Pelosi asks Trump to reschedule SOTU because of the shutdown

If Democrats have time to party in Puerto Rico, they have time to attend a SOTU address. If they're worried about "a platform to blame them for the shutdown" they could avoid that by sitting down and trying to work out a compromise, something they've been completely unwilling to do thus far.

Or they could go the other route and try to shut down the SOTU address while they frolic on the beach after sending meaningless bills they know aren't going anywhere.

How much will the wall cost?

More than $5.6B

Are you demanding the wall be prepaid??

I'm demanding that we see some money from Mexico before we even think about building the wall. Without that, no wall. Let the 2020 election be about the wall for all I care. Trump has been blabbing all over how he is a "master negotiator" and here we are with the longest government shutdown and his lying that Mexico will pay for it. If he can't get $5.6B of Mexico money to start, then why the hell would I trust him to get over $50B of Mexico money for the wall?

She doesn't want him talking about the state of the country while the country is in a state?

fascinating.

No she doesn't want him spouting nonsense, lying and talking about stuff he doesn't begin to understand. Basically he's not capable of delivering a SOU under IDEAL circumstances. So there's that.:lamo

The lie is that they were partying, they were raising funds to help Puerto Rico out since Trump and his band of idiots won't help them out like he helped Texas and Florida. Your lying posts are pathetic.

Well that would be a great suggestion, perhaps you can instruct Trump on that since he's been blabbing that Mexico will pay for the wall for the past 2.5 years and still doing it.

I guess "Mexico will pay for it" has a better ring than "Mexico will pay for it "eventually" over the course of decades after I make the American Taxpayer pay for it all first" huh?

Your objection does not seem to be about having increased border security (which even demorats say that they support) but simply to make Trump look bad by denying him the ability to say that a campaign promise was kept. So far, all of our border security, including (700?) miles of physical barriers, has been taxpayer funded - did you really expect that to change based on a Trump campaign pledge?

YES.

Miss Nancy is right.

President Trump should delay the State of the Union speech until there is a resolution to the current unpleasantness.

Besides, if he gives it, no doubt many Democrats will boycott it.

I like President Trump and think that he is a patriot who is trying to do what is best for American citizens, but I acknowledge that he has quite an ego. So I do not think that he would take kindly to speaking to an empty house.

I have heard that in earlier days, the president of this country never delivered the speech in person. He just sent a copy to Congress where someone read it. Maybe he should do that.

Are you a confidant of Speaker Pelosi? I did not see that reason in the story.

No, it's to hold him accountable. And yes, when he keeps spouting off the same bull**** (even this year) than we are going to hold him accountable for his lies. The majority of American people do not want to build his wall with taxpayer money.

If the wall will cost more than 5.6B as you estimate, is it possible that Mexico may still pay for the wall?

Yes, "raising funds" - lol.

so 24/7 they are to be working while down there? Nice Cherry picking there. I'm sure we'll see complaints from you about Trump's golfing anytime now.

So that's what the moron Pelosi's idea is, no STOTU. Maybe she should get her stretched out face into the White House and get a deal done, if she is so concerned.

Not from what any sane American has seen. He's lying as usual. The majority of American people do NOT want the wall paid with taxpayer money. Sorry you hate that.

There is no constitutional requirement to even give a speech. Article II, Section 3, Clause 1 merely states:
The President “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”

He/she could do that with a letter published in the New York Times.

Well, then he should give it from the Oval Office. Pelosi's biggest concern is "security", and that would be eliminated if he were to give the televised speech from his Oval Office.
Democrats an Republicans alike could enjoy it in the comfort of their home or any vacation spot in the world.

Not seeing the issue here - from my perspective, the SOTU speech is nothing but a bunch of politicos preening for the cameras for the better part of 2 hours once a year. And the speech, in most cases, is vacuous pap. And I'd venture a guess that the whole charade costs the American taxpayer in excess of $20 million.

President Trump gave the nation a dignified defense of his position on the border wall a few days ago and a similar type of speech from the Oval Office in lieu of the charade would be a wise move. In fact, he should disband the SOTU practice going forward.

I hope the impasse is all on the dems. I fear not, however. For example, I think Graham of S.Carolina wants Trump to declare a national emergency so congresscritters don't have to vote on the controversial wall issue...The protecting the border issue. Unfortunately, we already know how congresscritters have reacted to immigration reform. They are more interested in their reelection than representing the people or protecting the country. I'm not saying the system is bad I'm saying the people in the system are bad.

TERM LIMITS FOR ALL.

How about a compromise?

Trump sends them a letter and, while it's being delivered, Trump reads his letter to the nation from the Oval Office...broadcast on all the major media, including youtube, facebook, etc.

Nah...we already know Nancy won't compromise. Never mind.

Trump should tell Pelosi to shove it....Not only is he going to give it, but I hope he stands up there and highlights every childish thing Pelosi and here ilk are doing, or shall I say NOT doing about this shutdown....

Sounds like she is starting to see the American people seeing through her's and Schmucky's BS, and are placing blame where it belongs....ON THEM.

Too late on the shutdown as trump himself took ownership. The rest of the country...isn't buying this ****.

However, do you mean for example, the big corporate tax rate cut as just more republican fiscal child abuse ?

Is that the childish policy you write of ?

There have been some great SOTU speeches. Trump's first (I know, not technically a SOTU because he had only been in office weeks) was good. It was almost great, but he had a few blunders ("great great wall, not just a great wall").

These speeches are prepared by the best and a lot of work goes into them by the President and others.

Maybe I'm just a Speech and Debate nerd, but I like SOTUs and I find them informative. I'd like to have it.

The SOTU is terrible. I don't know why he would want to have a rally during his failure.
