Border agents routinely used tear gas during Obama administration

Using tear gas and pepper spray without a policy or goal in place to reduce the need for the stuff only perpetuates the need to use it. This is where the difference between Obama and Trump lies. Obama had no such policy or goal. Trump does.

I put my money on Trump NOT breaking any of Obama's tear gas/pepper spray records.

Of course not. Trump will use bullets against rocks, and probably even against harsh words.

According to the OP, Trump's highest single year usage has already exceeded Obama's highest single year usage.

So you already lost your money.

yawn...

Another person who is incapable of comprehension.

Dismissed.

Nope. It was for the total over a 5 year span. Trump is well on his way but he isn't there yet and there is also the not-so-small matter of him needing to win reelection in order to get that fifth year of eligibility. This is certainly no gimme, either. To be safe, he's really going to need to sew this thing up in 4 years. No small task to be sure...

Yes you did.

So...your lack of comprehension made you think I was talking about a policy to reduce the use of the stuff...when I expressly talked about reducing the "need" to use the stuff.

sigh...why do I even bother...

Dismissed.

Just as I thought. Typical Mycroft.

The person I replied to said "any of Obama's tear gas/pepper spray records". Trump has already beaten Obama's single year record.

It's nice of you to try to help the poster out, but he still lost his money.

I believe in a liberal use of teargas and tasers. Either could be employed against, say, a stupid question. The more people teargassed and tasered, the better. You can't find someone I don't think should receive both.

I have a feeling a lot less people will be trying to enter illegally thanks to all the coverage the media is giving this conflict

I'm the OP. I set the parameters. "Any of Obama's tear gas/pepper spray records" was in reference to the OP.

But wait! There's more...

It would appear that President Trump is on pace to shatter Obama's record of 79 tear gassings over a 5 year span but he has his work cut out for him if he wants to beat the pepper spray record. Obama averaged 88.2 pepper sprayings per year and right now Trump is only averaging 49.5.

It's still early but if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Trump to shatter the tear gas record but Obama'a pepper spray record appears to be safe.

....let's see what the actual numbers tell us....

Tear gas use, 2012-2018

2012 26

2013 27

2014 15

2015 8

2016 3

2017 18

2018 29

Interesting. Trump seems to really like tear gassing. He used tear gas 29 times in 2018 (and the year ain't done yet), more than ANYTIME during the Obama years. Moreover, Obama drove illegal border crossings to a record low in 2016. That is likely reflected in the number of uses of tear gas. There seems to have been little need for tear gassing as of 1/20/17.

Much like inheriting a good economy, Trump inherited illegal border crossings at a 25 year low. So, why Mr. Trump are gassings up 6X in your first year of the Presidency? Perhaps its the same reason that you have no problem yanking children from the arms of the moms and dads.

Aside from displaying your innate cruelty and overt bigotry, perhaps to put on a show for your too bigoted base, there seems to be no explanation.

Yet another cosmic "What about Obama?" fail

PS - You are a despicable human being, Mr. Trump.

It doesn't matter how many tear gassings or pepper sprays. What matters is why it was done. Does the term self defense mean anything here, you know defense against thrown rocks and bottles?

Oh brother.

Mycroft already lost his money. The article to which you linked provided the data we needed. No amount of deflection from you saves his bet. Just because you are the OP doesn't let you change the date in the article you chose to link to. If you want different data, you should have found a different article.

What's that saying? "Two wrongs don't make a right."

It's the essentials of whataboutism in a saying.

It doesn't matter one tiny bit whether Obama did it, or anyone else.

What matters if it's wrong.

IMO it's wrong, so the border guards doing such a thing cannot be accepted.

The point of bringing up Obama did it is to show the bias and hypocrisy of those in the media with the faux outrage about Trump using tear gas. They only care because Trump is in office.

I am curious about why you view this as wrong. Would you prefer they be shot? I would think non lethal methods such as teargas is much better than the alternatives.

I'd prefer the border hadn't been shut, and that we'd let them enter and process their asylum requests.

Then we wouldn't "need" teargas.

Don't kid yourself. What matters is political capital and scoring cheap points. We're long past the point where we stand for values and principles.

The whole thing has become a mockery so why not mock it? Do you think Trump can break the record?

Maybe if they actually went through the process rather than trying to enter illegally while assaulting border patrol agents we wouldn't "need" teargas. You are effectively blaming the victim here, the BP agents are trying to do their job and these people are throwing rocks at them. The BP agents have a right to self defense.
