Paul Manafort to learn sentence on tax, bank fraud charges — live updates

The judge was right to do so, Trump's alleged collusion with Russia was irrelevant to Manafort's failure to register as a foreign agent for the government of Ukraine, his failure to properly report any income derived thereby and whatever financial misrepresentations inflating or deflating his net worth.

The absence of collusion evidence is problematic, but Mueller is supposed to prosecute any crimes he uncovers as he investigates the collusion. I wonder whether a defendant could suppress evidence of crimes uncovered after Mueller determined there is no evidence of collusion.

So why the radical difference in the guideline sentencing and the actual sentencing?

Only to the delusional world of the Trumpkins.

You give yourself away every time you use the tern "trumpkins", obviously intended as a slur. In effect, you are suggesting that roughly half the American voters are delusional morons. I would think that someone who claims to have taught American Government at a University and wants to appear intellectual would not go so low brow.

Trumpkins is merely an accurate descriptor.

Manafort’s age, no prior convictions, and probably his anticipated further sentencing this week.

LOL, that's pretty funny! I assume it was a joke, right?
Yes, but since an assault is the intentional causing of an apprehension of an imminent unwanted contact, given that Manafort knew he was the target of Mueller’s investigating, if he saw about 17 FBI vehicles of any description converge on his dwelling those would all be “assault” vehicles.

Thankfully Mueller turned this ‘bust’ into a a full-on CNN production, camera crews set up and illuminated the scene, and then they broadcast the show, we’ve all seen the arrest. There were night-scoped helmeted FBI agents in bulletproof vests wearing fatigues and boots running around, and I distinctly saw an APC at the entrance of the Manafort residence. I think an APC (armored personnel carrier) qualifies as an “assault vehicle”, but this could depend on how armed. An APC is big and bulky, stands high above the ground, it would be intimidating to have one of them driving towards one’s house, easily induce that apprehension of unwanted contact.

I don't have any idea why they brought so many people there, but I don't care even a little bit. He wasn't harmed, his wife wasn't harmed, they had a big crew there to 1) prevent him from destroying evidence and 2) to execute the search warrant, and everyone got home safely. They didn't do a no-knock raid, didn't throw in any smoke bombs or flash bangs or whatever, and it was all done peacefully.

After that part was done, they took Stone down to the station, he called his high priced lawyer, and was released that afternoon, and he's still out of jail (luckily for him).

I read a story today about the police in GA as I recall going to a house party with no warrant, arresting all 60 people at that party, and the reason they gave for the warrantless search and mass arrest is these asshole cops claimed to have smelled some marijuana, from their car, with the windows closed, and after a search of all 60 attendees and the house they found less than an ounce of pot, total. Then the assholes put all their mugshots on the internet, causing many to lose their jobs, held some for days, right before they dropped all the BS charges because of an unconstitutional search, plus no one was doing anything actually wrong but being young and black.

I'll save my concerns for people who are ACTUALLY victims of jack booted thugs, not rich white guys like Stone, who was served with a good warrant, peacefully arrested and then released same day.

It exposed the fault line in the EC system.
These complaints about the EC are without basis. The EC is a known feature and it figures prominently in every electoral campaign. Pundits tell us about the importance of certain states, the ones that are earliest, those with “winner takes all” or proportional delegates, the “superdelegates”, their caucuses...

Towards the end of the campaign the media were tabulating how soon they’d be able to call the election taking into account the “winner takes all” votes in certain states and Hillary’s prognosticated victory. They had granular detail, turnout and county exit polls. Some pundits worried Hillary wasn’t campaigning in certain states instead of fundraising in Hollywood, but most figured she wouldn’t need the “flyover” country and its basketful of deplorables.

Oh, and Hillary had great “ground game”, a well-motivated and highly experienced “get out the vote” apparatus shuttling voters to the polls (Trump didn’t even know what “ground game” was).

Manafort’s age, no prior convictions, and probably his anticipated further sentencing this week.

The crimes he elocuted to in court warranted a sentence of 18 to 24 years according to all that.

The Electoral College is set up to protect the nation. It failed to do so in 2016. That is in addition to its basic mechanical flaws such as rewarding voters in smaller states with three to four times the weight behind their votes than voters in larger states. It produced a winner who was actually the loser in the vote of the people and thereby a president who is illegitimate in the eyes of large number of Americans.

Manafort's history of working for dictators for big bucks is notorious.

I disagree. Many who rape and murder get lighter sentences then that. Do you really think white collar crimes are worse then rape and murder?

Only to someone who is still has issues emotionally dealing with the defeat of the hildabeast in 2016.

Such a term of scorn reveals your own unhealthy obsession.

Fine - you disagree. The court still identified it as appropriate to sentence Manafort to 19 to 24 years for his crimes.

How did that work out for you in the 2016 election?

Sore Winner Syndrome.

Still carrying on.

One can see that getting flipped to sore loser is going to be a firestorm.

Yawn.....

Indeed for the 28 months since the election the Right has been sucking on the Hildabeast teat. It became catnip to 'em long ago. It's still their number one source of warmth and comfort. The country is oriented to the upcoming election but the Boys of the Right keep snuggling up to their big vonpantsuit teat. They know now in the shambles all around 'em it's all they got left. We over here meanwhile have always known where this was going. Yes indeed.

It is an addiction they cannot kick.
