Michael Cohen sentencing: Trump's former lawyer jailed for three years over Stormy Daniels hush mone

If you hire a lawyer and tell him to bribe the judge, and he does, you’ve both committed a crime.

That is kind of like hiring a hit man.

Mrs Pence might as well start getting the cardboard boxes.

Echoing the language prosecutors used when referring to Trump in court filings, Pauley noted that Cohen admitted that he made the illicit hush-money payments “at the coordination with and the direction of Individual-1.”

I suppose you think Cohen's tax evasion charge was overlooked by the sentencing judge. Cohen admitting that he made the hush money payment is just one of his “veritable smorgasbord of fraudulent conduct.”

Only thing is ... telling a lawyer to pay off frivolous-claim people is not a crime.
If said lawyer screws up on how to pay off frivolous-claim people, it's on lawyer - he should have known better.

Of the 9 counts he was sentenced on, I've only seen mentioned that lying to congress was worth 2 months.

Since these are concurrent sentences, which of the other 8 counts was worth the 36 months?

Apparently that's the bimbo payments. Based on half a dozen articles I've read he got nothing for $4M in tax fraud, nothing for false statements to the bank and 3 years for bimbo payments plus 2 months for lying to congress. I swear, if this isn't the perfect definition of a political prosecution I've never seen one. Solzhenitsyn couldn't have made something like this up.

So he got nothing for the tax fraud and 3 years for the bimbo payments? That's VERY messed up.

I agree. This might be an indication that he cooperated more than he is claiming he did.

This begs the question, if Cohen is being sentenced for a crime that was directed by Trump, what sentence should be imposed on Trump?

For those who say "Cohen is a liar" let us not forget that Cohen taped all of his conversations with Trump. For all of Cohen's faults, he did, indeed, have the wisdom to tape Trump, which suggests that Cohen foresaw this day and believed he was conspiring with Trump in criminal activity.

Not until he is out of office, although impeachment proceedings are feasible, and perhaps even likely

Yes, crimes committed by politicians and their surrogates are political in nature.......

Actually, it IS a crime if it is part of a cover up of a crime.

I can only conclude you do not understand campaign finance laws.

And the answer is no. He's being sentenced for crimes that had nothing to do with Trump.

We'd have to see a break down of everything he was charged with and the sentence for each item before the above is determined.
He was hit with a bevy of fines as well.

The first substantial prison sentence of someone close to Trump, and it certainly won't be the last.

Democrats are evil. They did everything they could to keep people like Ted Kennedy, Bill and Hillary Clinton, So Sharpton and many others from ever having to answer for their crimes, and gloat with glee over the misfortunes of non-democrats being persecuted by the rabid hound dogs of the democrat party.

If your attorney commits a crime on your behalf, the attorney alone is guilty. The client didn't act, the attorney did.

For example, if I hire a lawyer and that lawyer bribes a judge with money, in no way should the client be charged with a crime.

But if you direct your lawyer to bribe the judge, Mr. Capone...

And the answer is no. He's being sentenced for crimes that had nothing to do with Trump.

So sez you. In the sentencing documents, Cohen admits to paying off Daniels at the direction of "individual-1", which happens to be Trump. Saying over and over that it didn't happen will never change the fact that it did.

And which one would that be?

The charges Cohen pleaded guilty to:

Charges brought by the Southern District:

Count 1-5: Evasion of assessment of income tax liability for pleading guilty to failing to report more than $4 million in income from 2012 through 2016.

Counts 6: False statements to a bank for Cohen pleading guilty to understating debt from his taxi medallion business in the process of applying for a home equity line of credit (HELOC) with a bank.

Count 7: Causing an unlawful corporation contribution for when he pleaded guilty to orchestrating a payment made by American Media to Karen McDougal for her “limited life story”, an allegation that she had an affair with Donald Trump.

Count 8: Excessive campaign contribution for when he pleaded guilty to making an excessive political contribution when he paid adult film actress Stephanie Clifford aka Stormy Daniels $130,000 for her story and silence about Clifford’s alleged affair with Donald Trump.

Charge brought by Robert Mueller

Count 1: False statements to Congress for when Cohen pleaded guilty to making false statements to Congress on August 28, 2017 when he sent a two-page letter to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) and the House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) as well as during testimony before Congress.

It looks like his sentence weighed heavily for counts 1-5; tax evasion.
Thanks for a list of his charges.

Trump does attract a lot of Felons.

He does this so he can drain the swamp. Collaborate with shady characters and flush them out.

What crime was covered up?

LOLOLOLOL. I freakin love it.

What crime was covered up, as Cohen is being led to jail? Sorry, I can't help but laugh at the weakest sauce ever presented at DP. LMAO.

I agree. This might be an indication that he cooperated more than he is claiming he did.

If it's an indication of anything it's that the court is trying to set a precedent for hanging the same felony on Trump. It's so they can go into impeachment proceedings with the precedent of giving 3 years to Cohen who wasn't even the "mastermind" of the criminal conspiracy.

This is, frankly, rather frightening. There is no way that justice should be so politically biased as to allow something like this to occur. If they gave Cohen 3 years for the tax fraud I'd figure it was a light sentence but nothing for taxes and 3 years for "campaign finance violations" which never even went to trial because of his plea is PURE political theater.
