10 men framed by Chicago police sergeant exonerated

Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A Cook County judge on Monday dropped charges against 10 men who went to prison after being framed by a disgraced Chicago police sergeant.

Four more men who were jailed under similar circumstances are expected to also be exonerated this week, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

The exonerations are connected to Chicago Police Sgt. Ronald Watts who, with colleague Kallatt Mohammed, authorities say was caught in 2012 during a sting. It followed accusations that Watts and his unit targeted dozens of housing project residents with dubious arrests.

Since then, dozens of people have been exonerated after being accused of drug possession or were framed by Watts or his team between 2003 and 2008, CBS Chicago reported.

COMMENT:-

OK, so this concerns a SMALL number of police officers, but it puts a BIG credibility hole in the reputation of every police officer who tries to convince people that the police are always to be trusted - doesn't it?

BTW 1 - Mr. Watts was recently sentenced to a whole 22 months in jail for stealing money from drug couriers. Whether he, or his cohorts will ever be prosecuted for their actions in securing false convictions has yet to be determined. (Don't bet on it.)

BTW 2 - A further 10 CPD officers have been barred from testifying in ANY trial because of their links to Mr. Watts so the ramifications of his actions aren't quite as "minor" as they seem.

BTW 3 - The odds that Chicago will be able to recoup, from Mr. Watts, what it has to pay out in consequence of Mr. Watts actions are roughly as high as the odds that Barack Obama will be elected President of the United States of America in 2020, and again in 2024, and again in 2028, and again in 2032, and again in 2036, and ...

BTW 4 - The current count of tossed convictions and exonerations is 80+ and climbing.

BTW 5 - The one "good" aspect of this matter is that Mr. Watts is NOT "White" and was equally at ease with securing false convictions against anyone regardless of race, colour, creed, political beliefs, or national origin. He is a fine example of a non-discriminatory jerk.

Well, that’s just the unfortunate thing about it. A cop goes dirty once and suddenly every criminal he ever put away was “framed.”

That's not what I said at all. Not only that, but it wouldn't be something that I would say.

However, I will say that one (and there appear to have been more than one involved here) "Bad Cop" does take a bit of the wind out of "The Policeman is always kindly and honest and is always your friend" sails - doesn't it?

A cop goes bad 'once'. Lmao. Okay.
