New York prosecutors Wednesday announced the indictment of President Donald Trump’s former campaign chief, Paul Manafort, only minutes after his sentencing in a federal case.

The 16 charges unveiled by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance relate to mortgage fraud, conspiracy and falsifying business records.
“No one is beyond the law in New York,” Vance said in a statement. Manafort’s alleged actions “strike at the heart of New York’s sovereign interests, including the integrity of our residential mortgage market,” Vance added.
Crucially, Trump does not have pardon power for state charges. Trump has not explicitly ruled out pardoning his former campaign official. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday the president would decide whether to pardon Manafort “when he’s ready.”

Wow! That didn't take long. For Mr. Manafort, it appears that "when it rains, it pours", would very much apply.

Most of it I don't think will run into double jeopardy, in particular the charges of mortgage fraud and falsifying of state documents, which can easily carry 5-10 years.

What most people worried about a pardon are missing is this: Manafort's word doesn't matter any more to prosecutors. So, he can't damage Trump unless he has physical evidence of a crime. That means Trump is free to let him stay in jail and count the days, and so don't be surprised if he does that.

Remember, impeachment is 65% political, and pardoning Manafort would hurt Trump's political standing.

I was wondering why NY hadn't closed its double jeopardy loophole. As it turns out, they didn't have to.

But I'm feeling a little stupid: why is Manafort no longer important with regards to Trump himself?

The new state charges against Mr. Manafort are contained in a 16-count indictment that alleges a yearlong scheme in which he falsified business records to obtain millions of dollars in loans, Mr. Vance said in a news release after the federal sentencing.

“No one is beyond the law in New York,” he said, adding that the investigation by the prosecutors in his office had “yielded serious criminal charges for which the defendant has not been held accountable.”

The indictment grew out of an investigation that began in 2017, when the Manhattan prosecutors began examining loans Mr. Manafort received from two banks.

Last week, a grand jury hearing evidence in the case voted to charge Mr. Manafort with residential mortgage fraud, conspiracy, falsifying business records and other charges. A lawyer for Mr. Manafort could not immediately be reached for comment.

Gee, who does that sound like?

With Trump talking about a pardon, it is time for the states to send him to prison.

No prosecutor is going to bank on Manafort's testimony for jack, not at this point. When he lied in his interviews, that shot any chance he'd ever have in ever being used against Trump and his family, and Mueller knew that, which is why his team were so royally pissed in that sentencing memo.

He can't be used against Trump, so the latter has no need to pardon the former.

Trump better get an umbrella too.

Yep.

The best and fastest way to drain the swamp is to investigate Trump's criminal associates. He sure has a lot of them.

Hard to believe so many were gullible enough to believe Trump would "drain the swamp" with his record of corruption and sleaze.

Yep. Pardoning Manafort might help excite the radical sect of his base, but it won't win him the Indies he needs for re-election. And if he loses re-election, he then is immediately exposed to all sorts of possible criminal prosecution.

In my opinion, today's immediately filed NY State charges are as much a warning to Trump (and those that have dirt on Trump), as to Manafort.

The book on swamp drainage for anti-Trump DOJ members of BO's administration and members of the FBI is far from being closed. How high will that number amount to? Time will tell and Page is the latest salvo.

a lot of witches

Manafort deserves it, but I am thinking that the new indictments may be an unconstitutional double jeopardy.

I know NY was working on overturning their double jeopardy law. Did they actually do it?

Yep. That was a warning to Trump, and especially those that have dirt on Trump - and need to come-in from the cold.

The more they make it look like a political witch hunt, the easier it will be to overturn any convictions.

The NY charges against Manafort don't appear to be the same as those seen in the Federal indictments against him.

Not one person charged with "collusion". Just process crimes and **** that happened before the Trump Campaign existed.

LOL

Trump would be in jail today too if he were not president.

It's a virtual smorgasbord of charges we have to choose from.

We may not be able to "catch him" in reference to Russia but we all know he's compromised by Putin.
