Pelosi asks Trump to reschedule SOTU because of the shutdown

Security for me, but not for thee. Typical Marie Antoinette-style of Nancy Pelosi.
The peak irony of Nancy Pelosi citing security concerns over the safety of the SOTU attendees due to government entities responsible for providing security not being funded because of the government shutdown, as Nancy Pelosi refuses to fund more border fencing (which has been proven effective in reducing crime and illegal immigration, thus keeping Americans safer), thus continuing the government shutdown.

Who wants to offer Nancy Pelosi $1 for her SOTU security? $1, Nancy. Not a penny more!

What ? Just more partisan tripe totally without any meaning at all.

Pelosi and Schumer should be removed for voting for 700 miles of border barrier making them more racist, evil and wasteful than the 300 miles Trump wants to add.

Come on, you can do better than that. OR...maybe you can't. That was under W and two dem votes for what the right and left wanted then.

By that standard, every repub who supports trump should also be removed as accessories.

This is new ground for me (but then having a Russian asset for a President is new for all of us), but it would appear that Pelosi isn't asking Trump to not give a SotU speech. She's cancelling it outright.

Yes and no apparently.

Speaker controls the chamber and the House properties. Speaker and Senate pro tempore share control over the Capitol Police Force which is their institutional police force, but Speaker has priority.

Although and ordinarily if the chief of the executive branch showed up without notice in the House chamber he'd be welcomed etc., this would not be the case in this instance. He needs an invite. Separate but equal branches of government. We know Potus himself can't introduce a bill in Congress, that he has to get a member of congress to do it. Congress is not the bailywick of Potus plain and simple.

Pelosi asked Trump to postpone which is what it is, Pelosi's polite request of Trump to postpone. Trump could refuse and demand the sou as per the invitation that had been made on Jan 3rd but that would be yet another hissyfit. Pelosi could tell the secret service to stay away from any planning they might try to do and so on for other agencies etc. Postpone could also mean indefinitely postpone this sou although Pelosi didn't say that but that's how it could turn out as weeks and months pass.

Pelosi btw also told the Democratic party caucus no shouts of "liar" if a sou does occur. She said Democrats are better than that and that yokel Redneck Republican Racist who did that to OB.

Every day with this administration demands another lesson in how our government works. We've been coasting our entire lives on the honor system and never knew it.

OK, I'll address your comment on it's merits. I don't see anything especially 'petty' in the request. Trump shut down the government, including all the people required to meet the security requirements imposed by a now shut-down agency (DHS). At best Trump is demanding that unpaid federal workers jump through the new requirements of his own DHS to meet those strict security arrangements.

**** that. If DHS says SOTU requires extraordinary efforts to ensure the participants are safe, and that's what Nielsen did, best to do it when the men and women who will do the work (those not on furlough) and who are already taking up the slack from furloughed workers, are not all also when not working figuring out how to pay/extend their damn mortgages or working extra jobs or getting their garage sales ready, i.e. open the damn government so those workers are PAID to meet the new, higher, DHS security standards.

1) Trump's DHS declares SOTU a NSSE which requires the "full resources of the federal government" to ensure the safety of participants
2) Trump declares shutdown, and decides not to pay the people responsible for that security for over a month, and promises a possibly months longer period of no pay for those same people until HE GETS HIS MONEY!!!

Doesn't take a lot of logic to see the disconnect there, unless you're a Trump lemming. What's petty about asking Trump to sacrifice a little bit by delaying his SOTU until the people already sacrificing from no pay for a month get their paychecks and are, you know, paid for the EXTRA work Trump's speech will demand? Seems like the "petty" stance is to not give a **** about the hardships Trump is proud to impose on those workers and sacrifice a little himself. Pelosi isn't asking much. Trump can simply delay his big speech before Congress, or provide the SOTU in writing, or give the speech by his lonesome from the WH. Seems like a small ask versus demanding thousands of federal workers serve TRUMP'S needs for no pay...
As to point 1), the DHS has stated that security for the event is a nonissue, they are able to ensure the event is secure regardless of the shutdown.

Second, I didn't say it was petty to ask Trump to postpone... I said the idea that she wouldn't allow him to use a room if he does decide to go ahead with the address would be petty.

Can Trump give a State-of-the-Union address from his Oval Office?

Yes, he is required to provide Congress information regarding the State of the Union, but the manner it is done is not specified. Originally, Presidents provided their State of the Union information in writing, not as a speech before a joint session of Congress.

Every day with this administration demands another lesson in how our government works. We've been coasting our entire lives on the honor system and never knew it.

I worked professional staff in the House many moons ago so I had to brush the dust off some of this. Still I had to check with Congressional Research Service on this one. You know CRS but let me attest CRS is the House and Senate staffer's window to the world in an instant. Others here are advised that CRS' unclassified work which is humongous is available to the public on request. Available online for sure too. Superb source that is comprehensive and thorough, as it is meant to be for members of congress and staff.

I think Trump should pepper his SOTU with quotes of things Chuck, Nancy and others have said to him in their closed door meetings with him...play audio recordings if he has them.

The Trump haters will howl in outrage, but the public will learn some truth.

If he does Mueller shall then have to subpoena him to see what other recordings he may have made to see what other 'truths' he can learn from them.

Indeed so Trump might have to mail it in.

Trump certainly has played his hand well by staying in Washington during the shutdown while Democrats vacationed over the holidays. And then after just a couple days returning to Washington there were 40 off to sunny Puerto Rico with their families on a private flight, rooms at a resort with meals included compliments of 100 powerhouse lobbyists like Microsoft, Facebook etc.

He has also reached out for meetings with leadership where the word has gotten out that they are not interested in negotiating and flat out refused to come to the WH this week. These optics seem to have harmed the Dems. That could be why there are Democrats in Congress finding microphones the last couple of days claiming they are open to funding barriers on the border where needed.

Also San Fran Nan has another problem brewing. It is the latest caravan heading to the U.S. border. It started out with 500 and has now increased to 2000 as of this morning. It should be arriving just about the time of president Trump's SOTU address. And while Pelosi and Schumer say there is no crisis at the border, just yesterday Mexico shutdown another shelter where hundreds of migrants were staying. A growing number of Mexicans are fed up with the caravans along with the increase of diseases such as TB, flu, and an outbreak of lice. And then there is the report from Physicians without Borders stating a third of the women who make the journey end up being raped. When you have the speaker of the House declare a wall is immoral and refuses to negotiate it sends a message to encourage migrants that if they can just get to U.S. soil they can stay in detention for a short time and be released where they can get lost in this country in a sanctuary city of their choice. Very bad optics for San Fran Nan especially with an unfettered Trump during a SOTU to highlight it.

But with all this aside, Trump has a lot of good news to highlight that his administration has accomplished this past year that gets little to no coverage in the MSM including some bi-partisan bills getting passed and signed into law.

HEAR! HEAR! :applaud

Roaeann:)

Trump should tell Pelosi to shove it....Not only is he going to give it, but I hope he stands up there and highlights every childish thing Pelosi and here ilk are doing, or shall I say NOT doing about this shutdown....

Sounds like she is starting to see the American people seeing through her's and Schmucky's BS, and are placing blame where it belongs....ON THEM.

The point being made is that Congress is a separate but co-equal branch of government and Ms Pelosi is pointing out to your Orange God that is exactly how she intends to run the branch of it that she now heads up. The game has changed from what it was 2 years ago and the sooner the President learns that the better off he's going to be.

He can't give it from the Capitol unless he's invited by Pelosi. Let him give it on one of his rallies.

Pelosi Invites President Trump to Deliver State of the Union Address

January 4, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent the following letter today to President Trump inviting him to deliver a State of the Union address to a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, January 29, 2019.

Below is a text of the letter to the President:

January 3, 2018

The President
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

The Constitution established the legislative, executive and judicial branches as co-equal branches of government, to be a check and balance on each other. The Constitution also calls for the President to “from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union.”

In the spirit of our Constitution, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 in the House Chamber.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Congress.

Sincerely,

NANCY PELOSI
Speaker of the House

Trump can use "the room" anytime as its clean, sanitary, attended and immediately off the House Floor.

Nothing says Potus must appear in the Capitol to present a SOU. Or should. Or could. Or might. And conversely nothing says the House has to accommodate him. Still I'm confident Pelosi would allow Trump to use "the room" if nature were to call while Potus were there for whatever reason, to include an address.

You sound confused. What room did you think we were talking about?

Move the State of the Union Address to fly over country! Say Missouri or Iowa. Rent a stadium and invite everyday citizen to
attend the address. Have special guest's like the border patrol, police officers and first responder's.

Congressmen/Congresswomen who want to attend can catch a flight out of Washington. Call Pelosi's bluff.
This could be an amazing event!

Again, great argument and love the way-back machine example. I wasn't paying particular attention to the SDI standoff, but will research the political dynamics for perspective. It would seem to me, however, that in your example, at some point, someone budged. Thus far, Pelosi is dug in. Won't give a penny! How do you bargain with someone who says, "I will give you nothing"?
It's absurd and I'm surprised polls don't reflect it. Yet.
I wonder if Tip O'Neil was trying to damage Reagan politically, or if he truly believed SDI was immoral.

The answer is Tip O'Neil didn't believe we had the technology to make it work. An old argument was SDI can't stop them all. Reagan countered that even if SDI stopped half, that was still better than none and worth it. In the end, both gave in on some of their demands and worked out a compromise. Not all the funding Reagan wanted, but enough to keep SDI alive and moving forward.

As to damaging Reagan, no. Tip and pretty much most Democrats didn't want to do that. I think at the time, everyone on each side realized a successful presidency mean a successful America. Tip and Ronnie would clash over cuts in domestic spending, defense spending and other issues. A compromise was worked out on each. Tip at one point said about Reagan, "I really dislike his politics, but I really do like the man."

I think today, Democrats to include Schumer and Pelosi definitely hate Trump's politics and hate the man. The feeling is probably mutual. Unlike the Democrats of Tip's and Ronnie's era, once Reagan defeated Carter, they didn't set out to destroy Reagan. They did to Trump.

Trump's been invited. Pelosi needs to disinvite him.

Pelosi just did that.

Pelosi asked Trump to postpone which means to forget about it.

Trump's stumped. So are his people. After all even in a court case Trump can buy off the plantiff and settle it. This is completely different. This is about the institutions of government in Washington and the people who know how to navigate them and to redirect the people who walk in off the street which is what Trump did.

Senate chamber is too small for 535 of 'em which is anyway why it's in the House chamber. Maybe Maralago eh. Kremlin's pretty big or so I hear.

I wonder if this is reverse psychology. Maybe she wants the SOTU to be televised but was worried Trump would cancel so she recommended it be cancelled first so Trump would do the opposite.

Just speculating out loud as I have no evidence to back that up.

The President also has the power to convene both Houses of Congress “on extraordinary occasions”. I wonder if that’s next on the political theater playcard.

I like my idea better to use the Kremlin.

Think of all the applause from the Russian deputies plus the Republicans from Washington all in one hall for Trump Himself.

Awesome.

Maybe the President should invite all the government workers who don't have paychecks because he's pigheaded. It would be a better spectacle. He could tell another lie about whose fault the shutdown is, and instead of having 1/2 the chamber clap like a bunch of seals, he'd get booed by 20,000 angry people. He'd start sweating so bad, his orange paint would start to drip off.

And the Emmy for best comedy/drama goes to...The US Government!

;)

As to point 1), the DHS has stated that security for the event is a nonissue, they are able to ensure the event is secure regardless of the shutdown.

Sure, political appointees of DHS on behalf of its unpaid employees who will work 12-16 hour days to secure the event don't have a problem that their employees won't get paid, maybe for months, for their efforts. Very persuasive... It's petty to consider their interests and put pressure on Trump to pay them for the extra work he's asking them to do as their bills go unpaid.

Second, I didn't say it was petty to ask Trump to postpone... I said the idea that she wouldn't allow him to use a room if he does decide to go ahead with the address would be petty.

Why is it petty? He can give the address from the WH if he wants, or from Fox News studios, maybe on Fox and Friends! Your argument for it being petty is it's not what POTUS wants to do. Poor baby.... :boohoo: If he wants his big, adoring audience to clap for him in person, totally unnecessary for him to deliver his SOTU address, Trump will have to suck it up and recognize that he's not the only one with power in D.C.
