Trump orders FEMA to halt payments to California as wildfire recovery continues

And rake all the forests.

Trump says we need to rake the forest floors
Trump spoke with the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö and Trump claims Niinistö told him about crews that were raking the leaves.

Once California gets their rakers lined up, I'm sure Trump will be happy to reinstate funding. Jesus, Dumb as Donald. SMH.
Maybe the same people that Nancy wants to cut the grass on the Border could rake the forest after they finish with the Border.

Oh hush with your true facts you are destroying their bash Trump party.

Several of the facts in those op-eds actually make what Trump said today rather ludicrous. Like, they mention how controlled burning has significantly increased in CA. There was mis-mangament, but that was before 2018. Why punish them now, won't that hurt CA Citizens? In which way is it currently being mis-managed to stop FEMA aid?

I'd refer to these fact checks instead,

Just the first eight feet of road frontage. I believe they are supposed to keep cut the first four, but fail to do so.

Where did Trump say that?

He said the president of Finland had told him about crews raking leaves....which of course the president of Finland denied.

Because let's face it, Trump is far too lazy to spend even five minutes learning anything important.

You're in the wrong thread.

The "Pelosi is living rent free in SLC's head" thread is somewhere else.

Jan. 9 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cut off relief money for California as the state recovers from the deadliest wildfires in its history.

"Billions of dollars are sent to the State of California for Forest fires that, with proper Forest Management, would never happen," Trump tweeted Wednesday. "Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money. It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money."

New York? Get a rope!

No, actually, "greenies" figured out a long time ago that you need controlled burns and other active methods to keep forests healthy. Total suppression of fires dates back to the 1940s, when "greenies" weren't really around, and forest management was not well understood by anyone. After a few decades of total suppression, scientists realized in the 1960s that fire was an essential part of forest health.

The problem now is less about knowledge, and more about actually spending the money to protect forests.

"Greenies" also usually object to building communities in areas that are prone to fire. E.g. they are currently opposed to a "Centennial," a massive development near Los Angeles on a former ranch that, among other issues, is vulnerable to wildfires.

We should also note that something like clear-cutting forests (which environmentalists generally oppose, and people like Zinke suggest) does not actually save forests. That's like saying "you can cure lung cancer by killing the patient."

Annnnnd.... About half of the forests in California are under federal management. Since you missed it, we've had quite a few Republican administrations over the past ~50 years. Even with Democratic administrations, environmentalists don't often get their way.

Finally, unlike the Zinkes of the world, "greenies" realize that global warming is now a major threat to forests. Higher temperatures result in drier forests, which means that fires are more likely to spread faster, and be more intense. Just to be clear, AGW is not an example of "nature taking its course."

California hasn't been using controlled burns.

California also outlawed the removal of underbrush that serves as tender for the wildfires.

Tree huggers carry most of the blame for California's wildfires.

Yeah that would have worked for hurricane Sandy

And Katrina.. The Southern states hit by Katrina went to the Feds for money for YEARS, and YEARS. You know, those fiscal conservatives Republicans who hate the Fed government kept going to the Feds for more and more money. This went one for almost 10 years.

The three "sources" you listed are highly questionable.

No it was the Louisiana Democrats and their graft some are now in prison for what they did.

Fire on the Mountain: Rethinking Forest Management in the Sierra Nevada

Did you bother to read the quote you posted? I ask because you appear to be blaming those rabid Democrats in California when the last sentence of your quote says: "Complicating the management problem is the fact that the State of California owns very few of the forests within its borders most are owned by the federal government or private landowners."

Elections have consequences.

Electing a megalomaniac imbecile apparently has even greater consequences. This was wholly predictable.

https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/trump-2018-budget-cuts-fighting-wildfires-deadly-article-1.3318296

"President Trump's proposed budget cuts to fighting wildfires could be deadly for the Western U.S."

California is burning — and President Trump is cutting the firehoses.

As smokeaters in the Golden State are battling 14 major wildfires, Congress is debating a White House proposal to cut $300 million from the U.S. Forest Service's wildfire fighting initiatives and $50 million from its wildfire prevention efforts — all on top of a 23% reduction of federal funding for volunteer fire departments around the nation.

Since the beginning of this year, fires have consumed 68,129 acres in California — more than twice as many acres as the same period last year, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

trump just runs his mouth to get his base of white trash morons excited...He has NO authority to with hold the funds...Still trump can Go **** himself

Act of war against California.
Time to stop ALL California payments to the Federal Government.

Could be making a bargaining chip.

Since when is it O.K. for a president to bargain with the American people's lives to get what HE wants?

Oh wait that started two years ago.

Only problem is the man sucks at making deals. He's a legend in the business world in his own mind.

And now he has decided to try and pick a fight with the new Governor of California, and make no mistake, he's doing this to (A) test Newsom, and (B) "punish" Californians for not voting for him and (C) as a symbolic "F-U" to give his base a hard on.
Well, it will be fun to watch all those hard-ons wilt the moment they stick their hands out for their milk money and tornado funds.

F-U right back, Donald.

Next one of those that hits down there, California shouldn't send one thin dime, and neither should New York, because make no mistake about it, he's going to go to war with New York, too.
I see the pattern. He's going to flail around, have tantrums and declare war on every blue state and blame them for the shutdown, too.

This STOPS NOW.

Got to say you have partial facts correct which is typical of "greenies".

- Fire in the forest depends if it is fire dependent or independent ecosystem.
- Because of politics and "greenies" "other active measures" have not taken place. The result is overstocked forests. Stand density is nowhere near natural density. This makes using Rx fire more difficult. In some areas fuel loads should be reduced before reintroducing fire into the forest.
- As far as clear cutting. Clear cutting produces an even aged stand. It is a viable forest management practice for some species and under certain conditions.
Forest Issues | Clearcutting : Oregon Association of Loggers

- I agree with you that local and State governments should control the development of housing in fire prone areas.

- The big issue we face is how to reduce the fuel load to avoid catastrophic wildfires. Global warming not only increases the fire risk, but as sites get dryer the vegetation will change over time. An example is in Arizona there are places where Ponderosa Pine was the dominant tree at 5,000' elevation. The area is now being encroached by Pinyon and Juniper. Why, the site is no longer as wet as it use to be hundreds of years ago. It is now more suitable for PJ growth.

(Interesting question a logger once asked a Sierra Club member, Where did the spotted owl live before there was old growth trees?)
