ABC-7 -- Gov. Newsom ending high-speed rail project between SF, LA

How come everyone else can do it except us? Why can't we have nice things here in America?

Union assholes, corruption, cost overruns, environmental pricks worried about a spider's home...the usual stuff America experiences with big infrastructure projects.

Gov. Newsom ending high-speed rail project between SF, LA

California Gov. Newsom ending high-speed rail plan between SF, LA | abc7news.com
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday he's abandoning a plan to build a high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco, a project with an estimated cost that has ballooned to $77 billion. "Let's be real," Newsom said in his first State of the State address. "The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. There's been too little oversight and not enough transparency." The idea long championed by Newsom's predecessor, Jerry Brown, is years behind schedule. The latest estimate for completion is 2033.
But Newsom's speech went beyond immigration and other disagreements with the White House to his own ambitious policy goals for the state. Newsom has laid out his vision for California twice already, in his inaugural address and through his first crack at the state budget. He spent his first month in office traveling to different parts of the state promoting his ideas on housing, juvenile justice and the environment.

Good to see Gruesome Newsom has a brain and that he's at least willing to use it once in a while.

So smacked with reality about a for real high speed rail project, and it's financial non-viability, what does NGD demand?
Yet more high speed rail, many multiple times greater than this failed one.

And people want to charge in and proceed?

I guess common sense isn't as common as everyone thought.

This outcome of a high speed rail project would be repeated across the country, should the GND be formalized into legislation. It would be just as financially un-viable as this CA project, only multiplied hundreds, of not thousands, of times.

Now who has really lost their grip on reality?

The market price for oil is the same everywhere, I think that is why they call it market price. They built trains because at the time it made sense for them. You can't point to any pair of any cities of size in either Asia or Europe that don't have a flight going between them. Thrive is a relative value. Are there any trains that are self-sustaining without government assistance?

~~~~~~
You're right... Trains are the backbone of cities without them transportation of goods is not possible. Cities of all nations depend on the boats, trains and smaller vehicles to transport and disperse good throughout the countryside.
And America takes another step backwards.
Open-ended wall-building budget and nothing for high-speed rail. Next stop- 1955.
sorry i would never take a train for work. i do not have the time to waste on a multi-day train trip.
a plane works very well for what i do. i can cross the country in about 8 hours not multiple days.
Our the course of human history, the speed of transportation was a sign of progress. First walking, then horse, then train, then automotive, then air, possibly soon, sub-orbital and hyper-sonic, for both people and goods. The speed of life increased, to where it is now.
To discard the latest, fastest and most efficient improvements in transportation technologies represents taking a significant step backwards. To do so willingly is to willfully regressive.
Sounds like you live in NYC. The Mayor and homeless have turned the subway tunnel System into pissoirs and they certain smell the same.
One of the biggest problems with California's HSR project was a lack of expertise in how to build trains and an unwillingness to accept outside help. Both France and China offered to help build the rail, but the CA HSR Authority refused it. As one professor noted, it was “the equivalent of Bangladesh saying they’d go to the moon with indigenous technology” and completely ignoring technology that already existed.
I have taken high speed rails in many economically developed countries- from Japan to a number of European countries like France, Germany, and Switzerland. Amazingly fast, efficient, clean, and luxurious. How come everyone else can do it except us? Why can't we have nice things here in America?
Probably due to all those regulations that the democrats keep pushing and to a smaller extent unions.
Well England has been working on theirs for some time. Since the early 80s if memory serves, or the late 80s. Not to mention some of these places have been given government aid to the tune of billions, applied after inflation just to be sure and probably used a rather high end taxation credit to help fund it as well.
No real problem for them in most part. It's just that the US is one of the largest countries, if not, the largest in landmass and they would probably have better chances building this rail system in a state that doesn't choke any new building project to death with red tape, like California does.
I was not aware the California High Speed rail project included shipping goods.
China’s High-Speed Train Map Puts U.S. Transportation to Shame
The sad truth is that, far from being a leader, the United States is way behind on building a modern transportation network. Compare the train maps of the United States, Europe, and China, and you’ll see how devoid of both regular and high-speed trains the United States is in comparison to the latter two regions. Nearly all the existing higher speed lines noted on the U.S. map would still fall in the standard gray category of the European map.
China opened its first high-speed rail line to connect Beijing and Tianjin in 2008 — the same year that California voters approved the state’s high-speed rail project. Since then, China has spent an estimated $360 billion to build 22,000 km (13,670 miles) of high-speed rail — more than every other country combined — and is expected to add another 15,000 km (9,321 miles)
It's time American's face up to the fact... "We ARE NOT the Know it All Nations"..... its time to relax and start to "Learn From Others". Its evident China has higher mastery of this advancement in rail travel than the U.S. and they have a Government that know more of how to use the "emminent domain clause" for the sake of the nation's Transportation system.
America could have long ago been ahead of the game in High Speed Rail, if only they "study history" not just of early Rail Road Construction....but of President Eisenhower's Freeway Program and how it was set in design,moved to development and was built across the nation. Nearly all Freeways in America... have enough "adjacent land" along the Freeway Routes to Accommodate and Support High Speed Rail Lines.
Get the Crooks Out of It...!!!! Turn it into a "FEDERAL PROJECT", with Federal Workers and Cost Cap Managed Contractors where needed... Or... Go Ask China to come and build it.
We need minds like President Eisenhower, or for that matter President F.D. Roosevelt - and minds like President L.B.Johnson to get anything of such volume built!!!!!!
Even today, Warren Buffett could get it done, because since he bought into the Rail Road Business, tracks have been being repaired all across the nation.
The worst thing in America is the "Contractor Games"... The Government should only bring them in "Under Fixed in Stone Contract Guidelines", and Make Fixed in Stone Contracts with Rail Steel Producers, and everything Needed to Build the Rail Road. If they don't want to work with that, then the Government would be best to set up its own "Rail Steel Production Facility, and Produce its own steel for High Speed Rail Systems, as Part of a Infrastructure Project Under the same principles of "National Security".... because it was a sense and concern for National Security, that led President Eisenhower to build the Freeways as a Dedicated Project. He learned that from World War II... when he became away of the National Important of Transportation Networks as being a vital component to National Security.
We've become too ingrained in trusting "greed driven university graduates who've been taught to chase a "title" and expect a financial windfall every 3 months", and then want to be given part of the company via stocks"...., these same minions, who've never worked a day in their life, while mommy and daddy paid to send them to Ivy League and its High Status Network Universities, with a Trust Fund and a Instantly Re-filled Credit Card.
We should by now have had enough of that, seeing the industry of the nation devastated by this same process. It's time for Change.
We have a nation full of people with education from the non descript universities, who are not demanding $250K and upwards, or $10's of millions a year, and expecting a bonus for doing what they are paid to do, while still expecting to be given stocks that give them ownership stakes in business and industry.
We have the College Graduates from Across the Nation with good skills, technical know how and they are fine working for 80-150K to do some of the same work and likely to a better sense of dedicated standard, because it gives them work to do, helps them take care of their family and allows them to contribute while building a future for their family, and helping build the systems that benefit the nations future.
We can change the dynamic of how things are built in America and get off this "University Trained Fleecing as the University Sell These Degree Certificate" that become in far too many instances, "Fleecing Instruments", especially from the overpriced Ivy League system, and the 12 top status Universities.
Education is Education and with the Computers Today, knowledge can be engaged from any University, College.... to begin to give Credibility to these Non Descript Named Universities and Colleges, who can and do have very talented people who attend.
We have to AGAIN, learn to believe in the AMERICAN PEOPLE.. not in status and title, wealthy and pompous status.
A B.S. / B.A. Degree should be a "B.S. / B.A. Degree - by standards of what it is, no matter where its acquired., UNLESS... we will continue with the game of thinking and considering a "B.S. / B.A. Degree that does not come from a High Dollar and High Status Organization as being nothing more than a "Bull Shit", "Basic Asshole" Degree.... Therefore, its either going to be a degree that is fully credited with being of the standard of quality, regardless or where its acquired, or it fits in the degradation of claiming it to be less than, no matter where it's acquired.... It should not be based on anything other than the standard, Not made lesser because one did not pay a higher fee for it, or get it from a status organizations that has wealth popularity attached to it.
When we wake up to this and stop screwing over our young people, who can't or don't have the "throw away money" to buy it based on status, but earn it at the lower cost educational establishments.
This can help American young people across the nation, and bring the Federal Grant Money to be Spread Across the Network of Educational Facilities and not just dumped in the "high cost, wealth controlled Ivy League System"... who in turn ... use taxpayer money to push status, and come out and want to be paid a fortune above everyone else, when they rode on programs that were in many parts funded by Taxpayer monies.
WE NEED TO WAKE UP... AND LEARN NOT TO BE FLEECED AND DUPED AS A PEOPLE.... Then we can get back to RESPECTING the Human Spirit, of People, and the Ingenuity of our Young as American's with a Can Do Attitude, that is not stifled away by status games devised by wealthy controlled systems....
We are still a nation of people who can and do "think", we can and do "create and innovate" and we can be the nation who respects its people as individual, not measure ourselves by what those of wealthy tell us, is what and how we should measure ourselves.
People don't engage in the subject matter to gain the truths of us as Americas... they only fall into the "game" that has been played out on people of separating people in "Tribal Groups engaged in a endless Warfare"... by being "Divided into Political Camps"....
YOU ARE FIRST AND FOREMOST "AMERICAN PEOPLE".... Get over this "Political Camp Madness"... it only benefits the wealthy to remain being the wealthy, who have control over the masses and push and promote their Plutocratic Ideals, and turn the masses into nothing more than Camps of Serf's, pitting one group of Serf's against the other group of Serf's.. while the wealthy fleece both camps and leave the people in a fit of other divisive mad making games from Race, Religion and Wealth and Poor....
You make the choice of being part of the madness making that has diminished the people more and more 'every generations" while the wealthy become the Plutocrats that Control and Dictate the Pathways of the Nation.
Divide and Conquer... has been mastered and masterfully played out upon and against the people... and we are still "blind to our subservience into the madness"....
Look at the ignorance of some of the comments.. that have nothing to do with the mindfulness of how to get this thing built. all these comments of many show is... partisan put down commentary, that does not advance and build anything, but contempt and rage... and the result is "we are decades behind in building high speed rails".....
People won't come to the thread with ideals and thoughts of what needs to be done, they only come if they can throw slap stick sarcasm back and forth of political ignorance making idiocy. We had better awaken... OR the only thing that will advance us, is to have a Government that takes control and get it done without our having a voice or say in the matter when it comes to public infrastructure projects.
Nope i am a project analyst for an IT company. We cover the globe. A train is very inefficient for what i do. when i travel my company limits me to 1 layover on domestic
flights. for international you are at the mercy of where you are going but you still need to get there in a timely manner.
I can't take a train to europe or asia or other places i may go.
a plane is the most efficient way for me to travel.
train works well in europe because they installed the infrastructure for it. in the US people traveled by rail till the invention of the car.
then the interstate system pretty much killed the rail road.
in europe it is more cost effective to take a train because gas prices are so outrageous per/liter that driving is a luxury for most people.
All of those things exist in Japan and France as well. And yet they have the nice trains, and we don’t. It’s got to be more than that.
A Democratic governor just quashed Democrats’ dreams of high-speed rail in America
https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...america/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.20f52e3e5831
By Colby Itkowitz -- President Barack Obama secured $8 billion in his 2009 economic stimulus package to start building toward the dream of true high-speed trains whisking passengers between major American cities. It was a paltry amount compared to the hundreds of billions it would actually take to fulfill that dream, but it was considered a serious down payment.
At the time, Obama’s transportation secretary, Ray LaHood, said, “I’m not a historian, but I know this: One of the legacies for this administration, for the president and the vice president, will be high-speed rail. That will be their transportation legacy.”
A decade later, little progress has been made on getting the country any closer to having the type of modernized train system popular in Europe and Asia.
On Tuesday the dream got its harshest blow yet: California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced he was scaling back plans for high-speed rail between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
"Abandoning high-speed rail entirely means we will have wasted billions and billions of dollars with nothing but broken promises, partially filled commitments and lawsuits to show for it,” Newsom said. So what about what LaHood said about it being Obama’s legacy? “It can’t be his legacy if it doesn’t get carried out,” he said.
>>>>
Newsom just squashed the financial windfalls of a bunch of corrupt greedy politicians and greedy investors.
Rail, itself, is not a bad idea. It needs sane engineering, private corporate management, and use the existing rail network. Privatize passenger service.
For under 500 miles or so, rail can be faster than flying — with all the inefficient overhead in time wasted that flying entails.
Central city to central city, with no cabs, limos, or long distances to big airports can be faster or equal without all the “security” and stupidity that today’s Flying Greyhound Busses with wings offer.
Rail will be attractive once again — in time, but only as a business for profit.
Just look at the state of rail travel on tracks we already have -- and between points which carry millions of travelers daily. I'm looking at you Amtrak and Metro North. Last month, a young mother with a stroller died falling down subway stairs in N.Y.C. because they hadn't maintained the lighting or installed a working escalator. The most simple maintenance tasks left undone speaks volumes about the whole system. With their mentality of justifying the status quo and resistance to improvements, how can the railroads deliver excellence?
I was speaking in generalities. Today most of our long distance trains are used to transport goods from state to state and city to city. Our rapid transportation systems are found in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, D.C. Boston etc. Some of them smell like pissoirs, especially those in NYC....
