Trump: Mattis out as Defense Secretary Jan. 1

Mattis has been the opposite of respectful, he has been insubordinate.

Nope....he left instead of being insubordinate. Otherwise, please feel free to post examples where he refused Trump's orders.

I know the distinction is subtle (not really) but I'm happy to try and help you understand it.

OTOH, you cannot force respect from someone and it's obvious that Mattis does not respect Trump. However as a professional, he still chose to behave and resign in a respectful manner.

LMAO, I cant wait till all the books come out. I ignored Omarosa's but there's plenty more to come down the pike.

Not only that, they'll all corroborate each other...Tillerson, Mattis, Kelly...in the details.

Hopefully they'll all come out in late 2019, early 2020

Exactly.

Mattis has been the opposite of respectful, he has been insubordinate.

No, he has been critical of a President who is eroding U.S. national defense strategy. Mattis has about 40 years of military and defense experience on Cadet Bone Spurs. He sees what is happening and cannot, in good conscience, be a part of it. He has tried, to no avail, to lend the President the benefit of his experience in his role as SecDef. And Trump, who is desperate for a win, just **** all over him (and pretty much the rest of the DoD) for political expediency.

That's not being insubordinate or disrespectful. That's him doing his job. And now, he's leaving with his character, reputation, and dignity intact.

How so? It's interesting you say that because his role is one of informing the POTUS of things he may not want to hear so he can make informed decisions and not serve as a minion. It would have been disrespectful if he took to Twitter and started a passive aggressive campaign against fellow administration members. I think he did the right thing if he felt the situation is untenable, and the letter was very professional. I'm not sure what else you can expect of someone who feels they are no longer able to perform their duties effectively.

No, I want a Netflix series! I suspect it would make a great dramedy.

I really want Trump to humiliate his new enemy Mattis on twitter. Mattis was soooooo disrespectful to Trump. Yes, Trump should show everyone how much more be knows about the military.

OMG! You are right! Think of the gajillions more material they already have than the current movie on Cheney!

It will be a riot, altho maybe not if the country is so run into the ground or under seige by terror threats that we cant look back and laugh.

Who (what actors) can we get to play everyone? Oh that would be a fantastic thread...where should I post it?

Seems to many of us that trump finally read or comprehended the letter which is why he now feels the need to get rid of Mattis before his departure date. What a small petty man trump is. Once again, trump does what’s best for his emotions and not what’s best for our country.

Trump's announcing that Mattis will leave at the end of the year is nothing other than Trump trying to retake the rhetorical, and to some extent "optical," initiative. It's quite literally a matter of Trump wanting to be the subject, not the object, of the predicate (and most certainly not the indirect object of it).

So basically he wants to be seen as being in control, rather then having events control him?

I regret to have to admit it, but I'm afraid you're right. We really don't know what's in store for us in the next few months. But I would bet my life that it's going to be filled with anything other than more turmoil and division.

Being an optimist, hope I am wrong

It has been announced that Gen. Mattis will leave Jan 1 rather than February as he had announced.

Good for Trump. Mattis wanted to play prima donna, Trump cut him off at the knees. Shame that Mattis' distinguished career had to end like this, but he brought it on himself.

Why not? Like I said, better transition. Trump seemed to be fine with it a few days ago, now he’s changing his tune. Wonder why.

Someone actually read the letter to him and explained that Mattis all but said he was endangering the country with his decisions as POTUS. Once he understood the letter he probably had another tantrum.

I thought if Trump actually comprehended the letter he would be gone pretty quickly. Took him a bit to catch on.

No idea, but he gets to make the call.
Exactly, you prefer to go along with something you are clueless about because your guy makes the decision, no matter how stupid that may be. Says a lot too...

Hard to believe Trump didn't catch the part of about being "clear eyed" as to whom are our enemies and whom are our friends. Not to mention Mattis didn't close his letter with "respectfully" or "respectfully yours". Which never happens in these kind of letters.

Not my guy, it’s how the system works. Sorry for your ignorance, and you’re welcome for the education. No charge.

Yup, it is how the system works. To make it work for Trump, we need to do the following:

1) Open up a pack of playing cards.

2) Write the name of someone on each card. These could be hacks like President Ann Coulter, members of FOX and Friends, Famous dictators like Un, Putin, etc, America's favorite conspiracy nuts, and just for good measure, and to spice things up a little, throw in the name of Ronald McDonald.

3) This is getting fun. Let's make it 5 packs of playing cards.

4) As soon as Trump fires someone, or someone resigns, it's time for another episode of Trump's new reality show, Donnie's Romper Room Replacement Selection.

5) Shuffle the decks.

6) Trump picks a card.

7) That's the replacement for whoever Trump fired, or resigned.

8) I betcha dollars to donuts that the rate of people leaving the White House will decrease......

9) Or maybe not.

10) But it will keep Donnie entertained, and his finger off the nuclear button. And for the American people? Great comedy.

I heard that James Mattis wanted to stay until February for a specific reason, that reason being the upcoming NATO summit in February. I think he wanted to stick around long enough to be able to reassure our NATO partners that the U.S. wouldn't abandon them, which I believe is too late for anyway.

Oh dear god, Steven Miller is the most evil member of the WH staff. He scares the living crap outta me. :(

I'd like to kick that asshole Miller in the face

All too often those who cant win the battle of ideas end up at physical violence directed towards their betters.

Do keep that in mind please.
