Trump says he ‘never said’ Mexico would pay for the wall. But he did – a lot

Wrong again:

Trump’s new insistence that he never envisioned Mexico writing a check to pay for the wall is contradicted by a since-archived memo posted on his campaign website in 2016. The memo, titled “Compelling Mexico to Pay for the Wall,” outlines a plan to pressure Mexico to put up funds for a border wall within three days of Trump taking office.

“It's an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year,” the memo says, referring to “remittances from Mexican nationals working in the United States.”

You will believe any baloney that your cult leader tells you...and you will believe him when he says he didn't say what he said.

Cults.....the mind is a terrible thing to waste.

How does the tourist industry die. I did not know that the tourist industry entered our country illegally. Do they fly to Mexico and then sneak into our country. I have toured other countries. I always entered their countries legally. I guess that is not the liberal way.

It dies with your tax on border crossings.

" ...I expected a toll or tax to be levied on the people entering our country just like we do when we build a bridge. The people who use it should pay for it. The people coming into our country should pay for background checks and the security necessary to secure our border. ..."

You can only administer it to legal crossers, since illegal ones don't use border facilities, where they aren't allowed through.

Lol @ big toe. I gotta give you points for that one. Nice come back.

How would you stop the horses of people who are demanding entry by the thousands?

It's really a cost-benefit analysis.

How many people actually try to illegally cross the border in the desert? How much does each of those cost us?

How much will the various solutions (a wall, fencing in certain places, automated surveillance, some combo of them etc) cost us?

Then pick the one that gives you the most bang for the buck. It may be that none of them are cost effective - i.e. it simply isn't problem worth fixing. I tend to doubt that but it is possible.

The problem I have is that Trump says "wall" and doesn't back that up with actual analysis that proves a wall is worth building. I suspect he has no analysis but that's just me.

The problem Congress has - rightly - is that he's asking for 5 billion and not actually saying what he's gonna spend it on.

I didn't know people who entered illegally paid for a visa or a fee for crossing at a port of entry, which is how you suggested we'd raise the $25 billion or more to build and maintain the Great Wall of Trump plus the costs of border agents and all the rest.

And if you raise fees to get into the country high enough to pay for the costs of securing the border, you'll get many fewer visitors here. But maybe not - if fees on international travel and other border crossings can fund the cost, let's just do it. See what happens, and then Trump doesn't have to ask Congress for the money. That's what Trump promised, so why hasn't it been done, or at least a plan to feasibly just do it been prepared and circulated so we can all work the math?

That is the reason for the wall, the border patrol, and the rest of the necessary things to secure our border. To stop people from entering illegally. Then we can start allowing legal people with work visas into this country to work instead of lawless criminals. When they enter our country legally they will fill out the proper forms letting us know who they work for and provide documentation that proper wages and taxes are paid complying with our laws as apposed to breaking our laws. The people working in this country can apply for immigration status if they do not break our laws. We want law abiding people not criminals in our country. These people working in our country that are not citizens will pay a tax to fund this the same as we pay a tax to fund SS. A win win situation for everyone and we have law abiding people coming to our country not lawless losers. What is so hard to understand about this.

It's astounding how many complete idiot scumbags we have in this country that will still support Trump after just insanity after insanity, lie after lie, its truly unreal. this country deserves to go down in tubes that we allowed this POS to become president, and POS like McConnel to lead the Senate

Lots of the goons around trump want to curb "legal immigration" also...Especially if they are non white....Border security is important......Spending Billions on a "campaign promise" is not....trump should open the government and compromise for the funds needed

Well, Trump said it would be easy, so Just Do It, Trump. Show us how a master negotiator gets a foreign country to pay for our infrastructure and security.

You secure our border than charge the people entering to pay for it the same as we do with bridges. This is simple for anyone with intelligence. It is done all the time. We have tolls all across this country that pays for infrastructure. We need to secure our border and the people entering our country need to pay for the infrastructure. This so simple my 8 year old nephew can comprehend it.

A large perct of Hotel workers are immigrant workers...Some legal , some not....White people won't do the work....The Hotel and restaurant industry (one of many) would collapse overnight without these workers...

One of me best friend used to make a good living cleaning hotels until they hired illegals to do it for less than minimum wage and no taxes are paid. A hard working citizen put out of work by a greedy hotel owner and a lawless criminal that is not even supposed to be in this country. This is what you support? Pathetic is all I can say.

No the democrats need to step up and do their job securing our border instead of kicking the can down the road for another 100 years.

Not at all.....So should the business be fined?......Strange how so many lawless criminals get hired isn't it...Illegally entering the United States is wrong...Using rascit insults to these people is just as wrong

I never expected Mexico to write us a check. I figured once we finally stopped kicking the can down the road and secured our border (something that should have already been done) I expected a toll or tax to be levied on the people entering our country just like we do when we build a bridge. The people who use it should pay for it. The people coming into our country should pay for background checks and the security necessary to secure our border. This is just simple common sense. Then we go after all the people violating our laws. Deport the illegals and fine the people here in this country breaking our laws. To hell with all this rewarding criminals and people to break our laws. This is beyond ridiculous.

The logistics of deporting between 11,000,000 and 35,000,000 people stagger the imagination.

And, of course, you would be deporting people like

Rhodes scholar and 'Dreamer' fears he can't return to US if he leaves to study at Oxford University due to strict new DACA rules imposed by Trump

as well as the ones that you don't want - wouldn't you?

On the other hand, how do we know that he isn't a diseased, drug smuggling, gang member (or might not become one) - right?

Even if the wall was the perfect solution, which it isn't, the above discussion is off topic to the thread, which is whether Trump said that Mexico would pay for the wall, that he now denies he said. It's laughable that he wants us to now believe he didn't say Mexico would pay for the wall when we heard him say it.

No the democrats need to step up and do their job securing our border instead of kicking the can down the road for another 100 years.

Fair enough...Open the Government....and start the talks...I'm guessing Democrats will increase their offer....offer up specifics...This is the people's money...trump's negotiation tactic (after losing the Mid Terms)...Give me 5.7 Billion or else...That isn't going to work...He is not an emperor.....

Just Do It.

And since it's easy enough for your eight year old to comprehend, what would the fees need to be to pay for all this, per traveler? Trump said we issue about a million border crossing cards per year that now cost $160 per person. If we raised it to $1,160 per person, and still issued a million of them (which we wouldn't, because fewer people could afford it) we'd raise $1.2 billion. That's a little over 25% of the cost per year of border control ($3.8B in 2016), NOT counting new construction for the wall.

So where's the other 75% of the annual operating budget going to come from, since it's so easy to understand? And then you'll need to figure out where the $6 billion to $25 billion for the Great Wall will come from, plus the additional annual maintenance on these new miles of 'wall.'

Not at all.....So should the business be fined?......Strange how so many lawless criminals get hired isn't it...Illegally entering the United States is wrong...Using rascit insults to these people is just as wrong

So you agree with Trump and I that we need to do something about the problem now instead of kicking the can down the road. Wonderful.

This is the beauty of waiting until the House Republicans got their ass handed to them in November. The GOP can talk all they want about solutions they couldn't bother doing, couldn't get done, but will now try to hang on the necks of the opposition. It's like spending - when in power the GOP spend like drunken sailors, cut taxes, run up the deficit, then lose power and whine about Democrat Big Spending!

There are 10 million people in this country right now. So if they are the hard working people you claim they are they can pay taxes. $1,000 each comes out to 10 billion dollars that doesn't include the revenue from the people entering this country each year. Around 100 million people cross into and out of the US every year. A 10 dollar fee would generate another billion each year. Plus what we are already paying we could have the most up to date secure border in the world. We could become a real world leader instead of the pathetic joke our security is today.

No he is part of the checks and balances. Right now he says no to kicking the can down the road. Time for congress to do their job.

The wall either forces Mexico to pay for the wall or keep their people out of our country. If you want to work and play in this country it is time to pay your share.

WaPo with video and audio:

“The fact is, we are both in a little bit of a political bind because I have to have Mexico pay for the wall,” Trump told Peña Nieto. “I have to. I have been talking about it for a two-year period. . . . If you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that.”

Not to mention when the US charges entry fees, generally other countries retaliate and charge equal fees to enter.

See Bolivia for an example.

Calmite. The country will survive.

Great - good luck collecting $1,000 for each man, woman and child here and without proper documentations, because of course they're part of the above ground economy being illegal, and wouldn't be using fake ID or getting paid cash or off the books or anything, and if a worker has a wife and three kids and that means he owes $5,000 a year off a fruit picking salary, shouldn't be a problem collecting as he goes from farm to farm.

So, again, Just Do It.

I do...and so do most Democrats....Demanding 5.7 Billion for a wall to full fill a campaign promise isn't a solution...Open the government start the talks...Lay out a specific plan....Start solving the problem
