(CNN) More than three weeks after he alleged that he was the victim of a hate crime, actor Jussie Smollett has been arrested on suspicion of filing a false report about it, Chicago police said Thursday morning.

The "Empire" star was taken into custody around 5 a.m. CT, police said, ahead of a 1:30 p.m. bail hearing.

Smollett faces a felony charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false report claiming he was attacked by two men, including one who was masked, in the early morning of January 29 in Chicago. He alleged they yelled racist and homophobic slurs, tied a rope around his neck and poured an unknown substance on him.

But in the weeks since the alleged attack first made headlines, the narrative has unraveled with several twists, transforming him from a victim to a suspect.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted Wednesday that the Cook County State's Attorney's Office had approved a felony criminal charge of disorderly conduct against Smollett.

Good. I hope he gets the book thrown at him. I was pretty skeptical of his story to begin with, as it was pretty fantastical from the start. And I was right to be. This guy is a total piece of ****. You did a serious disservice to all LGBT/POC in this country, by cooking up a hoax hate crime. Trying so hard to be a victim. You've just made it that much harder for people that are actually affected by hate crimes, to come out with them. Hopefully this will stand as a caution for anyone who takes these stories at face-value.

He's also looking at Federal charges because of the letter he sent himself; possibly even terrorism charges.

This ****ing clown didn't think this through. :lamo

Yep, the story seemed way too over the top to have not been captured on surveillance in the city.

Not only that, Smollett's actions after the alleged incident gave me a bad feeling from the get-go.

People don't get the hell beat out them (which the pictures showed only a few scratches) then proceed home calmly, making sure everyone sees a rope around their neck. I know that if I got beat-up by two thugs, I'd go to the nearest open place to get to a telephone and call the police.

Throw. Him. In. Jail.

Good. Reporting false attacks is horrific. Making it even harder for the LGBT community, who faces real abuse, makes it even worse.

I will say I never heard of this guy before it happened. Never heard of Empire either. If nothing else, he accomplished becoming a household name.

I figure this was a publicity stunt gone bad.
But I wonder how some people can feel justified in doing such things?
Maybe people should not be so quick to jump on bandwagons? Sort of like what happened to Kananaugh...

Exactly. That's why I'm pissed at him.

I've heard of Empire, but I've never really watched it. I think I've seen Jussie before, I just didn't know his name. I really only know Tiraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard from the show.

This mob mentality is not healthy on either side. He is innocent until proven guilty. Give him a chance to explain himself.

Yeah. When he gave the police redacted phone messages, and I watched that GMA interview, the red flags I had with his story initially, shot up like a rocket.

What a ****ing moron. Honestly, this guy came up with the most implausible hate crime hoax ever. So either he's an imbecille or he thinks everyone else is an imbecille.

Probably both, but him thinking the average American is dumb enough to buy his story shows the level of contempt the average Leftist has for the American people.

Sure they'll buy that I was attacked by two Trump supporters at 2 in the morning in Chicago. They bought the Russian collusion false narrative.

What an idiot. I hope he goes down hard. These false flag operations are not only dishonest, but they belittle the real incidents that happen.

That's funny, coming from a guy who said THIS not two days ago:

Celebrity Jussie Smollett supporters grapple with hoax reports | Fox News

Pathetic. This is Black History Month and Jussie Smollett has set back the black and gay community back. But you have these people still defending Jussie and claiming the Chicago PD set him up?

These people need to wake up. This is not a conspiracy. Jussie fooled his supporters and friends and should pay the price.

Hmm... the 'let's blame Trump' press apparently had no such doubts about that "hate crime" happening in the (deep blue?) heart of MAGA country.

Not as unusual as people suspect, as Smollet (who may have also sent the fake "hate letter" to his job) is only the latest in a run of such alleged crimes.

Here is a list of some occurring since Trump was elected:

19 ‘Hate Crimes’ in Trump Era That Were Hoaxes or Different Than Media Suggested
19 'Hate Crimes' in Trump Era That Were Hoaxes, Complicated

There ARE hate crimes going on, and they should rightly be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

But actions like those alleged to be Smollett's, if found to be true in a court of law, do a major disservice to the goal of identifying and taking appropriate steps towards eradicating hate crimes.

He'll have his day in court. If and when he's convicted (I'm expecting a plea deal that involves no jail time) **** him. This piece of **** could started a riot with his stupid little scheme. It could have cost lives just because this ****ing idiot wasn't getting the special treatment he thought he was entitled to.

That's the issue with them. I've seen some people going on the defense, as "starting a conversation". Bull****. Creating hoaxes isn't starting anything, that isn't under false pretenses.

Yep, agree. I wonder if he can be charged with a hate crime as well.

Aha! This is the show that Taraji P. Henson plays "Cookie" on then. I've never watched it, but I love her work on "Person of Interest."

To your point, Geraldo Rivera's opinion:

From the 2015 Charlestown Church massacre to the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue slaughter, violent hate crimes horrify us. When someone invokes the ugliness of those hate crimes for fraudulent ends, they disrespect every real victim of every lynching and racist attack down through the years.

The perpetrators of these frauds are shallow, grotesquely selfish, and deserving of our scorn. Shame on them. They are the real racists. Geraldo Rivera: If Jussie Smollett’s attack was a hoax, victims of real hate crime will pay the price | Fox News

What's really sad is that this probably never occurred to Smollett. What a self-centered dummy.

Yeah, the Leftists knew it was bull****, all along. :lamo

This was an incredibly stupid and irresponsible thing to do. In our politically polarized environment it could have led to bigger problems had people reacted before more information was released.

Yes, what will his rationale be? Childhood abuse? Bipolarism? Addiction?

I'm not sure on that.

Well I was thinking if you're filing a false police report and you're using homophobic slurs and racism (supposed noose) if that would qualify. You're probably right that it won't happen, but these folks that file false reports using hate (as the motivator of the false attack) are no better than the ones that use hate as the motivator to commit crimes IMO.

Hmm... the 'let's blame Trump' press apparently had no such doubts about that "hate crime" happening in the (deep blue?) heart of MAGA country.
Well, a hate crime can happen anywhere, but the whole "this is MAGA country N#####!" stuff sounded bizarre from the get-go.

I've been meaning to watch it, but I've never got around to it. Maybe I might try to catch up before (or if?) the new season comes around.
