Facebook up, but suggested that they (as well as Google) get put on a leash in regards to data privacy.

All data collection. But they (Congress ? will make feeble steps if anything at all. Lots of money at stake, any company of size mines your data, and shares/sells it.

Well Big Bus, data mining is to make money. FB is a perfect example, Amazon in some ways another another. Throw in Google, MS and a host of others.
The invasion of ones life is immense. An open human market and what one can do with all that info.

Many people are angry these tech companies like Google and Facebook are collecting our information but let's not forget, government has been collecting our information forever.

I trust tech companies more than I do the government. Tech companies like FB and Google have a history of making a profit. The government does not.

You trust the same government that will try to throw you in jail if they think you committed a crime. Ya, no thank you. Given the countless of people in prison for smoking a joint, I will never trust the government.

One thing people forget about FB is how many small businesses that have thrived because of their ad platform. It is so easy to buy and post advertisements on Facebook.

If you are a small business, the options before FB were not great - Posting flyers on cars or in the street, radio ads? Tv? costly and ineffective. FB ads are very easy and you can target your audience.

FB is for the little people. Don't be brainwashed by the media.

Just curious, what are some examples they can do? I ask because I don't do social media, I have a facebook account that I waste time with, catch up with old friends that's about it.....the rest, twitter,instagram,snapchat, whatever is out there now, don't deal with it etc....

I have seen small businesses grow their profits through facebook. They are getting a pretty good cut when they can post ads on people's wall

I worked in the computer business for over 30 years. And because I did I never once got on FB or Twitter or any of them..

Anyone who does should not be surprised if their lives are ripped apart. Obviously that won't happen to everyone. But if you are on them your chances are much higher.

They are dangerous.

Generally speaking, I assumed awhile ago that stuff I say online is never sure to be private.

The nature of the systems involved makes it so.

Only your own thoughts are private, currently.

Heh heh, getting WHAT right? The fact that I think Trump is a crook, the fact that I take care of a disabled wife and kid, the fact that I like MoPar muscle cars and Leon Russell? The fact that I own some camera equipment and some lights?
Whoop-dee do, they're welcome to it, but "they" still think I lived in Ohio, they still think I was once married to a lady named Junie, they still think I played clarinet in a Klezmer music trio in New York City and they still think I am distantly related to a guy who owns a car stereo store in Culver City California...none of which is true.

So, I am not all that sure what they're getting right but the above is just the tip of the iceberg on what they've been getting wrong for the last twenty years, and up until about a year and a half ago, I used to post to FB a LOT.

They don't even have my age right.

IMDB has more accurate information about me than anything else and they've got a lot of that wrong, too.

It's the nature of the technology - it is literally impossible to be 100% secure, especially when humans are involved.

Nobody forced you to login to facebook. You didn't pay for anything. You signed the user agreement.

I use it largely for marketing, so it's kind of expected that everything I do there is going to be public. One thing everybody in my line of work learned shortly after 2016 was that posting political opinions was a super awesome way of alienating people and causing strife on a page that's supposed to be for marketing your work. But that's about as bad as it got.

Thanks for telling me my responsibilities and liabilities. I already knew them. I'm not sure why you're being so antagonistic... do you not think it's a problem that so much of our day-to-day communication is going through these private entities, and that they may be engaged in suspicious activities?
